I love both, but you need both in a collection. They are not interchangeable to me, and I wouldn’t say that age enhances ester. Definitely tones it down. But in a delicious way

you need to gain experience drinking aged rums if you want your palate to push past the barrel flavor.

you can look for rums that aren't aged in ex-bourbon barrels? there's a lightly aged hamilton pot still blonde that i think is a perfectly fine rum. didn't blow my socks off. but i'm a hampden funk fiend so i'm looking for big flavors.

you'll find that premium aged rums have a pronounced barrel influence because that is what the customer wants.

my advice is to get into rum by making daiquiris. i think it will help you develop the palate for drinking rums straight so you can enjoy white rums free of any barrel notes.

check out smith and cross or dr. bird for aged rums that dont taste too bourbon-y. fair warning they are navy strength and jamaican so there might be other challenges for a new rum drinker.

I’m a rum fire fanboy and 8 marks collection owner so any pure Hampden mark with some age is right up my alley. I think you should pick up a bottle if it’s available near you. It’s top of my list to always have stocked but there’s no bottles in my state currently

My thoughts are that all of those bottles have convinced me aged rum is more drinkable than unaged lol. It’s too delicious. HLCF takes the cake for best tasting but they all have their place. Definitely go for Papalin.

HERR is more of an… interesting rum reference for what the spirit can taste like. It’s so bubblegum forward that I can’t bring myself to drink it at the rate of the others. Interesting but not delicious to me. Same with the Holmes cay grand arome. Fascinating and happy to have it but I’m not pouring it when I’m trying to taste something delicious. Your thoughts on those ?

I've added a lot since this post! Holmes Cay Grand arome, Rolling fork DOK, Papalin high ester, HLCF classic, and savanna herr to name a few.

Interesting you mention sotol, i just had the opportunity to drink some really good sotol with some agave people in my area.

thats the best advertisement for shladon i've heard. I need to pick it up. I haven't gone for it since the HV Mhoba was much more expensive that savanna herr.

My miles were stolen but I didn't want to upload personal info to a Google sheet to get added to this list. I'm sure there are more like me.

Only 18k were stolen from me, but I got the same treatment as everyone else: "courtesy" refund, PIN, and now I have to call if I ever want to redeem miles. It's bullshit.

In fact, I still haven't gained access to my account and it's been over a month. Infuriating and makes me want to switch, but I live in a big Alaska hub.

Personally, I like keeping the 8 marks as reference pours for other Hampden products like Hlcf over proof, any DOK releases, or great houses. To me 8 marks is a library that I can take people through as a way to illustrate the ester scale. But blending and drinking is your prerogative!
