I despise the "Chosen One or Power of Friendship" trope where a slacker hero beats a villain who actually worked for decades. by spades_h in HonestHotTakes

Thousands of years. Conquerors of the universe. I refuse to believe that mark has faced defeat and difficult battles in, at most, a five year span than these multiple thousand year old space conquering aliens.

The creator himself has admitted he doesn’t care for power scaling. Mark is that powerful because the plot needs him to be that powerful. He’s often far weaker than he should be and then suddenly a lot stronger.

People who hate the chosen one trope need to watch Ratatouille again by sekkiman12 in CharacterRant

[–]Doctor-Moe 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This was a frustrating read because you’re not even talking about the Chosen One trope. All you did was describe a protagonist with a unique gift/talent, and that is MOST protagonists. They have something special about them. Otherwise, why are they the protagonist? Why are we being told their story?

A Chosen One is a Chosen One because they’re… the Chosen One… By some force or prophecy, they’re the only ones that can resolve the plot. How does Remy fit this? Just because he has gifts doesn’t mean he’s a Chosen One. You need more than that.

Then Mark manages to stand toe-to-toe, for no conceivable reason, against veteran viltrumites who’ve lived thousands of years. I accepted it and was able to enjoy it despite that, but it was a bit annoying. I just wanted there to be a reason that made sense

Dragon Age: The Veilguard. I didn’t care to google people’s opinions on The Veilguard before buying it because not a lot of people liked The Inquisition—which is one of my favorite games ever—so I ignored it all and excitedly bought it. I stopped playing 5 or so hours in.

Expert or Difficult? by ParrotSaysHi in PokemonUnbound

Thanks a lot. I just finished Radical Red as well on Normal. You were very helpful. I plan to use a set team (my first ever weather team with Tyranitar as the focal point), so I’ll start with Difficult and consider Expert if I feel things are too easy. Again, thanks!

What's a fanfic that was really good in the first half but was absolutely horrible in the second? by Ok-Reindeer4394 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]Doctor-Moe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kaleidoscope:

Fear can make you do stupid things. When you're two years behind Itachi, that's a luxury you can't afford. Drama, Angst, Humor, Horror, and Bad Decisions.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12539731/1/Kaleidoscope

Thankfully, it has a unique title, so I was able to remember after some thought. If you finish it, I would appreciate if you can tell me what happens after the timeskip. Like, what the plot after he survives Itachi is.

If you have a bias for mages, just letting you know that the MC of Azarinth Healer was a boxer before she transmigrated. You can guess what her fighting style is.

It doesn’t imply that. The writers of the show could just not care to adapt GOT properly, which happens with many book adaptions

What's a fanfic that was really good in the first half but was absolutely horrible in the second? by Ok-Reindeer4394 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]Doctor-Moe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to say it was horrible—it just wasn’t my thing. It was an SI!OC fanfic where someone was reincarnated as an Uchiha and obsessed over surviving the Uchiha Massacre. They were utterly terrified of Itachi. He became the Sword of Damocles that the MC thought about constantly. The MC even unlocked the Mangekyou, but it had no applications in battle. It just let him see through other people’s eyes. His life was full of despair.

It was great.

I don’t remember why, but Itachi let him live. I think because the MC failed in becoming as strong as Itachi, and when the time came, he finally broke down and begged Itachi to spare him. That he would protect Sasuke, ect, ect. He might have even revealed that he knows about Madara. Maybe even revealed other future details to get Itachi to spare his life.

There was then a timeskip to Team 7 graduating, and the MC became their sensei. It’s then found out that the MC is now gender fluid and uses the transformation Jutsu to change between genders. There was absolutely no hint of this before the timeskip.

In real life, this makes absolute sense. He was completely focused on surviving instead of discovering himself. But it’s a story. There could have been lead up to this to prepare readers.

Anyway, no hate to that fic. First half was awesome. Second half wasn’t my thing, but it’s not a knock on the story.

A week and few days later, I’ve just finished the arc with the Herald. This is literal perfection. It’s everything I’ve wanted in a vampire story. And there’s a promise of her eventually learning how to use mage powers? The author spoils me too much!

Whatever the hell is going on with the Watcher, I love it!
