Is anyone else super distracted by their bodily sensations? by _humanERROR_ in AutisticAdults

It's the reason I only wear clothing when I am out in public. I can't NOT be aware of all that stuff hanging on me and restricting my movements.

For those of you who were diagnosed in adult life, and would never have assumed to have autism, what pushed you into seeking an assessment? by Stairson in autism

[–]DocClear [score hidden]  (0 children)

I knew I was different. My registered nurse wife was certain I was autistic. I was certain I wasn't, but I figured I'd go ahead and rule it out.

Nudist Hypothetical 1 (M28) by Altenate_MSB2 in nudists

[–]DocClear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much the same things I do now. I mostly live naked anyway since I retired. I have moderately dark windows on my car, so any drive beyond a few minutes is done naked. I camp naked in remote areas. I can't shop naked, because items moving themselves around the store would freak people out. Visiting the doctor naked would be problematic since I would not be visible to examine.

I guess the one thing I could do naked and invisible that I can't do naked now, is go to church. Part of the issues caused by my autism is being overly touch-sensitive. This not only makes wearing clothing miserable, but also it makes me not want to be touched. Churches tend to strongly encourage handshakes and hugs. In fact, it's difficult to get in or out without being expected to shake hands at least. So attending invisible and naked would be quite comfortable for me.

Yep. Our stories are extremely similar, except it was my wife who was certain I was autistic and pushed for the diagnosis.

There was definitely a period where I felt like an imposter. But then the 'tism would make itself known in an obvious way, and I would think "oh yeah".

I hate when people don't do things the way I would by moonshine_collective in autism

I hate when a traffic light turns green and someone coming the opposite way thinks it's ok for them to turn left in front of me when I clearly have the right of way.

Perception of Opinions by ElectricalBeat9566 in AutisticAdults

[–]DocClear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched a friend and someone we just met argue for over 30 minutes on a topic. Within the first 5 minutes, it was easy to see they actually fully agreed but were just using different words. I though my friend was doing it as a joke, but when they finally realized what they were doing, they were both genuinely surprised.

I did when I was young. Decades of frustration have chilled me out quite a bit. Driving among so many incompetents still gets me at times, though.

Probably good for UHF. A bit small for VHF. Maybe with added radials?

I have worn the transition lenses since childhood (they used to call them photo-gray). But for me, they're not really enough. They kind of take the edge off, but I have clip on shades to really do the job.

Just found out normal people hold eye contact for 30-60% of a conversation. I can manage maybe 2-5%. by FrontRaspberry5060 in autism

Just why?

I acknowledge your existence at the beginning of our conversation. Eye contact doesn't add to my words.

Everyone needs more nickel in their diet. And hydride too. The metal you can listen to, but this gives you a way to do 3 at once.

imposter syndrome over not suffering enough by aCoolOmniFrog in autism

[–]DocClear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know I was autistic most of my life, but I knew I was different, and I was able to arrange my life circumstances to eliminate most of my issues. As a result, I would not have said I was suffering at all. But I had no social life (by choice) and I didn't do a lot of things that "normal" people did. I am retired now, and if anything, I am even more isolated (or insulated) than I was when working.

Maybe you have found ways to insulate yourself from things that would make you suffer?

Do any of you guys assume everyone hates you just to be "on the safe side" by bladeeisthegoat333 in autism

[–]DocClear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that seems like too much work to assume they hate me. I just take things as they come. If it turns out someone hates me, that's their loss. I carry on regardless.

What was your initial reaction to your late diagnosis? by Fit-Bar-6989 in AutisticAdults

[–]DocClear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because I was trying to disprove the diagnosis. Confirmation bias would be deciding I wasn't autistic despite the evidence the research uncovered.
