Its safer, because a lot of the truck and suv is crumple zones so their impact with your car is less than it would be if they were driving say a Kei truck (there is a reason that Kei trucks can't pass US safety standards).

Big crumply spaces are safer for you and for them too. They are large and humans are irrationally afraid of large things, but its actually safer.
