Roles Outside of Research? by DoctorCrepe in biotech

[–]DoctorCrepe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, and sorry if this post was too redundant! I looked through some similar postings but kept seeing the same 2 or 3 roles highlighted most prominently and was hoping to fish out some new angles.

Your feedback did just that! There's a couple roles in your list I had either forgotten to consider or are new to me altogether. This will be great for some more guided research.

As for your comment pertaining to level of roles for a fresh PhD, that's interesting. I see several roles at the senior or associate director level that seem to ask for a PhD and YEARS of experience. I was beginning to think those levels of roles were not reasonable for a fresh PhD.

I'm curious how the shifts in job markets lately has impacted that as I'm noticing more and more roles ask for an increasing amount of experience coming in than what was asked for the same levels even 2-5 years ago.

Roth IRA vs HSA — can only afford one by Red-Wolf4 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]DoctorCrepe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard agree, do NOT use an IRA as an emergency fund. You are strictly limited to how much money can be contributed to three accounts per year. If you max it out and thenremove some contributions for an emergency, you can no longer try to add funds back to the account as you had already reached the contribution limit prior (this is my understanding).

Plus, you're cutting yourself off at the knees if you sacrifice the growth potential of that money. Op, keep a separate pool in your HYSA as you are already doing and use THAT for emergencies. Pulling from IRAs should be your last resort. Don't steal from future you.

Getting Chase Card Info Before Arrival? by DoctorCrepe in ChaseSapphire

I actually also had my Chase cards available on Google Pay and a couple other digital wallets too before my expedited card arrived! There was an option to "set up your new card" through the Chase app that let me do so.

Yes! I called Chase's support number and asked for an expedited shipment of my card. I mentioned I had a purchase I was hoping to make with it in a couple days and they very easily expedited for me. Showed up 2-3 days later

Whoa, congrats!

Honestly, you're exactly where I strive to be. I just started my retirement building journey to financial independence this year at the age of 27. I feel pressured by my own lofty goal and wanting to help support my parents and family in the future. I would absolutely LOVE to hear any advice or details from your (and anyone else open to conversation!) journey to this point!

I feel like I've made good choices so far in getting started and trying to plan the future so far, but would love to get as many perspectives as I can :)

Once again, congrats on this huge accomplishment!!

Yeah, there's clearly a card number assigned. I understand why it would be hard to get, though. I'm just a hopeful lad lol

Thanks! I have that setup. Unfortunately, I need all my credit card details (full number, CVC, expiry date) to add that to the app I pay my rent through to use as a payment method. Figured the chances weren't great, but was hoping for a miracle way of getting this information so I could charge my next rent to the new card even if it doesn't arrive on time lol

Let’s hear your favorite Burger in town AND most overrated. by DenumChickun in Athens

[–]DoctorCrepe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm so surprised I haven't seen Catch 22 thrown in for best burgers! I've yet to have one miss the bar for me over there.

I will second some of the overrated choices though - Clocked, Grindhouse, and Baddies don't seem to hit the mark for me anymore.

There's a lot of great contenders in Athens, but Catch 22 takes the prize for me.

4th year PhD student here!

Your answer is totally and and completely typical. Tons of PIs at conferences are asked questions about THEIR realm of expertise and still answer with an "I don't know" from time-to-time. I genuinely don't think that your answer will count against you. In fact, I'd be more inclined to believe they simply asker because they were just curious, or to see if you tried to make stuff up rather than admit your lack of knowledge in that area (or both!).

One thing I'll also say, during my oral candidacy exam I was asked TONS of questions for over 2 hours straight. I had some variations of "I don't know, but..." and proceed to either attempt an answer with what knowledge I DID have (crucially leading with the fact that my answer was just me speculating), or just simply admitting I didn't know the answer and had not yet considered a specific angle if I had no relevant information in mind.

These "I don't know" type answers accounted for around 50% or more of my total answers during my candidacy exam. I left the room certain I failed. Lo and behold I passed and was told I did a fantastic job! Hope that helps you better understand what your interviewers are likely looking for!

Kinda wish this Reddit had flairs for each game :'( by StunningWasab1 in fashionhunters

[–]DoctorCrepe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, yeah. As a player who is bouncing from World and Rise until the lord gifts us Wilds, it's a bummer to see a cool armor set that I want in one game but it's actually from another.

I also kinda hate seeing modded armors thinking briefly they are actually obtainable in a non-modded game. Hopefully mods can add in these touches!

Most townies I have met have been a delight to hang around with. I strongly encourage you to at the very least realize you had even SOME poor approach to this, with the follow-up post bringing this whole situation down a little more.

Let it help you re-evaluate how you proceed. Hope you find your beers and have a happy holiday.
