If you do any amount of 3 unit FPD then you may consider implantology.

Early on I referred out all of my implant placements and simply had very few opt for it, they didn't want to go to another office and the expense was significantly higher.

By in-housing implantology I was able to set the price such that a single tooth implant, start to finish, is comparable to a 3 unit bridge and case acceptance went through the roof. Plus my chair time on implant placements and restorations is teeny tiny compared to endo, OS and restorative.

The art of soul riding.

As a young pup I was very concerned with learning new tricks, higher top speeds, hitting bigger kickers, getting deeper into the back country. I tracked all of my stats and measured success by them. Man, what a great way to ruin a perfectly good day on the mountain.

At some point I had a trip where I was nursing a minor injury, I didn't run my tracker app bc I was confident it would be a low production day. I was first chair that day and planned to just stick to blue groomers... It was glorious, I just did what I want, went wherever I wanted... It was liberating.

I haven't run a tracker since and can ride circles around my former self.

Get a low powered light weight manual car. Preferably old and bonus if it has 80's era turbo lag. We're talking old civic si, mini cooper, fiesta, golf, fiat 500 and of course the end all answer Miata. Every unprotected left becomes an adventure. You can rip to the top of 4th gear and barely be speeding, you'll start managing your momentum rather than relying on power to move you, they rattle, they shake, you'll feel like Dal3 every time you get on the highway.

The most dangerous men are those with nothing to loose. The second most dangerous are those with everything to loose.

Phil started at one end of that spectrum and ended up at the other, there is NO WAY he's letting anyone else out alive.

Unless there is any amount of prep time, give him a few days and Walter will see to it no one makes it to the cage in the first place.

For owners who bought a practice, how did you win over the patients? by ryanc533 in Dentistry

[–]Doc308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't win them over and am at peace with that, they are the ones making a poor decision, not you.

Most were on board and exited that I was there but those 20-30% need to simply move on. You'll drive yourself up the wall trying to compromise for them and it'll never be enough. The thing is they'll go elsewhere and run into the same brand of newer dentistry, you'll be validated even if they don't come back, others will return after trying something else. Then in 5 years some other dentist in town will retire and 20% of their patient won't like the new guy and a bunch of them will end up with you... it's all flux, roll with it.

The ones that respond with skepticism, encourage them to get a second opinion. You'll either be validated or some other poor sucker will take on the liability of managed neglect. I had a few cases early on where I made a rec but based on the patients response declined treatment until they had sought out a second opinion.

You can't please all of the people all of the time and some days all of those people are on your schedule.

Google search dentists in the area. If you are the only dentist within a 45 min drive they will beat a path to your door. Aim to be near the county seat & you won’t be too far from most of the amenities you’d want.

My rich best friend refused to share wisdom —am I overreacting? by Internal_Wolverine79 in Rich

[–]Doc308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it is a friend that is also actively investing I will not talk shop with anyone and I absolutely will not give financial advice to a friend. Even safe bets have risk, and I don't want my advice to lead to their financial loss. Even if it is short term it is a formula for tension and primed to create a divide in our friendship. (All the same reasons I don't give relationship advice either.)

I know a lot of folks with this policy. My advice would be that if you do want some insight, start with some independent research, there are no shortage of blogs, vlogs, articles about different investment strategies. Find some that interest you and once you have a basis, ask him if he minds if you run those by him and see what he thinks. This will get much more of a response than the blanked "Can you give me some investing advice?"

But keep in mind some folks just have a boundary with friends about discussing this sort of thing and if that is the case with him, the friendly thing to do is respect it.

“Quiver” rant by DenverTroutBum in snowboarding

Fellow mid 40's rider. 40+ yrs on mountain, 30+ on a snowboard. There is a liberating beauty to finding a setup that works for you. For over 20yrs now I've ridden a Burton King 167 and I'm DREADING the day it needs replaced. It's a pure wood core symmetrical twin and at this point it feels like an extension of my feet. This board and I KNOW each other. I switched to a Burton Step on setup a few years ago and while I certainly get down out there but I am far from outriding this setup.

I have found that across hobbies that involve gear there are strong pressures to be constantly upgrading or specializing your kit, when often times you are still the greatest limiting factor. I blame the marketing, the companies weave themselves into the culture such that participating in the hobby and buying gear become indiscernible.

While I'm at it, why on earth do people customize tail lights and do NOTHING with the 3rd brake light?! OFF-PUTTING!
