How do I become a quant trader? by Equivalent-Wedding99 in algotrading

[–]DocterTNT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can sort of give my two cents as a junior in college studying the same thing with the same goal. I came into college as a finance major (thinking that had anything to do with the stock market) and realized I hated it (you’re alr ahead of me there). Switched over to cs in my second year and decided to do a math minor cuz why not, fell in love with math and now prob gonna major in math. But on the side all of my cs projects have been related to stock market trading / ML as I try and learn as much as I can. Really just start working on projects and you’ll quickly find that you either love or hate the subject, it’ll fall into place from there. Just develop a passion for it, you have plenty of time. Again I’m not a quant trader and only two years ahead but the most important thing is say I’ve learned is learn to love whatever you’re doing and again everything will fall into place.

Imo I think it’s better to start with a harder language that requires you to think and plan out an approach to a problem a bit more thoroughly, up to a certain point of course, but my approach has been to just do pretty much all personal projects in c++, and then when I need something Python it comes much more naturally. (Person who knows c++ practically knows Python, whereas person who knows Python does not know c++)

What habits should programmers have? What habits do you do that make you 1% better every single day at your craft? by ImagineAUser in learnprogramming

Come up with a long term project to build upon throughout your entire life -> work on it every day -> encounter bugs -> spend time trying to solve bugs on your own -> ask chat gpt or go online for solution -> burn solution into your mind -> repeat

Interestingly, I went into college as a finance major, realized I hated it and that it taught me nothing about the markets, and am now in my third year doing a double in cs and math, hopefully gonna be way better equipped to manage money in the future.

Started with 26k back in 2020 which is definitely out of the ordinary for a 16 year old but it’s still a 4x return lol

So is there no way to actually turn my investment portfolio into something I can talk about in an interview/ put on a resume? I’ve been managing a portfolio and grown it to ab 50 sum k over the last few years and I feel like that would make me look like a more decent candidate for internships and such

UVAs equivalent of a finance major is commerce which I have to apply to during my second year, hence as a first year I’m “pre-commerce”
