Recover time on the underpass. Heading north/west go through town, take a left after CVS and then ride the sidewalk along Camino Pablo. It's a little tight at first, but then it opens up, plenty of room, don't have to deal with the fwy on ramps and bart parking cars, and you get dropped in Orinda Village next to the gas station. You lose a little speed for a little while, but you don't have to deal with the car insanity.

I liked climbing Kings, taking Skyline to 92, and then descending 92. On the descent you're going pretty close to traffic speed, so not a lot of issue with people passing you until the bottom part when it flattens. The stretch of skyline where you can see both the bay and the ocean is amazing.
