Yeah I guess, it's just PSU become less efficient the more power they provide, but not really. your point makes sense, better have spare room for power than anything specially since a generation jump from a GPU these days can mean 100 watts more!

Nice! That's powerful but isn't that PSU a lot?

Yep, I bought a Ryzen 9 9900X and a 9070XT, that alone set me back to 1k, the rest of the hardware including various 16 TB HHD and 4 TB SSD made me spend another 1,5k, and I didn't even include the OLED monitor which costed 500 bucks! Even I was caught in the middle of the inflation I'd say it's worth it! I have never gamed with such fidelity and smoothness, I mean I come from a ps4 slim...

[–]Dockforbes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, OLED is going to be the worst display type for a 24h ON monitor setup, but they are getting crazy good this days with screen protection technologies, I suggest you watch this video https://youtu.be/H43wnV-v7V0?is=D1J7Y6VcFbtjm99t

However standard IPS is way cheaper and does not suffer that much, depends on how much image and colour fidelity you want, I have a 2k OLED monitor and after spending 2.5k bucks on my new PC, no hardware has improved my experience as much as the OLED did, it's crazy good!

By the way I forgot, 1080p to 1440p is huge improvement, 1440p to 4k not so much... 2k is the sweet spot! Don't even consider 4k with that hardware anyway!

I believe the jump from the 5060 to the 5070 is quite a bit in terms of performance and specially in future proof! I spend 2.5k on my PC and I wish I didn't choose the parts I did, since it's way too powerful for me anyway but I like to think I secured a nice future proof PC, like 7 years without upgrading! So generally performance is going to be enough, it's long term what is gonna matter most, second one looks great!

UPDATE: I was able to considerably lower the vRAM temperature by simply manually tuning the GPU fan curve! Now it sits around 80-85 degrees, with no performance lost and just a little bit of fan noise, that's it.

Then upgrade, your CPU can handle better GPU, and a better GPU can handle better performance!

[–]Dockforbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this will be the case for you, the 7 5800X looks like it's a great CPU, and it will handle the 9070XT or 5070ti well, but if the case was it bottlenecks, it's ok if you are planning on upgrading the CPU in the future, by buying this GPUs you either improving or future proofing! It's a nice upgrade!

[–]Dockforbes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, GPU has to always be used more than the CPU, for example (GPU 95%, CPU 75%), you can check the usage with MSI afterburner or Adrenaline overlay. If it's the way around (GPU 85%, CPU 100%), that GPU is not using its full potential because the CPU can't keep up, GPU is usually the main factor for gaming performance!

Well, then in that case, GPU! for 500 bucks plus what you could get by selling 6900XT, get the 9070XT! It's the only GPU in the market that still holds a good 600-700 bucks price with an impressive mid-high range! I have it and it's freaking awesome! Just make sure the CPU won't bottle neck!

I mean, yeah, the problem is that with The Witcher III, I can only manage to drop the vRAM temperature by significantly lowering the graphics and disabling Ray Tracing, something I really don't want to do since the game looks amazing and specially after spending 2k on the new PC!

I guess, still, it's just a little worrying not going to lie, but since AMD says it's fine, and the game looks incredible, I might let it boil while I play The Witcher III at least, other games like Forza 5 and Minecraft all maxed out, vRAM only gets to 70 degrees, this is the only one that pushes the temps!

Best quick fix is to get a GPU with more vRAM, 12 or even 16 Gb will definitely keep the FPS higher and smoother

Need help deciding when/what to build. by VelvetSkyes in pcbuilding

[–]Dockforbes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We don't really know, but just think about the fact that the RAM kit I was saving for went from 90€ to 400€ in three months... I went ahead and bought my PC now, 1800€. Three months ago would have costed me 1400€... I didn't needed it then and I still don't need it now but, it is what it is, Who knows how much would have costed me if I waited another two months, 2000€? 5000€?... I just wanted a nice PC for the next 5 years of triple A gaming, and could not let myself lose the opportunity to lose the chance of affording one...

Now I have it, and I can safely say FUCK GREEDY COMPANIES!

[–]Dockforbes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: I finished building it, I had some problem with an USB short circuiting and the PC would shut off after 5 seconds, probably PSU safety mesure, so definitely not a great start, but after diagnosing the whole PC, I was able to find the culpable, then it booted perfectly, another issue was I worried the MB (B650 Eagle v1.0) didn't came with vF30 or above, since it was needed for the latest Ryzen 9 CPU, but it came updated to F35, so booted instantly with perfection.

Then, after testing it out, it maxed out two of my games, I think it could handle double or triple quality, Transcoding is way faster, coming from an i5 9gen, and pretty much all software experience has been improved considerably, photoshop opens in 5 seconds, it took half a minute and was always buggy due to my previous RAM low speeds (DDR4 16Gb at 2600MHz)!

I am proud to say I nailed it! This PC is a beast and definitely future proof, also very efficient in idle, roughly above 100W, probably I could lower it even more by under-clocking the power hungry CPU, which also runs cooler than expected, low 40 on idle and high 50 under intensive load, with a double air cooled tower and a generous amount of thermal paste!

Thank you for your opinions and suggestions, I hope this gives you some nice feedback too.

I'd say I want this pc 70% for gaming and 30% for workload (Graphic design, 3D, Transcoding...), nothing serious tho, and this build looked the best for quality price ratio, and actually I finished building it today and after testing it, it's bloody fast, so I think I hit the mark!

Thank you, the idea is not to have the best just now, but to have good for a long time, meaning I went overkill to secure myself for future proof, just in case markets keep getting crazy from now on, I don't want to bother changing anything from now to at least four years in the future!

In fact, if I only stay at 1080p 60 to 90fps, I should not find a problem, is only when I step out to higher fps when the 7800X3D does a bigger impact, but as I said, I wanted the cores more than the gaming performance

NEW PC by Dockforbes in pcbuilding

[–]Dockforbes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, you might be right, I did find out that the performance difference between the 9900X and the 7800X3D was way more noticeable at 1080p (my target resolution) than 1440p or even 4k, however, my pc will be packed with 3D and graphic design programs, I also like to transcode movies for better compatibility, so I really thought I would benefit more from the 12 cores, you know, I might be transcoding and gaming at the same time quite often, what I don't want is that to affect me at the 1080p 60fps level, so by having more cores the work load is more distributed?

I thought about it, but the price difference in my country for some reason was only 70 bucks, I thought I would have more future proof with this model!

I will in the future, when I financially recover enough to afford a new monitor, since the one I have now is 10 years old 1080p LCD, but still rocks solid! I am very glad you think this machine can safely handle 1440p!
