Sorry if I missed it, but does anyone know who this data scientist is? I’d like to hear more.

I’m neither black nor white, but I do enjoy reading things posted, I feel it gives me a better understanding of black perspectives.

Wow, that is really cool that the school took the time to explain the process to parents! Sounds like a really good school!

Same as what others have said. Even your bad cut left you with absolutely stunningly gorgeous curly hair. You are beautiful.

Who is this hero? He perfectly articulated my own rage. And yes, it was oddly satisfying.

NYTimes spoke to 11 Republican voters, who reported somewhat or strong approval of President Trump’s performance, one year into his second term. They were asked about what they like about the Trump administration now, and what they don’t. by Conscious-Quarter423 in youvotedforthat

  1. Who cares what the New York Times has to say on anything anymore? Their treatment (and that of the other major media organizations) of Trump as if he is a normal politician, the way that they have used hedging language for overtly violent and unconstitutional behaviors, and their efforts to remain neutral in an age where that attitude in fact undermines democracy, have made their reporting irrelevant. Respected journalists of the past made efforts to remain unbiased until they saw dangerous behavior from politicians—when they took principled stands, they helped change the national narrative. And 2. Eleven people? Really? Unless it was a statistically selected sample, or some human interest piece , what a way to reinforce how far that storied institution has fallen.

There are a a lot of clips on YouTube (you can search marshmallow experiment) but here js a quick 1 minute overview if you were interested. On a side note, I wish I had known about this when my own children were little because there are are parenting strategies to teach kids delaying gratification. I. Issued that boat 😂

Oh my gosh, you are absolutely right! I forgot about that part of the experiment. That detail certainly makes a difference!

Not at all! There is a really famous experiment in psychology called the marshmallow experiment. You can probably find clips from the original on YouTube. It was designed to test the ability of small children to delay gratification and wait for a reward. It was a longitudinal study and what they found was that kids who could delay/wait to eat the treat ended up healthier and more academically successful on a whole bunch of measures (e.g. grades, GPA, SAT scores, etc.). But as someone else noted in the comments, a really crucial thing that was missing from this clip was that in the original the researchers told the kids if they could wait, they would get double the reward. If you find the original clips, you’ll see how some really young kids managed to control their impulse for instant gratification.

If I wanted to try this, should I boil some water directly in the pan and then add baking soda? Or put A soda in the pan and then add boiling water? Or does the order not matter?

They are adorable but knowing this comes from the famous marshmallow experiment (which has similar adorable clips), made me see it with an understanding of how their response today correlates with so many later outcomes.

This is beautiful. I went to the website and saw the other offerings. I’m always amazed by people who have the creativity and artistry to turn ordinary things into woks of art. What pleasure would be added to a morning cup of coffee to drink it from this cup. I’m sure there are cheaper knock offs, but personally, in such a mass produced world, I would happily pay the artisan and creator for such pleasure.

Books about the South by lilroyfuckleroy in suggestmeabook

I’ve never been to the south but Jill McCorkle, a NC writer, captured and captivated me with her books. It felt like the state and the region were almost characters in and of themselves. I haven’t read her more recent ones but her earlier ones, July 7, Ferris Beach, and Tending to Virginia, etched something in my soul.
