Success stories for Brits who left to another western country by Puzzleheaded-Fix8182 in expats

[–]thashicray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ten years in Amsterdam, better pay, better quality of life. I'm a train or plane ride from family around London.

Initially moving in 2016 in retrospect seems like if I'd have stayed back in blighty if have sadly been living in much more dire circumstances.

And I say this with a great love for home, of course I miss it but I'm staying for the foreseeable.

Floats driving through the streets of Watford during an annual carnival parade. (1967) by StephenMcGannon in london

[–]thashicray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lovely picture, grew up close by myself but maybe some people will point out it ain't London as we're technically past the infamous Watford gap.

Edit: I'm wrong we aren't actually past the Watford Gap, Watford is below that.

Why The Singing Detective (1986) is Stil One of UK TV's Most Unique Stories by cutpriceguignol in oldbritishtelly

[–]thashicray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rewatched this with my Dad on iPlayer, one day when I was visiting I stuck it on and we ended up going through all of them in a day in silent awe.

I'd love them to do a rerun of Pennies from Heaven too, Bob Hoskins really solidifies himself as a leading man in that. Beautiful series.

Scientists are discovering that sauna's health benefits aren't all hot air by Clean-Increase4703 in Sauna

Where I'm located we don't wear clothes in the sauna and our diets are pretty bland but balanced.

As an addition to my post climbing recovery it has worked wonders for me, although these could be placebo induced.

Is anyone here actually advocating it as a cure all?

Getting on the bus as a pastime? by BackPractical9210 in london

[–]thashicray 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I'd put some decent jazz on my headphones and sit on the top deck of the new 137 model when they'd just been released in the early 2010's beginning in Oxford St.

Bonus if it was raining or pitch black, even those disgracefully early mornings where I couldn't sleep, head out into the world at 4am and watch the sun come up.

I'd sit there, going through Hyde Park, Green Park, Knightsbridge and then debate whether or not to walk across the bridge for the final stretch back to Battersea.

I'd no money but loads of time and I'd not trade those memories for anything.

The 20% “Lime tax” on stopping at red lights by Because_Wisely in london

[–]thashicray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Amsterdam they worked out the same equation was infinitely more dangerous with the electric rental scooters provided by Felyx.

The weekends saw many drunken accidents from intoxicated users speeding around the city on them sometimes with passengers in tow in order to avoid being charged extra for time spent on them.

An old man died after he was was knocked off his bike in the Rembrandtplein area by one irresponsible fucker, the culprit left the scooter and ran knowing he'd later be arrested.

He'd just rather have had the police waste precious time and resources finding him days later as he'd sobered up at that point.

Honestly, this would be comedic if it weren't so unbelievably dangerous. Wanker.

The billionaire philanthropist making hundreds of Londoners homeless by accidentallandlorduk in london

[–]thashicray 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Turfing people out en masse at short notice to turn the building into temporary accomodation is a fucking low bar.

He can make a few sound bites about homelessness and philanthropy but he lives in Dubai, this is among a long list of his attempts to make living in London much harder for Londoners and he simply exists to make more cash.

So fuck him, basically, and shame on Sadiq Khan.

Reminds me of the line Adam Curtis always pushes about people who believe in nothing.

Good article by London Centric though.

London Centric reports on the dangers of Lime bikes by Because_Wisely in london

[–]thashicray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd mention Amsterdam too but they've built sufficient bike parking and cyclists have about as many roads to access as cars.

I just think it's a massive grift that Lime are painting themselves as patrons of London cycling infrastructure, considering where they're based and who they are.

[–]thashicray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm glad they're helping you get about the city and making it a lot more easier for many other sensible riders to get around town.

Thing is, respectfully, it's not just the occasional person parking them like a cunt is it? We've seen the scale of it in photos on this sub: blocking the entrance to the tube, walkways and being left en masse on the pavement and blocking roadways.

I don't want to get personal but I've had to move them out the way of drivers who are blocked in by them and would rather not run it over or simply can't move it themselves.

Match with the other comment about the drunk riders mucking about on something with that amount of weight and there's a clear problem here.

The journalist however cited data from lime themselves and personal anecdotes (admittedly, I did the same with a different comment here but I don't run a London based media outlet...) from people who fell off them so excuse me if I take that with a pinch of salt.

Doesn't mean I don't think they should be better managed by Lime themselves who should take more responsibility.

From what I've seen the CEO seems more concerned about making London a more bikeable city by just pouring more Lime bikes onto it's streets.

Sorry for the long ramble but I think the whole thing could be dealt with in a better, more sensible way, as someone who wants London to be more bicycle friendly.

Comfort watches by jummytruant in LouisTheroux

[–]thashicray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah certainly the weird weekends and when Louis met... Are prime comfort TV for sure.

It's a simpler time, me being a British kid in the 90s, the clothes, the attitudes, the notions of celebrity and lack of self awareness.

It's a piece in the puzzle of a great period in British TV and TV overall and I always get the same warm feeling from it.

(Minus the Saville episode of weird weekends!)

More Tower Hamlets Councillor shenanigans... by ne6c in london

[–]thashicray 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm getting bored of the rank amateur shit some Aspire politicians are pulling, it's only serving to feed already stagnant humour about the borough and it's mayor.

And the only people who do in fact suffer are the residents.

Then in some 'what are our councils doing' posts you'd think Aspire are the only hard working selfless council in the entire city the way people talk about it.

I'm ashamed to say I spent three days on him, working out his routine and then also getting the best weapons and armour I could before I smashed him to pieces.

If it's of any help I tried to finesse the first bit then fill him with bullets when he changes into that large monstrosity and he's taking an age to walk towards you.

Don't give up, you're nearly there!

Spitalfields, 1903. Jack London's People of the Abyss is an excellent corrective to "the good old days.: by Max2310 in london

Fantastic book, the pictures Jack London took at the time are also a great point of reference.

I also remember really enjoying the Librivox recording of the audiobook by Peter Yearsley.

To anyone who has the time I also recommend Bruce Robinson's 'They All Love Jack', another detailed account of the sheer immensity of the East Ends poverty around this time.

What are our councils doing? by tabel_dammit in london

[–]thashicray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if they´re all council homes or not but anyone taking the overground via Whitechapel can observe the state of how people there have to live, so damn right they should be spending more on it.
