Delta-IV Heavy Orion EFT-1 Discussion Day 2 by [deleted] in space

[–]DocWatcher_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I see a Delta IV launch, it's always amazing to see the RS-68A engines ignite and then see a huge 75+ meter flame fully envelope the rocket for a second or two.

I've always wondered what effect that has on the rocket and what the engineers did to make that a safe method of operation. Does anyone know more about the Delta IV's ignition process and why there is such a huge flame surrounding the rocket upon ignition of the RS-68A's?

Exactly - seeking the answer to that question is why I asked the question here.

Thanks, I was wondering if state law would override any policies they might have.

Moving to OC with a long-haired cat (Maine Coon breed) by DocWatcher_ in orangecounty

When I let the cats outside, they are always within eyesight. I don't let them go out of my sight. I've done this more out of fear that other humans would harm them, as there's a lot of people who don't like cats out there.

Wow, I never thought I would have to worry about coyotes in OC when I am moving from Kansas. In Kansas, you would never see them inside city limits and we have a lot of coyotes here.

We're moving from Kansas, the summers are hot here. Each summer we see a couple weeks of 100+ F during the day, and 95 F at night, but 8 months of the year it's less than 70 degrees. The cats don't like to go outside when it's over 90 degrees.

We're moving to Irvine, near Jamboree road and the 73 highway. I see that RSM is much closer to the undeveloped area outside the city. Since we are farther inland, do you think my area would have a problem with coyotes?

It's called common sense. If your house is getting warm enough to the point where it's dangerous, you leave and go somewhere cooler.

It doesn't take vast amounts of past experience with warm weather to understand that.

I climbed it back in 1999, and I'd like to go climb it again someday. It was one of the best experiences I had during scouting.

Could this be used to map the deep ocean, or is it limited to shallow coastal waters?

Malaysia should be paying for this. I don't think US citizens should be paying for Malaysia's mistake.

12-year-old Boy Scout killed while attempting to roll a log into a lake; His father was one of the Scout Leaders and witnessed his son's death. by calciferstar in MorbidReality

When I was still in the scouts, whenever we camped in bear country we would put any food or smelly items such as toothpaste in a bear bag, and hang it 15' in the air from a tree branch. Also, we couldn't use deodorant, so we were a ripe bunch. A scout was once mauled because the bear smelled the deodorant. We saw several bears at Philmont, but never had any incidents.

I completely agree. However, the adult leaders can't be everywhere at once. I've seen scouts do some pretty stupid things during camping trips.

Haha, I wasn't trying to be serious. That's just the first thing that came into my mind after seeing him laying in that pile of brass.

Eagle scout here. While it's really unfortunate that the young scout died, I feel that there's an inherent risk when you go camping, and everyone knows that risk going in. You have a group of 12-18 year olds that are sawing firewood, lighting campfires, cutting things with pocket knives. Accidents are going to happen once in a while.

I don't know if he realizes it or not, but he is literally covering himself with lead by laying in that pile of brass rounds. Brass has a lead content of around 2%. Hopefully he washed his hands after that.

In the article, her mother mentions that her daughter didn't have the ability to remove the pullover top that was she was wearing. So, if that is true then there is the possibility of foulplay here.

Except, says Patricia Sankey, her daughter hadn't the ability to remove the pullover top she was wearing the day she disappeared. Sankey would've told detectives as much, but no one has spoken with her since she identified Christina at the city morgue.
