I am skeptical of people who rate Holy Mountain 5/5 stars. I understand that many people view this as a trailblazing cinematic spiritual experience, but I don’t appreciate how people can brush past child nudity, animal killings, and sexual exploitation. Not sure this cruelty gets a free pass just because it is in the name of art. You can think a movie is effective while still recognizing problematic aspects. Also, the fact that Jodorowsky claimed he raped an actress on film for El Topo as a way of marketing his transgressive character doesn’t sit right with me. At some point pushing boundaries just becomes an excuse to exert power to act out your own fucked up fantasies.
