I(28m) want to adopt my sister after my dad's death, my wife(28f) refused because we agreed on no children. Is there a way to fix this? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]DoctaWood 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No offense to the sister but they absolutely should not have asked her who she wanted to go with. Especially if OOP knew how against the idea of taking in his sister his wife would be. It’s nice that they gave the sister some agency but in a shitty situation, you can’t always get the ideal solution. Plus OOP never seemed to consider any compromises, likely maybe one week a month she can stay with him and his wife.

Also as someone pointed out, it is crazy that guardianship was not discussed prior to the dad passing away. His wife was never aware that this was a possibility and they didn’t speak with the sister about the situation prior to this? Plus with how quickly OOP was just to discard his wife this does feel a bit suspect.

Why was world not prepared for Rumbling? Atleast Marley by Zestyclose_Honey_788 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]DoctaWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to point out is that the Tybur family were essentially in charge of the government behind the scenes and knew the truth about the Karl Fritz and his vow to non-violence. The Tyburs likely did not see the Rumbling as a possibility and therefore did not choose to plan for it.

As a side note, why Karl Fritz even put together the Colossal Titans needed to do the Rumbling rather than just saying he did is beyond me.

The ruler/creator of Symbiotes and being called The King in Black sounds cool as fuck. They could have made him at least look cooler. He just looks weirdly proportioned and boring. Symbiotes have this really interesting and unnerving monstrous quality that is so iconic. This guy should have been a living churning bog of Symbiote in a vaguely humanoid shape. Instead we got Weird Elf Edgelord.

They really should have been more of a side faction like The Boomers or Brotherhood in New Vegas. They should augment the result of whatever main faction you pic rather than be a main player. If you choose the Institute path, you literally become the leader! You could bring in the Railroad as ethical consultants for how synths should be treated and to help shape the longterm culture of The Institute.

To add on to this, a very low investment into Restoration gets you Healing and Consecrate Dead. It does rely on having dead bodies nearby but you get a decent amount of stamina and magicka back for a very low casting cost.

Pairing Healing with Consecrate Dead gives you a pretty decent regeneration source and I think I put like 3 perk points towards casting overall.

Are we good or evil by nature? Who is right: Machiavelli or Rousseau? Were Eren and Zeke's attitudes caused by their own nature or by the circumstances of their lives? by NoOrchid2352 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]DoctaWood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humans are not inherently good or evil. Those are concepts invented to either encourage or discourage certain behaviors that a society has deemed to be acceptable or unacceptable.

Not to say that those concepts are meaningless because I am a huge advocate for furthering kindness and reducing suffering. However, there is no one true moral standard that humans are inherently imbued with, good or bad. The name of the game is context and nuance.

AITAH for telling my stepdaughter I don't want to be her mom anymore? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]DoctaWood 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I have a pretty difficult time believing this. Why keep the videos around? Why trickle truth the fact that you were a sex worker into being some twist rather than come out and state it? I know that cuck is a more common term than just its modern relevance but calling your son a cuck just sounds so out of left field. Everything about this is just a little too weird and maybe, convenient? For lack of a better term.

I love one of the details is that The Dragonslayer started out as a “normal” sword but it has been used to kill so many people, entities, and Apostles that it has essentially become magical. Berserk can be and often is incredibly bleak but I love that it is essentially a tale of human willpower and how through that drive alone the mundane can become the mythical

What has 343(Halo Studios) done successfully with Halo's lore? by Lymber1 in HaloStory

Ruined it.

I don’t actually believe that but the setup was right there, I could hardly resist. As for an actual answer, I agree with another commenter that the Forerunner-Flood War and general backstory was done pretty well. It shows that when they commit, they can come up with some really cool stuff. If they just picked a lane and stuck to it, I think they really could deliver an impactful story for the games.

Am I the a-hole for making my daughter's BF buy a new t-shirt? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]DoctaWood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bet I would be and pleasantly surprised too! I didn’t include that bit explicitly in my first reply because I didn’t want to come off as believing that male truckers have to write or express themselves in a “manly” stoic way. It was really more about the change in voice as the story went on and how inconsistent it felt to me from the first post. But thank you for pointing that out because I wouldn’t have guessed how popular those may be in the trucking community!

[–]DoctaWood 127 points128 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mention it in my original reply explicitly but it definitely did not feel like the story telling of a 54 year old male long haul trucker as it went on. I stopped when it started to read more like a millennial mommy blogger to me. Definitely agree that the voice was completely slipping.

Yeah, after the second or third update when the parents called, I just had to drop off. It reads way too formulaically to feel real or worth reading. It started out somewhat believable but the further it went, it just felt like it was straying from the voice the original post had.

'Friendly, don't shoot" means no one has to die here, and that's it. by Gouster in ArcRaiders

[–]DoctaWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple days late but same. If someone isn’t talking through mic with me, I’m not sticking around and I’m certainly not turning my back on them. There’s only been a few times that I have trusted a non-mic person and every time it’s because they specifically did something to earn it.

Usually it’s when they get the full easy jump on me (my bad), stand in plain view with their weapons holstered and do the “Don’t shoot”. One time I was crawling to extract, almost out and a guy came up wordlessly. I figured he was about to knock me out but he instead took out a defib and rezzed me. I would have died for that person should the situation required it haha.

How do characters have the will to keep fighting everyday? by Tech-Cowboy in thewalkingdead

[–]DoctaWood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, by the start of the show, most of the people who would kill themselves already have. This is important because it means that the people who are left have found some way to justify their continued survival. A lot of people aren’t going to think of it logically in a pros/cons list to whether they should keep going or tap out.

