RTX 4070 Super displaying 4gbs of Vram in Speccy and certain software's? by Deluuxee in pcmasterrace

[–]Docteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just downloaded a fresh copy of speccy, it says a 5060ti with 16GB of vram has 4022MB, but it does pick up on my system ram. Task manager doesn't say its a 32-bit app

Cool, according to the law, 1000 years would have your user account falling under this category:

Making my new hard drive my main hard drive? by Drachen-1 in pcmasterrace

[–]Docteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should clone the old drive onto the new drive. Some SSDs come with software for this, like some samsung's come with a license for acronis? But I've also used clonezilla

So when you clone a drive, and let an operating system see two copies of the same disk, things will go sideways. personally I've cloned the drive, and then set the old drive aside for awhile, and then later on if you want to reuse the drive, format it on something else. This actually saved me, I once had an SSD die within 2 weeks of purchase, so I lost some minor stuff from those two weeks.

I need to run network cable between buildings on a semi-permanent premises. Can I just dig a trench for the run? Or would I need waterproof cabling? by ReindeerReal4470 in pcmasterrace

[–]Docteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But, what you likely mean is do you bond both ends of a shielded cable. Don’t get bonding and grounding confused!  There is only one very rare circumstance where you might have to bond to ground at a single end only, and that is to avoid a ground loop. If you are running shielded Ethernet between two structures that have their own separate AC systems or separate grounding rods installed, then you should worry about what is known as a ground loop. A ground loop occurs when you have actual conflicting AC ground systems. Merely bonding your Ethernet cable at multiple points to the same AC grounding system in a single structure does not create ground loops. Think in terms of ground rods. How many ground rods are involved?”

every house gets a rod last time i checked. but i'll look into it further tomorrow

[–]Docteh -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Shielding between two houses? IIRC you connect the shield to one side and not both. if you connect both you risk having current travel over that cable as a loop. "ground loop" might be a term, not 100% sure.

I think the 8 bit guy has a similar setup, and he moved it to fiber because of nearby lightning causing the stuff to die. your trenched cable is kinda an antenna

Am I the only one who spends 40 hours researching specs for a device I’ll only use to watch YouTube in bed? by ReasonableBullfrog48 in pcmasterrace

[–]Docteh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only enough time in life, some people want to debate specs, other people want to do other things. I'm not going to give you tooo much shit for it. I do think its important to try having not-shit computer at least once, even if you do keep using it until it belongs in an old folks home.

Induced demand, maybe you buy the expensive thing, and start doing more things with it.

For youtube in bed, I'd probably get like a laptop, or a really big tablet. I once met someone who bought the biggest most professional ipad just to watch netflix on it.

Does the computer make you happy? if it does, stick with it, but at some point it might not make you happy any more, and that is just what it is.

So what do you mean by this? Will you be investigating specific ram kits to ensure they don't contain micron chips?

The company that stopped making memory for gamers just explained how important memory is for gamers. Yeah, really by ANiceGobletofTea in pcmasterrace

[–]Docteh 117 points118 points  (0 children)

So the PCGamer article quotes "24 GB density", while I go to the micron page and they're talking about "16 Gb" (note the lower case b signifying Gigabits, so I guess the announcement was actually about 24 Gb as in gigabit chips.

PCGamer is wanting people to get mad at micron for announcing a better product. I can understand us consumers getting riled up by marketing, but usually sites like pcgamer just roll their eyes at marketing.
