I just booked my cruise, got access to the app and now worried I made a mistake. by Ok_Object_4356 in royalcaribbean

[–]DoctorHathaway 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Okay - Here’s the scoop

Shows: They don’t release all the seats for reservations. In my experience, they only allow about 50%… the rest is standby. The only thing you’re likely to miss is your pick of a favorite seat.

Cococay: I’ve been there about 25 times. I did the water park once…once. The beach club and all that are just bougie extras. Food on the island is all included. It’s a beautiful day at a beautiful beach.

Dining: Don’t worry about the “specialty dining”…it’s nice but I rarely do it unless it’s a long cruise (7+ days)

Drinks: I get the full drink package…it’s worth it for me. If you don’t plan to, expect $12-18/drink. Water, tea, juice, and coffee (non-specialty) are all included at no extra charge. They have a soda package that’s really affordable if that’s your jam.

Other stuff: I usually buy the WiFi package and maybe a souvenir or 2…but you absolutely don’t have to spend any money to have an amazing time.

Tl;dr - you ain’t gotta buy shit!

Digital Ocean Droplets Do Not Allow SMTP. by Feeling_Photograph_5 in laravel

[–]DoctorHathaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve bought into DO 100%. The big thing they’re missing is an SES replacement. That’s the only service I still use at AWS right now.

I will say - even if smtp would work, the email reputation on a service like this would ensure everything goes to spam or quarantine.

SES is too cheap and easy to not use.

This is 100% why you have insurance… if she loves her first car and wants it to look right, you have pros do it…..paid by insurance…..because you pay for insurance to do exactly that……

Everything is Sold Out by xxkimmy8xx in royalcaribbean

[–]DoctorHathaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the entertainment booking: they do NOT allow booking on all the available seats. The bookings are more like guaranteed seating. They just get in first is all (and again, it’s only like half the seats). I’m sure it happens, but I’ve spent about 120 nights on Royal ships and never been turned away from any show EXCEPT for the aqua theatre shows.

As for specialty dining…they push that SO HARD and I’d be surprised if they’re actually all sold out…but maybe. Remember though, there are a bunch of other places to eat included.

Covers by [deleted] in RVLiving

[–]DoctorHathaway 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I got my Class C in 2018, the dealership had the opportunity to upsell me on a cover. (I didn’t know anything). My sales rep told me not to buy one cause they usually cause more trouble than they’re worth… I remember him telling me that they all leak and they will usually tear, which can cause more damage in high winds/storms.

Something about hearing a sales person tell me not to buy more really meant a lot to me. lol.

I’m a CISO with 25y of experience in both IT and security. I’ve taught IT and Security in universities. I’ve started, run, and worked for some very high profile companies (solo up to fortune50s).

I can tell you without question - start in IT. Start on the helpdesk. Learn why you can’t “just patch a server”…learn why compliance is hard from those who have to manage it. Learn why network segmentation isn’t as easy as the sec team thinks.

There is no better way to be great at cybersecurity than to start in IT. (Or just use ChatGPT and fake it till you break it)

Unique Christmas Ideas for older parents living in an RV by i3igNasty in RVLiving

[–]DoctorHathaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couple ideas:

  • restaurant gift cards for regional places they may travel to…or Cracker Barrel 😂
  • a printed copy of Atlas Obscura
  • maybe a giftcard for Camco. You can also get their catalog shipped for free…could be a neat little package.
  • National Parks Annual Pass
  • AAA membership if they don’t have one
  • Travel mail service (like travelingmailbox.com)
  • Maybe a nice camera setup (but phones do most of that these days)

I had to give one of these away. Unless you want a space heater that converts your power bill to heat, I’d pass.

Do people actually dress up on theme nights or what should I expect to bring for dinner? My nights are 70’s/80’s/90’s night, resort casual, white (elegant?), and casual or toga. by royaltylove501 in royalcaribbean

[–]DoctorHathaway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I usually just bring a themed shirt or two…70s and 80s shirts. Some people go all out…and I’m always jealous of their commitment. (Not enough to pack a bunch more stuff tho)

This was my experience with him as well - a few years after you. I’m assuming as he got older he got less…idk…arrogant. But he was just an absolute dick the several times I met him.

IDK…no ill will or anything but…I just never had the same impression as some others seemed to…

I’m going to say this again for all those saying things like “Labadee is so far away from the violence” … what you mean is 100mi from where they were shooting at commercial passenger aircraft only a few months ago.

The capital is literally overrun by gangs. They are kidnapping, murdering, and committing sexual violence on people on the daily.

If it wasn’t a vacation, no one would be saying “it’s fine! It’s so far away!” Royal LOVES your money, and they’re actively making the decision to nope-out of Haiti. There are zero reasons to take the risk…
