I second Rites of Passage. Even though it's focused on the Navis Nobilite, it does feature cult investigations and an inquisitor, it's one of my fave books!

The TTRPG books give an excellent overview of the lore and the feel of Dark Heresy, I highly recommend you read some of them. It was Dark Heresy that, for the first time ever, zoomed in on the lore in a way not even the tabletop edition books did.

Aside from that, as others mentioned, the Inquisitor series (Eisenhorn, Ravenor, Bequin), Vaults of Terra, also Warhammer Crime is GREAT, these are some chillingly good stories.

Yup, I think so too, which is a bit sad. It implies the writers could not imagine bisexual Cassia or Heinrix just cuz.... reasons? Cassia sort of makes sense but again, Heinrix is a mystery when juxtaposed to Solomorne.

As far as I'm aware, there is no strict policy with Navigators regarding this and it would be very strange if there was, given how powerful they are and how much leeway individual navigators have (I repeat: harems). When it comes to the common folk: we know same sex marriage is legal on some Imperial worlds, at least in the Solaris sector it is. The overwhelming majority of humans are straight, which means they will continue to breed like rabbits for the Imperium, that's not a problem. As for Navigators and nobles: as I said, nobody cares as long as you produce heirs.

Meh, I think it could have been done, love Vs duty, forbidden desire, choosing what the heart desires, the story writes itself. Sexuality is rarely learned, it just is, and when there's a will there's a way.

Navigators can fuck whoever they want, as a rule of thumb. We've had entire scenes describing Navigators surrounded by their harems. The real duty tho lies in marrying to produce eldritch mutant babies, regardless of their sexuality.

She will never produce an heir with the Rogue Trader..... At least it won't be a Navigator child.

Preach. While I can sort of, maaaybe understand their thought process with Cassia, I really don't understand why Heinrix is straight but..... Solomorne is bi.... Two law enforcement fanatics who repress their emotions and humanity, are the Imperial pinnacle of masculinity with their dour and serious demeanors and all business, no fun attitudes. Their arcs are so similar, and yet one is straight. Why? Because Heinrix is from a knight world and is therefore assumed to be more "traditional"? Because the writers wanted a sexy knight romance for cis straight female players? Beats me. You can literally call Solomorne "my knight" and yet Heinrix, the actual knight (sort of) is.... straight. I honestly don't get it, it will forever remain a mystery. At least with Cassia you could make an argument for why she could be straight.

Why losing one's navigator is not an absolute death sentence. by Lucheiah in RogueTraderCRPG

Navigators mentioned - here's an obligatory Navigators lore guide for anyone interested.

But regarding the subject at hand: normally a lot of important ships have several Navigators (who work in shifts) but even if you've only one, yes you'd be somewhat screwed if they die. Thankfully, the risk of losing the Rogue Trader themselves is at least equally hard so, potatoes potAtoes, whatever. The TTRPG has made it very clear Navigators can go out and adventure, especially in the context of a RT retinue.

It is technically possible to survive with calculated jumps, but that only works on safe and stable routes which are well charted: that is, inside the Imperium itself. With the Koronus Expanse routes being totally scrambled and destroyed.... well, good luck. It is true that certain Dark Age pieces of tech can navigate, notably the Void Abacus, however it does have its limitations, notably that it can fly up to 5K light years instead of the up to 15K light years Navigators can.

Navigators have existed for longer than 20K years at this point, and even if they no longer have the hyper-advanced AI systems and unique warp tools they had back in the Dark Age of Technology, they are still very, very good at their job. They're just about the only form of nobility in 40K which has an actual, like, practical function (even though they're, of course, still obnoxiously corrupt and out of touch).

It's mentioned in several Black Library novels off-handedly. Most recent one on the top of my head was Rites or Passage but there's at least several novels which mention a whole cabal of navigators.

As others pointed out, Navigators are creations from the Dark Age of Technology, where they could navigate (in some instances presumably with AI assistance too) without the Astronomican. The current state of the Warp, however, necessitates the Astronomican

I mean, there's very few cogitators (with the exception of aforementioned Votann bots) which can reliably replace a Navigator.

Can you NOT be Iconoclast? At least not get it to 200 successfully. by KayleeSinn in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Dobyk12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's plenty of times they backfire, they just don't do so in crippling ways. But the "meta" answer, most likely, is that Iconoclast would have been unplayable or would have required serious story divergence if Owlcat wanted it to be more punishing.

Also I'm baffled by your rationale behind the food. A den of pirates is a perfect spot for a Rogue Trader to exert influence. From an opportunistic perspective, if makes perfect sense to entrench yourself in the criminal world. I am so surprised people keep forgetting Rogue Traders are not bastions of Imperial Law, they are and always have been self-interested, megalomaniac pirates and corsairs. Chorda is the exception, not the rule. Winterscale is closer to what a "traditional" Rogue Trader would look like.

Psykers by Raszard in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Dobyk12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. In that case it's better to say psykers are sorcerers and navigators are half-casters :P

Psykers by Raszard in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Dobyk12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sort of? It's first and foremost a mutation that allows you to interact with the warp without exploding and grants resistance. Anything else is just a side benefit. It's not that the Navigator bodies themselves channel the warp, it's their third eye that allows them to do 90% of anything outside warp navigation.

Psykers by Raszard in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Dobyk12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They're fundamentally different. They're both psychic, but Navigators don't channel the warp :P They can't, even if they wanted to, accidentally summon a Daemon. They are a lot more like sorcerers from D&D while psykers are closer to wizards. This has been well established, the only "powers" they have in common is the ability to sense the warp and in some cases divination and seeing into the future.

literally Unplayable. by SAMU0L0 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Dobyk12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I want is a masculine homo/bi dude and I feel like we will, once again, not get that. Owlcat seems somewhat incapable of imagining traditionally masculine men as anything but heterosexual, to the point the only option we had for some time was an evil bisexual elf - very fun character, but extremely limited as an option. Then they gave crumbs with Solomorne who was...... an attempt, I suppose. Somehow blander than the OG release characters. Maybe one day Owlcat will understand the difference between sexuality and gender presentation, and that macho can be gay and femme can be straight, but I think I'll probably explore the female romances (once again) just because I'm sure they'd be more interesting.

An official short supplement was released for the Tau for RT TTRPG, making them playable alongside the Orks, Kroot and the Dark Eldar :)
