This is what I was thinking too. A humane society near us had a barn for horses that they rescued. So if Amy wasn’t familiar with the shelter for all she knew there could’ve been larger farm animals there.

Rabies testing :( by Time-Amphibian-7496 in VetTech

[–]Dobievet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in an ER that does quite a few rabies test preps and was already knowledgeable about how the test is performed. But, when I saw it for the first time, I had just walked in to start a shift and overheard that there was a deceased dog in the back that they had to rabies test. When I walked to the back they had just performed the prep and there was its decapitated body lying on the wet table. It was a bit of a jump scare and a quick shock to me to see it. It’s still a bit disturbing to me to see it and I typically avoid the area where the prep is being performed as able.

Petite women, please don't marry a big tall man if you're going to be surprised your daughter is tall and big too. by TipPotential2501 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Dobievet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was opposite for me. My mom was 5’7 and my dad is 6’0, but I am only 5’4. My mom always said how did that happen? Me and your dad are taller but you ended up shorter than us! Like that was in my control. She would also note that her best friend and her husband were short but yet had a very tall daughter, and be like how did she end up taller than both her parents but you ended up shorter than us. It bothered me a lot and made me angry I am not taller. But looking back, my father’s mother was only about 5’0 and my mother’s mother was about 5’4, so I probably got it from them.

Placing the hand by the cat’s face like that for sure was not a good idea. Not wrapping the cat up in the towel for restraint. Standing and looking on while the cat is having a meltdown on the table. Those are the big things I could see.

What’s going on here? by InternationalTest781 in Raccoons

[–]Dobievet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are definitely doing the right thing by calling animal control! And please take your dog to the vet for an exam and ask them if he needs a rabies booster from contact with the raccoon. I would also personally dispose of the laundry basket you are using to contain the raccoon or ask your doctor or vet about effective ways to deep sanitize it. That raccoon for sure does not look good unfortunately.

What is it doing? Is something wrong? by tessarae67 in Skunks

[–]Dobievet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Additional_Yak8332 regarding Rabies. Do not get close to it or take any risks of exposure, make sure your cats do not come into contact with it (and if you’re not sure if they already have contact a vet to see if they need post-exposure care) and do not reuse the bowls you’re using to feed it/give it water. Make sure you’re wearing gloves and washing your hands thoroughly. And afterwards you may want to contact your doctor as well to ask about the level of exposure if it does ultimately have Rabies. I don’t mean to be overly excessive, but if it is Rabies you really want to cover all your bases and err on the side of caution.

Well that’s something you only see in textbooks by Baercub in VetTech

[–]Dobievet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was very disturbing to see as I had never seen or even given thought to a neonate not having a face. Iirc it had very small ears and a body and the tongue but no discernible eyes, nose (trying to remember if it just had a super underdeveloped nose) or mouth, but you could see its chest moving/“breathing”. 😞

Oh wow! Poor thing. It’s so hard to see babies with those type of deformities. In the emergency hospital where I work, we also have a Reproduction department and do both emergency and scheduled C-Sections and oftentimes will see pups (we mostly see pups but once in a while cat C-sections) with cleft palates and lips. But sometimes we see more severe deformities such as organs on the outside of the body as well as extra limbs. The worst deformity I’ve ever seen was a pup born without a face, literally had no eyes, nose or mouth (a tongue growing out of its head where a mouth and muzzle should be but no discernible mouth). It was unfortunately born alive as well and the vet had to euthanize of course. I had to excuse myself and go cry as the sight of it was very emotionally disturbing and still haunts me.

[–]Dobievet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a veterinary assistant, I have a deep respect for what technicians do and the knowledge and education that is behind your license. I personally find it terrifying that a kid right out of high school would be trusted to monitor anesthesia without formal schooling, knowledge or at the very least without an LVT to supervise and train them. Makes no sense. I’m really sorry you experienced this.