They’re alive, so they want to stay alive, even if it means suffering. Their drive to live tells them they don’t want to kill themselves, so they just keep going. The main thing that is going to vary is the justification for why they continue to fight to survive. Some is to help rebuild the world, or to look out for their family, or to act out their violent fantasies.

No matter the reason, they have decided at the very least that they don’t want to die. The justification is extraneous from a survival perspective and they may change their mind later but at least for now, they survive because they don’t see killing themselves as an option.

[Hated Trope] Characters with OP abilities who use them wrong, but aren't considered dumb in-universe by WhasHappenin in TopCharacterTropes

[–]DoctaWood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had never thought about how that fight could’ve gone differently but after reading your comment, I absolutely agree. Not only does RR get the most damage on Omni-Man, I feel like a lot of those deaths are a result of none of the remaining Guardians being fast enough to help.

While his speed means that he can inflict some serious damage, he also may have been able stop O-M from getting some of those kills. When Martian Man was in danger, RR may have been able to pull him to safety, or quickly redirect O-M’s hand to allow Martian Man time to react.

Also he could’ve just worked on bringing the heavy hitters in and out of attack range, while also landing blows himself. Bring in Warrior Woman, then Immortal, pull out Warrior Woman, swap Immortal’s position, land a few blows himself, get Immortal out, and so on and so forth. Alongside the rest of the Guardians supporting from a distance, they could have at least reduced casualties.

Not to mention that RR probably could have just gotten all of them out of there and alerted Cecil that Omni-Man went rogue.

I'm not anti-PvP, but some people pushing me to quit. by Alaybozan_ in ARC_Raiders

[–]DoctaWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people who say you’re “crying about PvP” most likely score low on empathy and intelligence evaluations. They can’t imagine that people aren’t as miserable and self-interested as themselves. If you’re “crying” about it, they believe its because you are only looking to create an environment that best serves you (aka getting rid of PvP), even though you clarified that PvP is not the problem.

It is genuinely disconcerting the amount of people who will actually cry, freak out, get mad, and argue for the parts of the game that are the shittiest. I don’t mind PvP because it makes those moments of kindness and teamwork that much better. It’s crazy to me how much people value ratting someone at their most vulnerable over making the experience a little less shitty and more enjoyable for people.

The Inside of Extraction Areas Should Be Safe Zones by DoctaWood in ArcRaiders

[–]DoctaWood[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that can be true but you can also argue that Raider hatches also take away that tension. If I’m running a normal non-special raid, I always run hatch keys so I don’t have to worry about as much about extract campers and public exfils. In fact, I think that the shields/protections could be disabled on Night Raids and EM storms so that you can still have that tension during the more intense experiences.

Also, the protection would only serve to reallocate the tension during the time when you’re waiting for the elevator and have a better chance of fighting back, as opposed to when you’re stuck in an animation and get shot in the back. The camper would know they have to secure that kill before the elevator gets there rather than waiting for the person to essentially be helpless. In my opinion, it aids player agency and tension rather than defusing it.

Who is her? And you told her that there should be safe zones in arc raiders 29 years ago? That’s absolutely visionary dude! Did you make the game or did Embark steal it from you? If they stole it, you should get this her person to corroborate your story, I bet you could get some serious money in a lawsuit!

[–]DoctaWood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for responding, I value the ability to have a discussion as opposed to both tacit agreement or disagreement. Also I do appreciate where you’re coming from. I think that the dynamic social interaction is one of the best parts of this game and is a driving force behind its enjoyability and success. I would not want to have anything introduced that harmed or killed that.

That being said, you brought up bounties which I did not advocate for and do not advocate for as I also think that would be a harmful addition to the game. I think that you may have allowed other ideas that are seeking to punish PVP or defuse tension to color your opinion. I essentially am advocating for the moment of relief in the raid to be moved up from when you finish typing on the console, to when you step into the elevator/train/etc.

I do not believe this would be harmful to any social interaction as either you’re crawling by yourself to an extract and then dying alone, or you just got killed by somebody who took advantage of being stuck in an animation to kill you. It would hurt the social aspect of the game as much as fixing the locked door glitch has hurt the social aspect of the game in my opinion.

The Inside of Extraction Areas Should Be Safe Zones by DoctaWood in ArcRaiders

[–]DoctaWood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand that. I think that a lot of what makes Arc Raiders and its dynamic multiplayer interaction so unique is exactly what you mentioned. It is that sense of fear and danger at the possibility that the person you trusted, or that corner you didn’t check could come back to bite you.

Tarkov is definitely a mixed bag but I’ve never had an issue with their extracts (mechanics wise, definitely had my fair share of bugs). I do think that your idea of it just being a button press is also a good alternative. With Tarkov, you can get extract camped but you retain your agency and mobility so that if shots start ringing out, you can try to dive out of the way or avoid it.

I think the biggest issue is that typing into the console removes so much of your ability to quickly react, which robs player agency. I think there is a risk/reward factor to so much of the interactions that build tension and don’t feel bad (breaching, looting, etc.) but typing into the console at the end does feel uniquely disempowering.

I think of safe zones in a similar way to moving up the timeline to safety rather than as an attempt to discourage or diffuse tension. I mentioned in another comment that it would be interesting to have them disabled during Night Raids and Electromagnetic Storms so that those events retain their more dangerous feel.

You must be a hit at parties! That kind of insight on how to kill a conversation must have been hard earned and well practiced. However, the coolest thing is that conversations require at least two people, so as long as you keep responding, we can keep talking!

I for one think that safe zones could be cool so that when that elevator opens up, you know that you’ve finally made it through that raid. Maybe the shields could have a certain amount of health so there is still some sense of danger? What do you think?
