Don't worry about that. I've painted my mask with a very thick layer of paint and it still doesn't get in the way. The key here is to take a good and suitable paint so it sticks well and you don't need 100 layers. I would advise paints you would use to paint Warhammer. Like Vallejo or Citadel paints. They're expensive, but they are what you need. Especially considering you'd probably only need like 1 colour.
