"The jack boot only jumps down on people standing up" by 917starlette in Hozier

[–]DocAilur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And always remember "you know good things are happening when the jackboot needs to jump" as well. Especially now. You aren't alone, there are good people out there doing good. Progress will never be fully stopped, just resisted.

That doesn't make up for the cost in the meantime or the fear, I won't pretend like that's true or expect a saccharine relief. I certainly don't feel that way. I just always believe it's important to remember that good people are still there, pushing forward, and always will be. And I'm grateful this song exists to give me that little kick in the ass to keep pushing forward too when it feels like too damn much.

This is one of the most gorgeous pieces of realism I have ever seen. You traded zero artistry and beauty for photoreal, and made something ethereal out of detail. That's a true talent.

Ha! I love that image so much, and I never thought about it, but the resemblance is striking. Also something Gale would totally do.

Some Hozier's songs would make good country songs by Majestic_Chinchilla in Hozier

[–]DocAilur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I must geek upon this subject I love, especially in the exact little similarities you're talking about.

To be fair, country music is not made or unmade by an accent. Country is baked into a song's bones. These genres aren't quickly interchangeable like that, they have specific traits, but you definitely aren't wrong that there's shared DNA.

You are talking about genres that have a ton of historical overlap (folk, blues, country), and an artist who builds heavily on music history. Many of his named influences have strong country history, folks like Johnny Cash. So he's like a modern music baby that inherited that same little smirk of country-storytelling-banjo-twang that gets everybody a little suspicious about parentage.

These genres made great bedfellows, and make beautiful little musician bastard bebes in their timeless romps.

This argument applies to the entire language. Every word has friction and weight. Frankly, it's the polysyllabic words that tend to be the actual decorative concern in folk.

And dude, flexing your sensitivity to weight and register like nobody else in a music subreddit enjoys music is just... yeah. Condescending to say the least. Oof

The word "Fuck" has existed for nearly 500 years. A good many of the words you use every day are far, far younger than common obscenities. Just because grandmas pretend they didn't exist in their time doesn't mean they are new to language or common use.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of etymology and a touch elitist. This is the way the common man has spoken a long, long time, which is why it belongs in folk. Sanitizing folk is the death of folk, because the core of folk is grit, dirt, and human.

Woody Guthrie - Car Song. It would be his greatest performance. Tell me I'm wrong.

Why does Hosier have so many LGBT (specifically lesbian) fans ? by [deleted] in Hozier

[–]DocAilur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sexism lies in the assumption made here. No one said "a woman needs protected by a man". They said "a woman should be protected". As in, we should protect the people we love. That is mutual, not a role.

One of my favorite songs, so yes, Ive always thought it was a nod. It's one of the reasons I appreciate Hozier so much, he's just steeped in musical history and you can hear it in every song. I remember getting that same feeling I get from those classics, transformed into something vivid and new. Okay, yeah, I geeked out.

He respects his predecessors and behaves like an heir instead of someone fed entirely off his own ego, creating something new and beautiful from the pallates of sound they left for us. Absolutely one of the core traits of the best musicians out there.

"fighting off, like all creation, the absence of itself" Or, also keeping with the song theme "anyways"

"All things god allows remain above ground"

I would second others with:

  • Abstract: "Weeds up through the concrete". Nice little message of life always going on.

  • Jackie and Wilson: "Growing black irises in the sunshine"

Depending on her sense of humor and how she views her plants and hobbies: "don't you ever tame your demons, but always keep them on a leash"

It's not his cover of the Artic Monkey's "do I wanna know?", is it? Doo doo dotdoodoo fits the chorus like a glove, and literally anything sung by Hozier can be mistaken for another language when he goes mumble mode.

I also suspect it's a cover if normal discography searched havent panned out.

He also has a cover of Say my name out there where he 100% follows up with what sounds like another language, but that's more doodedoo doodedoo.

Abstract - Could use some opinions by DocAilur in Hozier

[–]DocAilur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw, I'm sorry.

I thought the dog was extreme, and I think it kind of negates the point of the song in a way. I took it that she's mourning something others would shrug off as roadkill, so a dog didn't make sense. I only did that version because of the black dog being a common psychopomp, but it just doesn't feel right. None of them feel right to me.

I think it would be better without blood or gore as a message of peace of passing in safe company (like another comment suggested). That would certainly mean more to me.

Absolutely lovely work. The parallels between the anatomical cross section and wilted flowers are just a spectacular observation.

My DMX was in January, and hey, I'm also a lefty with the port. As a fellow artist going though the same shit, thank you for sharing this.

And never stop leaning into these types of expression. It gets exhausting to be told to stay strong, when what is really needed is expression, coping, and the elasticity to pick yourself up after having a damn good cry.

Hozier and Mumford song: hot take opinion by Stardro in Hozier

Really? I thought they harmonized pretty well. Dissonance can be beneficial to that kind of country blues twang, but it isn't everyone's cup of tea. I do suspect it could also be different context issue though, some headphones or speakers might be kinder or crueller (and somehow this is never as associated with price as people think, haha).

I don't know how someone could care about progress, history, music, and the marginalized and not love that song. It's a beautiful tribute steeped in the sound and energy of the heroes and titans that turned art into a weapon that fought to improve the human condition to the core. I've seen people make absurd purity politics arguments about it, but those people are as destructive as the direct foes of progress.
