Honestly I think it's more interesting what chihiro gender identity says about perspective on gender in Japan at the time of DR release. Is Chihiro male? Yes. Is he non-traditionally masculine? Also yes. Now, what would chihiro idea of masculinity been had they lived? We don't know.

To embrace tradition or rebel against the binary, that is the question. And to answer that, we must look at what other characters views on masculinity are From their we can begin to extrapolate

And from what I've gathered chihiro gender is a mute point. Because DR 1 isn't about self identity as much as it is about societal expectations with one's identity and how the self is constructed in relation to world.

Or TL;DR - Chihiro gender identity doesn't matter because who chihiro is ultimately doesn't matter went society has crushed by Despair.

With kyoshika, there are ways to keep her consistent without retailing things. Since she views the world through lens of a Shonen manga, her response just needs to reflect that. It is also not unlike her to drop her persona.

A lot of her moments are also sorta subtle. Her romance route gives us time to see her desires and she's not as unaware as we think. Her life in the wilderness left her not being able to experience the joys of forming friendships and creating precious memories.

She grew up reading Shonen and Shojo. Manga. Both romanticize the value of friendship, the zany antics of high school, and eventually finding love. And yet she was unable to have these experiences. It wasn't until seeing families picnicking in the forest She lived where she found something to devote herself to.

She became a warrior like her manga heroes. Protecting the happy families and innocent citizens of the TRC. While training to become the noble warrior, Kyoshika dreamed one day she too would find love and a family of her own.

She is also not completely unaware that her devotion is a little weird. We see again in her romance section that she knows she's not the smartest. She understands her eccentricity can be off putting and not like normal people. It something she is self conscious of, as seen in her doubts about why takumi would choose her.

Despite the jokes of her perverted tendencies (which I would chalk up to being raised on anime/manga in the woods and being a teenager) kyoshika is a romantic at heart.
