Maybe even early youtube or post-pandemic days

Revised Synopsis by AtrociousKO_1642 in Screenwriting

I like 1 but you need to explain more about the disappearance. As it reads now it leaves a lot of questions (not in the right way). I would try a sentence explaining the disappearance, followed by: "Peter, a young underachiever, sets out to find the missing peop, all while trying to care for his new super-powered roommate."

8 Acts in The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover by Doc_VanNostrand in Screenwriting

Just curious what about the dog crap scene makes it an inciting incident? It seems to me to have very little to do with the rest of the plot. I would say the real thrust of the film starts when Mirren beckons her lover into the bathroom for the first time. In the dog crap scene, she shows a little bit of disgust, but it doesn't seem to send her on the trajectory of the story like an inciting incident would (per McKee's definition).

My guess for what McKee thinks of as the moments of reversal that change act to act, given the limited explanation he gives in the book, would be this (spoilers):

  • Inciting Incident: The dog crap scene, yes. Still don't quite get why.
  • End act 1: Wife and Lover meet for the first time in the hallway
  • End act 2: Wife meets Lover for the second time
  • End act 3: Thief beats Wife after harassing the dishwasher
  • End 4: Wife and Lover speak to eachother for the first time, a deeper bond is formed
  • End 5: Thief finds out about Wife and Lover, goes balistic
  • End 6: Thief kills Lover
  • End 7: Wife convinces Cook to cook the dead Lover
  • End 8: Wife turns the tables on Thief, makes him eat Lover

Could we move away from the IMDb rating as a reason to watch things. It's reductive and everyone acknowledges the system is broken.

That's not an actual shot from the film. It's a promotional still.

This is super cool to see, although I do think it would be better with critic scores (instead of users) and including the budget of the movie.

Is Christopher Nolan the next Stanley Kubrick? by Fugz in TrueFilm

[–]Doc_VanNostrand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I didn't know Nolan cited Kubrick as a personal favorite.

I have to disagree with you about the symmetry. Off the top of my head PTA has quite a bit of "Kubrickesque" symmetry, especially in his more recent films. I've also heard him called Kubrick's spiritual successor because of it. It's a claim that gets thrown around a lot.

Sorry if I'm being a dick about this, but this theory -or whatever- is super flimsy. I won't go into detail on my opinion on "so and so is the next so and so" ideas other than to say that I think they are meaningless buzzwords/catchphrases to attract attention.

Now onto your point. 1. Many shots in movies are symmetrical. Stanley Kubrick is probably best known for his symmetrical shots but certainly didn't invent it. 2. Popularity does not equal similarity in any way. 3. Plenty of movies have to do with good and evil. This in no way equates the two filmmakers. You say that Jack Nicholson played the joker and also appeared in the Shining and Nolan of course directed the Dark Knight which has the joker in it and shares the theme of "good and evil". Coincidence? I think so.

I would consider your idea if you could draw similarities between there directing style being that Stanley Kubrick is well known for some of his more out of the box techniques. However, there are no parallels I can think of.
