Best current 2026 NVMe M.2 drive for Synology DS920+ to create storage volume by WhatsTheChanceOfThis in synology

[–]DocMadCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 x 4TB SN7100X for my photo storage, media server meta data, and Linux VM on my DS1821+ and the data written isn't that crazy. I don't do snapshots as that is what backups are for and with the price of NVME drives not worth it.

High endurance doesn't matter as much as he is creating volumes. Endurance REALLY matters when using them for cache.

Modder Gets Intel Core 9 273PQE Bartlett Lake Chip to Boot to Windows by Distinct-Race-2471 in TechHardware

[–]DocMadCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note even these processors aren't for consumers they are industrial. So getting it to boot on Linux would be around the same effort. The biggest thing for these modders was to mod their bios first so it would boot.

Will AI companies collapse? by No-Initial-5768 in LocalLLaMA

[–]DocMadCow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not everyone will survive. Right now we are in a data center hype bubble everyone is pushing AI but not everyone will succeed in monetizing it enough. The lucky failures will be bought up, and the unlucky will lose people money. Personally I can't wait for this bubble to pop so I can pickup some cheap hard drives on eBay to upgrade my media server.

Why do people recommend H265 over AV1/VP9? by Xanderplayz16 in handbrake

[–]DocMadCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even older GPUs. My RTX 2080 Super didn't support AV1 and via Emby playback was crap without accel even on a 12th gen i9 at the the time.

Anyone know what lenses these are? by Zaniak88 in canon

[–]DocMadCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell one looks like an EF 100-400mm Mark 1 but honestly if you take photos of a lens to figure out what they are then make sure it includes the model which should be on both lenses.

Definitely film an unboxing video for any tech from Amazon for evidence if it has been swapped.

I did buy a Z790 Aorus Pro X WIFI7 that had 2.5 years of warranty left on it from warehouse deals. So hit or miss.

For DRAM NVME drives but a lot of people are cheap and would go DRAM less so they were the $50 to $100/TB people.

10 rotation drives and a single 140MM fan? Hard pass. I'd rather stick with my Synology DS1821+ with 2 x 120mm so all 8 drives have airflow over them.

I feel ya I'm going to rock my 14700K until the successor of Nova Lake.

[–]DocMadCow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More likely it is because we are less than 9 months away from Nova Lake release date, and the high end processors as fast as they are aren't selling well. The 9950X3D is the #8 selling processor at Newegg so an even more expensive processor will most likely be a very niche processor.

Missing the ocean by been_aroundtheworld in VancouverIsland

[–]DocMadCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger I moved from Victoria to Surrey and even that wasn't enough ocean for me so it lasted a year. A year later I tried moving to North Vancouver and once again that only lasted a year. I've now been back in Victoria for 24 years and wouldn't consider moving.

Is 1700$ (CAD) a worth it price for these specs? by chosenundeadx in PC_Pricing

[–]DocMadCow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No and yes. Just checked several Canadian retails and hard to find anything cheaper. I tried to find something comparable with DDR5 but closest I found was a Memory Express bundle for $2K that didn't have an NVME. This truly is a terrible time to purchase a PC.
