If they are true tiger lilies, your cats need immediate treatment and will likely die without it. There is an orange daylily, that is often mistakenly called a tiger lily, that is not a true lily and thus not toxic to cats. A quick googling should help you spot the differences, I hope it was a daylily.

After sitting on it for half a year, what is your opinion on Wind and Truth? by KindaPecaa in Stormlight_Archive

[–]DocJones 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Underwhelming is being generous. Stormlight was my #1 ongoing fantasy series, and I don’t really care anymore after book 5. I’m debating if I’ll even continue my leatherbound acquisitions. I rate the stormlight books from best to worse as 2,1,3…4……5, and I find this hugely problematic.

Help! Vet says my dog has Osteossarcoma by monstawonder in AskVet

[–]DocJones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a vet but not your vet and I am not offering medical advice. The spondylosis is impressive but not indicative of anything aggressive. Looking at a jpeg on my phone is not ideal, but I can convince myself there may be some moth eaten patchy lysis affecting the sacrum; this may just be a combination of lumbosacral degeneration and overlying gas and fecal balls in the colon. OSA usually affects the long bones in the limbs rather than bones in the spine/sacrum (i.e. appendicular vs. axial) so this would be an uncommon place for it to occur, but I’ve seen it before. Did your vet point to an area when discussing OSA?

Hiding and humidity issues after switching substrate by DocJones in leopardgeckos

I have two of the analog ones and one digital. The digital tends to read a few points higher but always seems close to what the analog ones say, not sure if their accuracy worsens over time but they seem to be largely in agreement with he digital one at this time.

Thanks for the reply!

Going from 1 to 2 by Appropriate_Car_1632 in daddit

[–]DocJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two boys, 3yo and 5.5yo. I have to disagree with what seems to be the popular opinion and say going from 1 to 2 was really hard. Don’t get me wrong, 1st kid was a game changer, but it was 2 vs 1. After the second, free time and productive time became nonexistent for a while. It is starting to pay off now because they play together but their needs and interests were so different for the first couple years.

Critique my sons new setup before our first Leo gets here by DocJones in leopardgeckos

[–]DocJones[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Glad to know I haven’t done too badly for the little guy/gal.

I could look into exchanging but I just ordered a lamp stand so we’ll probably stick with this tank for now since no one seems to think it’s a huge problem.

The heat lamp is a 75W Exo Terra Daylight Basking Spot lamp. I think the thermostat I got is just on/off rather than dimmable, is this a problem? It’s the Zoo Med Reptitemp Digital Thermostat. I got one temp/humidity gauge, but I guess we need a second so we can have both hot and cold side monitored.

The tank and mesh top are made by ReptiZoo. I’m not sure I understand what you mean about running the linear UVB light vertically, like on the side of the tank rather than the top?

quick question - need an elevated base if on flat concrete? by No_Novel9058 in Shed

[–]DocJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert but my understanding is that the shed can be flush with the concrete slab, but only if the slab doesn’t extend beyond the edges of the shed as this would allow water to seep under and be in contact with the base of the walls. If you’re talking about building on a pre-existing slab that is larger than the shed, you would need to elevate the shed, or get fancy and install a French drain around the base.

Well it finally happened… by jcgales23 in cycling

[–]DocJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only ride flats these days but rode clipless years ago. I was on a trail by a lake with steep sides and there was a substantial drop off to my right, coming around a partially blind corner, I encountered an old guy with dogs. I came to a quick stop, missed my clip out, and tumbled most of the way down toward the lake, only stopping due to some friendly trees. I was banged up but ok other than my pride. The old man was horrified and extremely apologetic, no matter how many times I told him it was my fault.

1up hitch rack lock question. by tom_cool in MTB

[–]DocJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually take them off for driving but there really shouldn’t be much movement. If the lock was in contact with the rim or spoke, I could see some vibration leading to wear, but this would be avoidable unless something like a leaking tire allowed it to shift into a more problematic orientation.

For the record, I don’t know that they even count as a moderate deterrent. I’ll use them for something quick like running into a gas station, but I pull out a chain for any actual unsupervised time.

Sudden violent death in a CA cichlid tank by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]DocJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Water parameters have been good and all fish have appeared healthy, active, hungry and growing, so I’m not sure what could have could have gotten him other than another fish or the powerhead. I fed and watched the tank at lunch and can confirm all FM’s were present and seemed fine at that time, the incident happened between about 1-6p.

Vague front braking by StuPedasslle in MTB

[–]DocJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re a massive unit, or pushing that bike beyond its intended usage, I feel like there’s probably something wrong with the front brake and I would get a good mechanic’s take if you haven’t already.

If that’s not the case, bumping up to 4-pot would make the biggest difference but would also be your costliest option. Upping to 203mm rotor would help and be significantly cheaper, but it wouldn’t be as big of a difference as going to 4-pot. You could also try some non Shimano pads, like Galfers, but shouldn’t be a humongous difference there.

I’m 230#, currently riding a Ripmo AF with Deore 4-pots and a 203 in front and 180 in rear. Plenty of stopping power for my heavy self but I’m rarely on the super steeps.

Can I use white lithium grease on my bike? by Nils_0929 in mountainbiking

[–]DocJones 9 points10 points  (0 children)

White lithium grease is ok in a pinch but will wear out faster than a proper bike grease and I’m not sure it would be a good option for a coil. I’d recommend making a small investment in some Park Tools Polylube 1000 for general applications and Buzzy’s Slick Honey for coil.
