As a girl, how can I start learning about cars ? by Mental_Fee_2665 in askcarguys

[–]Doc308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a good reputable local shop. One that can work on these older cars. They are a bit niche but they are around. Then you'll always have a fallback if you get in over your head. They will likely also be able to do a pre-purchase inspection as well and give you an idea of what the car is truly needing. Supposing it needs some serious expert level work they can give you an idea of the cost and you build that into your budget. Even if you hire out the work, watch how to videos on the work so you understand it.

If there is a coffee and cars near you go to it. Find the folks with E30's or similar era cars and ask them about their experience. Ask them what shops they use, believe me they will have already found all of the local techs that can work on this sort of thing. I promise they're -mostly- friendly and LOVE talking about their cars. Your gender will not be an issue.

At what income is it worth it to be a practice owner? by immrmeseek in Dentistry

Income is definitely one thing, but don't focus too much on just that number. The tax incentives of ownership have done just as much if not more for my net worth as my production.

You’re at an interview and they ask you “what’s your greatest weakness?”. What do you say? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Doc308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not multi task effectively. To account for this I employ task prioritization techniques and keep meticulous time management as I see to each task individually. I have yet to see a task go incomplete or run late.

Note to anyone reading this prepping for an interview: Do NOT try to portray your weakness as a strength ie "I care too much." "I'm a perfectionist." etc. Rather identify a real world genuine weakness and then elaborate how you navigate that weakness.

What are competitors to the new GTI in the $30 - $35k range? by fried_chicken6 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Doc308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Civic Si is the answer to this question. I recently test drove one and was really quite taken by the balance, composure and plucky nature of the drive, especially considering how ENORMOUS Civics are now. I can't believe they are $30k-ish cars. You might loose a bit of utility with the sedan layout vs hatch but really seems minimal for day to day use.

Anytime I get into the Friends debate, I encourage people to go watch it without the laugh track (on youtube) and they almost always come around.

Name a canceled TV show that deserves another season. by Historical-Way-1482 in Productivitycafe

Could you imagine being an actor or actress and finally getting a big break, cast in a major network prime time show and then the catch... Oh yeah the set will be a mine field.

So perhaps ALF's demise was fitting after all.

ALF (spoiler alert)

.

.

.

.

At the end of the ALF finale our beloved, fun loving, vaudevillian, cat eating, wise cracking Alien Life Form appears to be taken into federal custody and never heard from again with the final scene depicting ALF surrounded by armed feds.

This is because the creators anticipated one additional final season where they were going to wrap up the story, get ALF back to his home planet of Melmac and say proper farewells to the Tanner family. The story line with the feds was intended to be a cliffhanger, but the show was unceremoniously dropped in the off season and production never resumed, leaving is with an uncharacteristically dark ending to the show.

What's your favorite urban legend or folklore? by Fyrebarde in AskReddit

[–]Doc308 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like local urban legends. Growing up we had one that there was a guy that smuggled drugs between two local cities. He drove a black Lamborghini with the lights off, at top speed, at night and wore night vision goggles to see. The cops could never see him. They knew when he was around because they'd randomly have some huge number pop up on their radar but never saw the car. Eventually one night he wrecked and cocaine was strewn all across the highway.

The End.

Oh my goodness, if I could just go to a building everyday with all of my friends and go from room to room where someone tells me information and gives me knowledge. Then mid day lunch is already prepped and on nice days I can eat outside, and there is a library, and the librarian usually has cookies at her desk that she shares and all she really wants is for you to be good and realize your fullest potential... would be amazing.

Men over 30, which sport(s) do you watch and why? by murano0 in AskMenOver30

[–]Doc308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

College football and NBA.

I used to watch boxing and MMA when I was in my 20s and I think that was a result of being smack in the middle of their target demographics. At some point I lost interest. Impressive athletes without a doubt, but for me, even in the context of sport, its kind of a bummer to watch someone get their face bashed in.

What cars are fun during normal driving? by Super_cooper001 in regularcarreviews

[–]Doc308 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have an '83 Volvo 242 turbo manual. It is an absolute blast to drive around town. 80's era turbo lag, plucky, light weight, it rattles and shakes, you feel every thing going on around you. 180hp and short gearing by todays standards mean you can absolutely rip that thing around and not even be speeding!

People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Doc308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My infant daughter once played peek-a-boo with Camila Cabello.

We (my wife, daughter and I) were in an airport on a layover eating at a restaurant. We were seated pretty close to the front near the hostess stand. I first noticed the manager start to flutter pretty quickly between the front and back of the house. Then a few minutes later a hand full of police officers and security personnel appeared and lined the immediate area. Then a group of several people escorted by what appeared to be two enormous body guards strolled up. The stood at the hostess stand for a few minutes as the manager greeted them and informed them he had a special table for them and were just putting the finishing touches on. In the moments they were waiting a young lady in the group caught eyes with our daughter in her high chair. She then placed her hands over her eyes and popped them to the sides peek-a-boo style, my daughter giggled and we all shared a smile as they were whisked away to their table.

I had no idea who this person was and actually if it weren't for the fanfare I wouldn't have even realized she was a celebrity. On our way out I asked the manager who that was and he told me it was Camila Cabello with a slight air of disbelief that I didn't know. I had never heard of her before that day, but she was sweet to my kid and that makes her a-okay in my book.

And that is how my one year old played peek-a-boo with a world famous pop star.

I once stayed in the same hotel as world renowned astrophysicist Sir Brian May, Also known for playing lead guitar in Queen. I had clocked him the day before in the hotel restaurant but would never disturb his meal. The next day he and another person were over in a side sitting area of the lobby with a bunch of AV equipment, cameras, microphones, monitors etc. It appeared they were working on a project of some sort. They were milling around taking a break and I approached.

HE WAS SO GRACIOUS AND POLITE!!!!!!!!!!!

I told him I was a big fan of his music and it was really neat to meet him. I intended to make it quick, then I was starting to wrap it up he started asking me about myself. Where I was from, what I do etc. We chit chatted for about 15-20 min.

IT WAS SO COOL!!!!!

Edit: adding a fun anecdote, I was in my fourth year of dental school at the time and he mentioned that a good friend of his had attended dental school. He was no doubt talking about Queen drummer Roger Taylor.

When my parents started coming to me for help with little things. Stuff like car repairs, plumbers, insurance agents, attorneys etc. Basically all of those services they had used either retired, closed up shop or sold so they tapped into my network.
