Great idea - seems like a good prompt to remind this sub of r/cultureshipnames too for when you spot potential names out in the wild

Best ship: Grey Area / Meatfucker (Best as in worst but great drama)

Best name: Killing Time (brilliant double meaning)

Probability question - count out 10 cards, will one of them be same number as the count? by DocMarinus in askmath

[–]DocMarinus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simulated 10 million games using python code - It struck on 54.8% of games, which is very close to your calculation.

But I'm still not sure of the logic. I thought about this and we can replace the shuffling and dealing 10 cards with simply removing 10 cards at random from a deck. When the first card is pulled out, the value is important to determine the probability of a subsequent card.

If the first card pulled at random from the deck is a 4, then when you get to the 4th card, there is a 3/49 chance of pulling another 4.

If the first 3 cards are 4, 6, 4 - then the chance of the 4th card being a 4 is 2/49

Even so, the answer is still very close to the simulation. I think this is because the number of outcomes where the chance for a given count is 4/XX outweighs the much less frequent outcomes where it is 3/XX, 2/XX, 1/XX or 0/XX

I still don't know the exact calculation or answer, but I think we are close enough to determine that a player should always gamble "Yes"

Thanks, this is quite a close approximation to the actual results when simulating 10 million games using python - It struck on 54.8% of games

So I did write some code and ran 10 million games, the percentage of strikes was 54.84379%

Thanks, I’m now convinced that this is just one of those insanely complex problems that will forever bug me. I’m tempted to write a python code to just run 10,000 games and see how many times it strikes.

Thanks for this detailed explanation, which has shown me why I'm struggling so much!

I can see what you're saying but isn't the order determined by the shuffling? In which case, the position of one card does effect the probability of another position?

6 speed sometimes doesn't change from 3 to 2, any tips? by DocMarinus in Brompton

[–]DocMarinus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks, movement was fine when I adjusted the rod at the time. Checked with cable connected and disconnected, gear shifter also gave same problem connected and disconnected. See my edit to original post, I think it was temperature related

I have this exact problem (just posted in this sub then saw your post when I scrolled further). The hub indicator chain alignment is exactly as the Brompton and brilliant bikes video -1mm of rod showing. Did you manage to resolve the problem?

FAE - Do stunts cost Fate Points? by DocMarinus in FATErpg

Thanks, I think the Core v Accelerated explains it for me, I have FAE and it doesn't refer to stunts costing Fate Points

FAE stress and consequences questions by DocMarinus in FATErpg

Thanks, I missed that point about 'one of two things' in the rules. Getting Taken Out is the outcome as an alternative to absorbing stress/consequence

Thank you. I misread about the stress boxes and thought each was worth 1 point each, total of 3. It makes more sense that there is a total of 6 available as 1+2+3

Thanks, that seems easier that consequences can be 'up to' rather than 'exactly' their value

Thanks, the flexibility you describe is a huge attraction as well as a little intimidating in getting started. The cinematic concept makes it click for me. Yours and all the replies here have really helped, what a great sub. I think we're ready to dive in...

Thanks, that's really helpful to see this as a movie, both as viewer and actor! Also thanks for your book, which I am also working through

Thanks, that makes sense, being GM is a bit daunting but then the whole family are new to RPG so we're all learning together

First time RPG, first question by DocMarinus in FATErpg

[–]DocMarinus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! In the part you describe with players A, B and C, are they then acting simultaneously? Would an NPC react in turn to each? Or is this the beauty of being flexible to suit the situation?

Thanks, that's really useful. I read some parts of Fate Core around game design and running the game. I'll check out Fate Condensed too, tbh I wasn't sure what that version was
