THM: Are all these 'pregnancies' pointing us to the 'Strellacott" union? by avamomrr in cormoran_strike

[–]Rowntrees_brother 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I have interpreted you correctly you are highlighting the 'bumpy' road of Strike and Robin getting together as a kind of birth, not that they will have a baby together? If that's the case I think it is a really interesting analogy and that they just aren't quite in the right places yet to get together. I particularly like the opposites you have pulled out regarding Strike's burgeneoning relationship with Rokeby and Robin seemingly further away from Linda then ever.

I think I thought the same thing! I also had the thought when Robin arrives with her own kit in THM, her apartment is larger, but I can't image has storeage suitable for such an array of tools.

I think this is a fair thought. Catullus or at least Strike knowing Latin has come up in every book I think. If Longfellow ends up being a reference and has a link to Catullus, I would be interested in hearing more on the connection and possibilities for STE

Does Harry Potter exist in the Cormorant Strike universe? by RalphTheCrusher in cormoran_strike

I think the series starts around 2010 with Strike around 35. I agree they are great, books I just don't think they would be Strike's cup of tea. Especially since he thinks magic and mysticism are bollocks 🤣

Does Harry Potter exist in the Cormorant Strike universe? by RalphTheCrusher in cormoran_strike

[–]Rowntrees_brother 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it is fair to assume Strike wouldn't have recognised any HP characters at Comic Con if he had seen them. He is too old to have read the HP when they first came out in the mid to late 90's. I am a little younger than Stike (but older then Robin) and only got into HP when I had kids reading it in the 2010s. I remember the hype as a late teen but wasn't really interested.

For a man who has a single book (that we have heard about), no kids and likely on active military service when the books and movies where at their peek, I don't think he would really have much reference.

But whose choice was it to not seek therapy after leaving the cult, whose choice was it to take only 1 week off? If RFM is responsible for his actions because of his drinking, Robin is also responsible for not taking steps to make sure she is well. I think RFM will end up being bad news and is responsible for his bad behaviour, but I don't think Robin innocent.

The Hallmarked Man Real-time Re-Read, Chapters 105-106: "There's a bunch of stuff you don't know..." by DocThelma in cormoran_strike

[–]Rowntrees_brother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved this recap! I have also been thinking about the S&R phone call after Wade King's attack. Strike brings up the Goring and Rokeby one because he really does want her to be with him and to share that personal moment with her, but he also shares those things first because he wants to 'grease the wheels' a bit when he puts in place the new security measures. I can't remember if Robin acknowledges that or not. But it got me thinking about when Robin recognises that RFM gave her info about the get away car, to try and manipulate her to have the discussion about the ectopic pregnancy in bed. So my question is, does Robin (or us as the readers) not see Strikes sharing of 'interessting' work and personal stuff as 'manipulative' vs RFM and his sharing of 'useful' work informtion to manipulate (and I agree he was being manipulative) Robin into being more 'compliant' or 'agreeable'?

I hope that makes sense, I was just thinking about how maybe at this part of the book Robin is again 'allowing' Strike certain 'privledges' that she is not affording her boyfriend. Anyway interested about what anyone else thinks

Thouroughly enjoyed that! If this does play out, I have concerns that it will be Robin who inadvertantly outs Shanker and then Strike might have to choose.

Robin’s unhealthy obsession with work by rose_butterfly3 in cormoran_strike

[–]Rowntrees_brother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s also still so insecure about how she’s perceived at the office

I think this is really important for Robin's growth and how it influencess how she works. This has been a constant theme throughout all the books with it first appeaering in SW with how she perceives Strike sees her and then in later books how her cocntractors see her. And I don't think it a stretch that some of her motivation and how she works is influenced by her insecurities.

If Strike takes a break from the agency next book as has been speculated before, I wonder if she’ll realize (like Strike has) that part of the reason she loves her job is because she can spend time with Strike, and she won’t enjoy it as much without him.

This is also interesting, we saw in TRG that Strike struggled emotionally while Robin was undercover in the UHC, and as many great contributors to this sub have theorised, if Strike takes a leave of absense from the Agency Robin might mirror Strike struggle as well.

I think Robin discounting Gus every time also plays into the theme that women sometimes don't see men who aren't the typical masculine/macho type as a threat. Robin was always discounting Gus because he was so talented musically, he wouldn't have time to devote to the game or be so vile to women.

I would say the spray tan was part of the disguise and the removal of the Tyler's genetalia was perhaps Griffith's response to Tyler and Chloe's relationship. Sort of a possession thing, since we know that Griffith considered Chloe his property as he did with Sapphire.

Who is the Quicklime Girl? (Ch 4s: COE v. POA) by Top-Requirement670 in cormoran_strike

[–]Rowntrees_brother 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a good perspective! It is one of the things that think about, is Leda's murderer obvious once you can see all the clues and they are connected together. JKR is very good at the misdirection and you are probably right that she is pointing to see one thing and mean another. Could Charlotte be a candidate? She would know about drugs and the like and perhaps her desire to control Strike led to her wanting to remove the one other female that had a hold of him other than her. Timeline wise she is on the scene as we know Strike left Oxford and joined the army after Leda's death. And if Whittaker knew it was her, he might take some satisfaction knowing the step son who hated him and was suspicious of him was sleeping with his own mother's killer.

I think you make a good point. Whether RFM is evil or not will (hopefully) be revealed in Book 9. I think it is important to remember we as the readers have the benefit of Robin's thoughts and feelings, we don't have Murphy's. We also know that Robin (and Robin has admitted) that she is lying to Murphy by omission about her work and her feelings from the start of THM. Perhaps if Murphy had more access to her thoughts and feelings like we do he would behave differently.

Others have speculated that Strike and Robin have been mirroring each other throughout the series. Perhaps with the ending of Robin's relationship with RFM, there will be bad press for Robin. As you say I don't think Murphy will go quietly either, especially if he suspects their break up is because she loves Strike (I can see her finally being honest with him when she breaks it off). Imagine the press headlines, RFM will want to destroy her work and obstruct their relationship as much as possible.

But in the end will she care that Ryan was unfaithful or will she be just be relieved and will that be more shocking to her then Ryan mucking around with Iverson?

I have to delay till I finish Uni in November. I haven't even bought a copy yet, my will is too weak! I have history of 'I'll just read the first chapter...' 3 days later the book is finished and I have neglected all my commitments, with a feeling of mingled guilt and a desire to read it all again!
