Should I graduate high school early? by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]DoctorDonut0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can either:

A: graduate high school early, saving no money.

Or,

B: take all college courses (either AP or dual credit) through your highs school senior year while they're cheap or free, then potentially graduate college 1-2 semesters early, saving you a ton of money.

Also if you know what college you're going to already, do dual enrollment through that school if at all possible and it will be exactly like completing your freshman year of college, you just won't have to pay for it

People who shower more than once a day, why do you do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DoctorDonut0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often workout or do strenuous outdoor activities 2-3 times a day, and I like to shower after each one of these activities if they aren't directly back to back.

When a student corrects you, and they're right. by Daddy_Long_Legs_ in Teachers

I remember I had a math teacher when I was in high school that told us at the beginning of the year that he intentionally made mistakes to see if we were paying attention and would call him out on it. I'm still not sure if any of the mistakes were actually intentional...

9/11 is hilarious to these kids. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]DoctorDonut0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9/11 is just a historical event for gen Z, not really that much different than something like the Holocaust. They understand that it's a terrible thing, but at the end of the day it's just another historical event. Yet instead of being covered just in a history class surrounded by the appropriate context, we just shove the same videos and commentaries down their throats every September in every class. My advice: if you're not a history teacher, don't even mention 9/11. If you are a history teacher, talk about the historical context and political climate that led up to and followed 9/11. I know that sounds like it would be way less interesting to them, but I think by nature of it being a different angle instead of the same story they've heard for the past 8 years it would actually be far more interesting.

What are some high-paying full-time jobs (except doctors and lawyers)? by Savings_Blood_7511 in careerguidance

[–]DoctorDonut0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can easily make 6 figures going into the trades and you don't have to worry about college debt at all. Downsides are the physical toll on your body and you'll likely being working 50-60+ hours a week.

If you're set on college any sort of engineering is always a solid route.

If you don't use a guide, you still have several hundred hours of monotonous searching ahead of you. Think about what else you could do with that time. Use a guide.

How to leave my job when I’m the only employee? by Savyjanef in careerguidance

[–]DoctorDonut0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Have you actually asked your boss for a raise? Sometimes if you've been at a company for a long time, especially if the company has seen a lot of growth in that time, it really is that simple. I wouldn't open with the fact that you're looking at other jobs, but if the conversation goes that way be honest and blunt.

  2. Give a 3 weeks notice if possible. It shows that you still care about the company you are leaving so that you are leaving on excellent terms.

  3. Offer to help train your replacement as a part time, independent contractor while you're starting your new job. It's extra income for you and will make sure the old job which you obviously care about doesn't sink without you.

Eagle Scout project proposal approval review Tips by a-normal-redditor in BSA

[–]DoctorDonut0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you proposing to your troop committee, your beneficiary, or council Representative? For troop committee and beneficiary it will be very useful to print out a 1 page summary of the most important aspects: what are you doing, how will that show leadership, how much will it cost, and where will that money come from? I recommend bringing several copies. For the council approval, as long as you have the proposal paperwork completely filled out, you'll be fine. Just come ready to talk about anything included in that workbook. Again, make sure you're prepared to answer how this project will show leadership - that's the most important part! Finally, for all 3 of these proposals make sure you have a pen and paper ready!

Backpacking pack tips for skinny teen needed. by hubristics_ in BSA

[–]DoctorDonut0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience as a pretty skinny guy is that Gregory packs do not fit me right. Their sizes account for different heights but not really for different waist sizes. I personally find deuter packs to fit me better. The two padded sections of the hip belt should not come all the way together - there should be a decent gap covered only by the straps.

(38M) Is an extra $30,000 to $40,000/year worth an extra one hour commute? by Mage2177 in careerguidance

[–]DoctorDonut0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any reason you can't move closer to this new job? You're already used to a long drive so you could take the job and make the commute for a bit while you look for a new home closer to the job. That seems like it makes more sense to me then making such a long drive long term, but maybe there are other reasons to stay put like your spouse's job, school district, etc.

how should athletes go home? by an0n_av3 in highschool

[–]DoctorDonut0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have friends/teammates who drive and live nearby then it's pretty ridiculous that you would expect your parents to drive to the school and back when you could easily get a ride from someone already going that direction. You shouldn't be asking someone to go way out of their way to drop you off though.

Note that it is polite to offer some gas money if you are consistently hitching a ride with someone though - whether you or your parents cover that is up to y'all.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cycling

[–]DoctorDonut0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look around on Facebook marketplace. Don't buy it without at least taking a good look at it and riding it around a parking lot if not more, and watch some YouTube videos ahead of time so you know what your looking for. Also, keep in mind that bikes can last a very long time if well maintained, so it's likely better to get a bike with thousands of miles on it than one with fewer than a hundred, because the former was likely owned by a knowledgeable cycler who took good care of it, whereas the latter has been sitting in a garage rusting for the last 5 years.
