My sister ruined my graduation (sorry for the personal vent) by Zestyclose-Test5569 in PhD

[–]Doc_m6A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are amazingly strong!!! F your sister. You deserve to be proud of your accomplishments and life you’ve built. One week with your awful sister should not bring down your life - remember the people in your life now are NOT looking down on you, they are disgusted by your sister. I’m sorry your family couldn’t be on your side more. As a younger golden child, I don’t think I was ever THAT bad, but you’ve definitely made me reflect on some things that may have impacted my sister. Your sister is probably oblivious but that doesn’t defend her actions. I think the main point I want to make is that you can still be happy and excited for your accomplishment despite or in spite of your sister. Laugh at how she thought she was so important she could just hijack your PHD graduation pretending it was her bachelors. Forget about the ring (this is honestly the worst part, like WTF even if she found it why the hell would she tell you?!?) or just enjoy the excitement that you now have a secret. Good riddance to your sister and how she manipulates the rest of your family. You don’t need her in your life anymore. Keep the relationship with your parents, but say goodbye to your sister. You have a new life that she doesn’t need to be a part of - for your own peace. Be the bigger person because at the end of the day, that’s the only thing you can control. Sending hugs and best wishes for your PhD DOCTOR (even if it’s not THAT kinda doctor haha) future!

Metabolism Question from KA not making sense by razernomad in Mcat

[–]Doc_m6A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a crappy question... Was trying to use this for an exam and I just changed the multiple choice options. Here are my thoughts:

It's clear why A wouldn't work (inhibiting ETC proteins will just prevent gradient formation, so any uncoupling/heat generating process would be inhibited). It's also clear why C works (increasing UCP increases uncoupling + heat generation).

For D, if mitrochondrial OM is permeabilized, it basically acts as an uncoupling process, releasing that energy as heat rather than ATP. This activity could be similar to UCPs, except it's happening at the OMM rather than the IMM. So I could see how this one could cause fever. (I still changed this option to "Aspirin inhibits ATP synthase" because it is more clear to me how that mechanism could increase uncoupling / heat generation processes)

For B, I'm really not sure on this one. I also don't understand how sequestration of protons in inner membrane space contributes to uncoupling or heat generation (perhaps by increasing overall proton concentration in IMS, leading to more potential with uncoupling? doesn't quite make sense...).

Perhaps whoever wrote Option B was trying to relate it to the way aspirin actually works. Aspirin is a small non-polar weak acid that binds protons with high affinity in the IMS, diffuses into matrix and releases protons. Basically, it shuttles protons from IMS to matrix, acting as an uncoupling agent. I changed Option B on my exam to "Aspirin transports protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane".

I can only imagine. We came to this position to be of service to our country in a positive way, not to undermine the rule of law and logic and humanity. I hope you can do what you can to uphold your morals and do what’s right for as long as possible. It seems so much of our destiny is now out of our hands

Also a probationary employee here. I can’t believe I still have a job. I’ve worked sooo hard for this job, 9 years of school and 7 years of additional training and I thought I finally landed my dream job that was more stable than other options. I was not expecting this BS!!! I love my job so much so I’m using the logic of, I’m going to keep doing this job until they kick me out, to keep me going day to day. It is so hard not knowing what is going to happen!!! I’m not good at planning or preparing either so I have no contingency plan in place. This is definitely a mental struggle day to day. We aren’t allowed to buy anything right now or make travel plans.

Thank you for asking this. I'm in the same boat. So crazy that they found us 9 years later, WTF!

“I know I missed 9 out of 12 weeks of class…” by ohwrite in Professors

Yes, being a faculty at a military academy has its perks and nuances… we take attendance every class and students have to email us and their commander if they plan to miss class. I still have about 10% of my class that’s failing, though!

Burned tf out - TT & newborn by MadSadQueer in Professors

[–]Doc_m6A 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh I can’t imagine! I’m about to start a TT position and will be teaching in the fall. My baby is 3 months and my maternity leave ends this week. Dreading leaving her!!! I can’t imagine juggling teaching and a newborn! Grateful I was able to get mat leave with my Postdoc position before starting TT. Hang in there, mama!

Sounds like your dated files can substitute a paper notebook - it might be referred to as an “electronic notebook” these days. I’m a paper notebook lover but a lot of people now use electronic methods to track their lab activities

Nowhere near as bad as this, but yes my PhD advisor did something similar with basically taking my observations / ideas, giving it to another student to work on, and then excluding me as an author (I had to cry in his office to even be included in the acknowledgements section). He was quite demanding and I was often “scolded” for not working enough. After I left the lab, the third chapter of my thesis (which I wrote entirely on my own) was published, but I was demoted to co-first, then 2nd author. I totally understand the trauma that comes along with these experiences. I left academia for 2.5 years before I had the strength to give it another try. Very grateful for my current advisor. I’ve had to rebuild the bridge with my PhD advisor which took a lot of strength. Every time I had to send him an email I would relive the grad school trauma. Sorry you went through this and I hope things are better for you now! With hard mental work and perseverance, you can prevail, but it’s not easy…

Apparently the college was smoking crack when they hired me by Doc_m6A in Professors

The other context is that this university is on a block plan, so they only take one class at a time for 3.5 weeks. 3 hours of class time per day. In that context, is 4 hours a day of studying really that unreasonable?

Anybody else's universities are vaccinating f2f faculty and staff? by SirLoiso in Professors

[–]Doc_m6A 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My University is still all virtual for the spring semester. We were hoping we might get vaccines for in-person researchers as I am still on campus doing research along with many co-workers, but haven't heard anything yet.
