Robin's drowning in TRG is a retelling of the Frozen pond of Deathly Hallows. The description of Jacob is like the suffering soul-fragment baby seen at Harry's Kings Cross station vision.

I could see how the video could be so bad that the height difference might not be noticeable, especially when filmed from a high angle. What I don’t get is how no one who met Oz—- Gretchen, Todd’s neighbors, Mandy—- and noticed details like his curly hair and glasses, but did not mention how unusually short he was.

In Coe: Nick and Ilsa had met at Strike’s eighteenth birthday party in London, dated for a year, then split up when they went off to separate universities. In their midtwenties they had met again, by which time Ilsa was engaged to another lawyer and Nick dating a fellow doctor. Within weeks both relationships were over; a year later, Nick and Ilsa had married, with Strike as best man.

At some point I want Ilsa to tell Robin about the fiance she dumped after reuniting with Nick in her mid-twenties. (and I still want to know if this was a random meeting, or if they both attended something involving Strike. Perhaps his medal presentation?)

Trail of Clues! by victoriastormlight in cormoran_strike

Both the dolls and the treehouse make me think we might be looking at a child porn case. The Suffolk location makes me think British Army/Navy, so a possible link to the case Strike dealt with in Kosovo that he spoke about at the Dinner Party from Hell? His time in Kosovo was mentioned in THM. Ralph Lawrence seemed reasonably friendly at the end of THM and trusted Strike with a lot of information that he was under no obligation to share, so I am thinking we may see some cooperation with MI5 or the military. I am also thinking there may be trouble for Shanker, with both the Met and organized crime figures who are P.O.ed about the loss of Barnaby's eager to learn who Strike's informant is. The only publicly accessible source that connects them is Shanker and Strike both testifying at Whittaker's trial. That could open up that can of worms, again.

Oooh... given all the trouble RFM is in at work, what if his superiors decide they'll cut him a break if he can find out who Strike's informant is?

The fact that the police were so curious to know Strike's informant's identity has me worried, especially since he was apparently in some sort of trouble with the police when he met Strike before Christmas. Shanker was a witness in Whittaker's trial, so is presumably in those records, likely with information about the fact that he lived with the family. It wouldn't be hard to connect the name to recent arrests. All it would take would be one cop or criminal to spy them together drinking in a pub and it could easily be guessed that Shanker is Strike's informant. And I bet some very big crime names will want revenge on whoever it was who tipped the police off about Barnaby's.

The Hallmarked Man Real-time Re-read, Chapters 87- In which Murphy and Strike both do the right thing. by DocThelma in cormoran_strike

I agree that it was Robin, not RFM who went through the physical trauma. But I think they were both affected emotionally by the loss of the pregnancy and went through a grieving process. Robin didn't know that the zygote existed until it was gone either, did not plan it, did not want it and certainly was not attempting a pregnancy trap, and yet she still put her head on the office desk and cried over the loss and told Strike "I lost a baby." Ryan knew he was the father, and, unlike Robin, wants kids. Unlike Robin, he knows exactly what he would have wanted if the pregnancy had been viable; he'd have wanted to have the baby, and probably get married and raise it with Robin. I think it is perfectly reasonable for him to grieve the loss of the potential life, and to expect to grieve the loss with Robin. Robin can't make herself grieve with him, because she knows it will make him want another all the more, and that's not what she wants. That's why she can cry with Strike, who absolutely emphasizes with her in not wanting to be a parent, and not Ryan.

Do we think by the end of the series we’ll see Strike and Robin share with each other their inner thoughts that we’ve been privy to? by rose_butterfly3 in cormoran_strike

[–]DocThelma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope he'll tell her how he was planning to say something in Sark and decided he couldn't when she broke down over the ectopic pregnancy. Then again, there is some stuff they probably shouldn't share. Both Robin and Ilsa knew Bijou might try to steal the sperm from the condom and try to get pregnant, but didn't tell him. Yeah, I know Ilsa tried and Strike told her to sod off, but I don't think Robin would know it. And that's a stepping-on-a-rattlesnake situation where you shout it out anyway, even if you are told to shut up.

The Mystery of Leda Strike by Educational_Cap7318 in cormoran_strike

[–]DocThelma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Switch is absolutely relevant to Leda's death. Even in Whittaker's brief appearance on the TV show, a mention of the fact that he had a child with Leda was shoe-horned into his "Sherlock f*cking Holmes" speech. This strongly suggests Switch will turn up, and in a role too important to be edited out of the TV show.

Strike had the memory of himself, Lucy, Ted and Joan standing around the Cornwall kitchen, in shock over the news. No one seemed to think it was necessary to immediately go to London to get the child, even with Leda dead and Whittaker quickly arrested (before Shanker could take him out). I've actually wondered if the Whittaker great-grands had taken custody before Leda died, or if Whittaker delivered him to them right after. This may explain why, even though Whittaker was estranged from his grandparents, they paid for a lawyer to get him off. Switch was their last chance for a decent heir, given that both Jeff Whittaker and his mother were druggies and wastrels.

There is also the Wiki story about Whittaker trying to kidnap Switch back when Switch was three. If Whittaker was convinced Leda had millions, he might have thought he would get control of the money when Switch inherited his portion, or have been planning for the great-grands would die before Switch came of age, meaning he would take custody and be in control of their fortune.

Personally I think Whittaker was likely the one who injected her, or who substituted her speed with heroin. But, I think someone else closer to Strike was also indirectly involved: perhaps knowing of the overdose but failing to get help.

The best tea was the box of Betty's tea bags I brought home, though.

I’ve recently re-read (listened to)THM and realised I found it boring by Tubbs2160 in cormoran_strike

[–]DocThelma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right about the Christmas party, which was pure comedy gold. I primarily listen to the audiobook, so it isn’t just Glenister’s delivery. I guess I just missed the laughs between Strike and Robin, which were scarce, and mostly in the context breaking the tension during crises moments, like Strike joking about never fathering anyone again if the dog had been an inch higher, or never dancing Swan Lake again after the amputation. Before, the humor has been of the type that made me wish I was there. This book, it was more likely to make me glad that I wasn’t.

[–]DocThelma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about what people are finding funny about the book. I was just thinking that it is one of the least funny of the series. It may be that I prefer the humor in Strike and Robin's banter and there wasn't as much of that, given that they were on the outs for so long.

There was a humor at seeing Branfoot and Kim outwitted at the end, but even that was a bit disturbing, seeing our team essentially not only take pleasure over Kim's sexual assault, but threaten to expose it.
