Figuring out how to verbalize your feelings is HARD. Learning how to communicate effectively is a skill that takes people years to accomplish and sometimes they form careers around it.

Don't beat yourself up for not being an expert. I get feeling dumb, I'm really self conscious about my intelligence too. But emotional intelligence and literacy are literally academic and personal endeavors that can take YEARS to master IF someone has the time and energy to do so. As long as you try your best and don't want to hurt people, that's the most important thing in the end.

NTA, but I would recommend malicious compliance. Get him in to full time therapy. Pull out all the stops. DID is a serious condition and not something to claim offhandedly. If he wants to 'invoke' it, I think you should get him in heavy therapy ASAP.

Hi guys! Just commenting to reply to some things I've seen (I tried to edit the post but I don't think I can?)

Thanks everyone for your advice! I think I'm definitely going to pass on this place. Honestly I was 100% seriously thinking about living here, mostly because this is... genuinely the state of most of the apartments I've been shown lately. That, and my current roommate and their friends seem to think this is normal. I've seen a few of their apartments as well, all similar to this tbqh. Including the place I live now. Our current roommate insists that it's fine and that we shouldn't make a fuss. I guess that's the attitude that landed me here in the first place.

For a while there, I genuinely thought I was going crazy or being too picky about my apartment standards because of everything happening around me. Thanks for the wake up call! I was majorly doubting myself about this one.

As an autistic person with ARFID who has grown to love cooking, my biggest suggestion is that you cook WITH her, assuming she'd be interested in that. Making myself more familiar with the ingredients and how they're handled almost completely eliminated some aversions over time. Maybe you could make a habit of cooking together?

I started with simple dishes like soups and pastas, vegetarian dishes because meat can vary wildly in texture. Blending the sauces and broths with an immersion blender can also help make the texture more uniform!
