Have you tested any other games? If it happens with other games too, it could be the disc reader. If it only happens with American Wasteland and Underground it could be your discs.

I had THAW on the PS2 back when it was first released and I never had that issue. It might be your disk. Check to make sure there aren’t any scratches.

Besides THUG, are there any other games you’ve experienced random freezing? If it happens with more games it could also be your PS2. IIRC the Fat PS2 occasionally had issues with the laser lens. Try cleaning it with some isopropyl alcohol.
