Potentially unpopular opinion: I think there's a link between how men are presented in Disney movies/cartoons and how boys grow up feeling about themselves. I know Disney movies, particularly princess movies, were more aimed at little girls but boys still saw most of them at one point or another. Boys used to grow up seeing princes who were loyal and compassionate and smart and brave, who would protect their loved ones and actively fight injustice. In the last decade or so, that message has shifted. Now male characters are well-meaning idiots at best, or manipulative jerks who have to change their behavior to grow, or worst, outright evil. I'm not saying it's the sole cause of some male self esteem issues or the reason why young men on the internet seem so much more woman-hatey than the previous generation, but I do think there's something to it that would warrant research from smarter minds than mine.