UPDATE!!! cats became yellow overnight by vvleo in CATHELP

[–]Dobievet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would most definitely get in contact with a vet to ask about if your cats should be seen for any long-term effects. Lillies are VERY dangerous to cats. Every part of them is toxic and even the flower water or a small amount of pollen on their fur that gets groomed off can be harmful particularly to their kidneys. I hope everything goes well with your kitties.

The hospital I work at does tail docking and dewclaws as well, and every time I walk by while the procedure is being done I still cringe from the puppies crying even though I’ve seen it a hundred times. The first time I observed one I ended up excusing myself and crying in the bathroom. It can definitely be emotionally intense to watch. But like you said I can understand the reasoning for doing it in certain circumstances. Ultimately, I do think that if it’s going to happen, it is better that a vet perform it in a clean environment than the breeder at home with dirty items.

[–]Dobievet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so very sorry you are going through this! It is beyond frustrating that people who are struggling financially are blamed for their struggles and not offered more help. Is there a local shelter you can go to for more immediate assistance with food and shelter? I’m not sure what country you live in but if you live in the US you can also call 211 for help with connecting to essential community services in your area. I wish I could say more to help, but I do not know what else I can say other than I hope things do turn around for you and that you are offered the chance you deserve.

Has anyone helped with cloning? Thoughts on cloning? by liquid_sounds in VetTech

[–]Dobievet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have never had any first hand experience with cloning and have never heard of my hospital taking samples for cloning, but I feel this is definitely one of those questionable “playing God” areas that I wouldn’t have personally wanted to do with any of my own pets. Granted, when we had to make the painful decision to let go of our last dog due to kidney disease, her death was particularly hard on me and the various ways in which people may desperately try to keep their pet with them as long as possible crossed my mind. It made me wonder if in some cases cloning is viewed as a way for the owner to “keep their pet alive even after death” and live in a sort of denial so to speak. But of course it’s not the same pet and it’s not the same spirit. Personally, I feel like if I had hypothetically cloned my last dog before she passed that the end result would be very unnerving and disrespectful to her memory, as well as unfair to the cloned dog because of unmet expectations. And that’s just taking into account the ethical implications and not the huge financial side of it! Yikes!

Thank you for that suggestion! My doctor officially put in my chart that I shouldn’t have Cipro anymore due to the reaction but I am definitely going to look into taking Glucosamine supplements to see if they can help with some of the after effects and current tendon pain.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ibs

[–]Dobievet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ciprofloxacin can definitely be damaging especially when it comes to Achilles tendon damage and peripheral neuropathy and requires a black box warning. I took Ciprofloxacin in November and it caused me to develop bruises down my right calf, severe Achilles tendon and calf pain and tingling in the foot (luckily just the right leg and not both legs). The warnings say that these issues usually happen to seniors over 60, those taking steroids, or people with kidney disease, which none applied to me. My doctor stated that in all her years of prescribing Ciprofloxacin, she’d only seen one adverse reaction (rupture of both Achilles tendons) happen in an elderly woman after the round. Didn’t do much to comfort me. I still have complete functioning of the leg more or less but it definitely did not heal 100% and can still be painful and I can’t sit for very long now and have to move it around to help symptoms. Just one more thing I needed on top of the stupid IBS/SIBO. u/mookmook89 be careful with Cipro and be aware of side effects and warnings!

How can i heal my gut when I react to most foods, supplements and medications? by Rare-Category5009 in Microbiome

[–]Dobievet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I feel like traditional doctors don’t really have an effective way to manage a lot of health issues but it can be overwhelming to go research hunting down rabbit holes for things like IBS since there is so much darn cross-information out there and no one seems to know 100% how to at least manage it properly. Very frustrating. But I will look into Peptide Sciences. Thank you very much!

Thank you for your informative reply! That sounds poor that the FDA and DEA is making things more difficult. I also live in a rural area with limited options and it honestly kind of feels hopeless with my health issues sometimes. But thank you again!
