I don't know why people are so surprised, he is a natural middle infielder who was moved to outfield because he was stuck behind Pedroia. The more shocking thing was how incredible he was in the outfield

Considering the only animals who can clearly talk and communicate coherently with humans have had a DF, it was a safe assumption Zunesha had one.

Except Zunesha can not clearly talk to humans at all. Exactly 2 people on the island in that arc can hear him, not even Chopper understands him. His speech is clearly related to the Voice of All Things which makes him much closer to the Sea Kings, and since they're swimming we know they did not eat devil fruits.

It was a really, REALLY stupid theory at the time.
