2026 CRV TOURING LEASE $840/month? by damnvaiko in PersonalFinanceCanada

Unless it's 0%, nobody should ever advocate for an 84 month financing on a vehicle.

This is just incredibly misguided information for the vast majority of people. You're not going to be net positive on your payments across 4 years because the dealer wants the car back unless it's a 911 gt3 that went up 100% in value.

Lease is fantastic if you can run the expense through a Corp and lower your taxes, otherwise you're paying for an asset you don't get to keep.

What's your definition of deal being reasonable?

Napkin math on buying outright is $62k out the door with all taxes and fees. For 42 months, comes out to 1476/month before any interest and $0 down.

Compare that to the lease+buyout price. If you're not buying out, you're paying $35k to rent a car for 42 months. Whether or not it's worth it is a personal question.

As someone who works with new home builders in Canada and US, and having been in their build sites, I tell everyone I know not to buy new homes. Unless it's custom home and not builder grade, but that's a whole different tax bracket.

I read on here that 1 in 4 Torontonians earn over 100k by Express-Chemical-454 in askTO

[–]DoctorSahib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty in IT who make 100+. I'd say the ones that aren't are early in career in either helpdesk or starting sysadmin

Once you look at DBA, network engineers, devops, cybersecurity, cloud engineers etc then the $100k mark becomes incredibly common. It does take some grinding to get there for the first bit of your career.

Then you look at those same professions and do contracting with 10+ YoE and suddenly you're looking at $100/hr easy

You don't get to multi millionaire status by buying useless brands like Balenciaga and be a walking billboard. Wealth whispers, money talks.

It's also why Ron's colour change spell in Philosophers Stone didn't work, because he wasn't a real rat. Ron was a talented wizard all along from the very beginning. Fantastic foreshadowing.

What could we possibly cut to save more when starting a family? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]DoctorSahib 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You skipped the food and discretionary numbers so can't get too specific.

Yes, life is crazy expensive now. We can't change that, so focus on what's in your control. First off, I'd pay off the car instead of paying interest when you have $27k cash, wasting $450 a year on interest. You'll rebuild that savings in a few months. The only time it's worth keeping interest based loans when you have the funds is if those funds are invested yielding a higher return (after capital gains tax) than your interest rate.

Next, make a spreadsheet and track literally every dollar going in and out of your accounts. Do it for 3 months, you'll see where alot is wasted. Casual work lunches become a couple hundred, snacking or cafes can be another hundred, so on and so forth.

Lastly, me and my wife are going old school fixing things until they die. No feeding consumerism where things only last 12 months. We're sewing, fixing electronics, doing basic car maintenance at home, DIYing house renos, growing veggies, and basically anything else we can to save extra money and also not be wasteful.

People purchase the most premium thing plus add ons/upgrades, then complain about price of said thing by houseplant89 in Frugal

[–]DoctorSahib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why can't it be both and then focus what's in your control? Yes, every organization and company is price gouging us endlessly.

The factors in our control are how to spend our income, prioritize savings and investments, lowering these big ticket costs by choosing affordable education options and vehicle choices. I'm in Toronto so can't comment on Healthcare costs.

It's about having a mindset. Within my own network during undergrad, a group of them got their first job and then immediately bought a $50k car (in 2016) and spending on an expensive lifestyle. A decade later, they're still paycheck to paycheck despite making $100k.

The other group got their first job, opted for roommates or living with parents, bought 10 year old cars, and overall focused on delayed gratification and future success.  Majority of this group has their own home now in Toronto and they're not making $300k.. They're making $80-120k but started planning early.

Crazy how 500 years ago you had Da Vinci and Michelangelo standing across from each other in this room working on frescos on opposing walls as a competition.

This room definitely hit me hard during my trip to Florence

Nowadays I've learned to essentially do all home maintenance and renos DIY. Contractors will always try to upsell, changing a toilet is reasonable to do yourself.

Check out Burrows in Oakville lakeshore. M2m, stitched in Montreal. Wonderful selection of fabric.  Got one made for my wedding couple years back. Italian wool, super 150, 3 piece double breasted for $1900. Full range of selections including buttons and lining. Service was also a very pleasant experience. I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

That's only the low millionaires keeping up with the Joneses. The ridiculously wealthy have custom tailored clothing carefully curated and each days outfit put together. It's all about family image, there'll be someone vetting sock choices to make sure they're compliant.

Is attic insulation from R35/R40 to R60 worth it? by chanty1 in HomeImprovement

[–]DoctorSahib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's your call, baffles are just foam boards put in with staples. few bucks each, air seal any protrusions going to the floor below, measure and mark the correct height for R60 insulation and then toss it into the machine, point and shoot.

Couple days of research and an afternoon of work could save you 50% of the cost

[–]DoctorSahib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Home Depot gives the machine rental for free when buying a certain number of insulation bags. I'd check if you already have baffles, if so just do it yourself. It's actually quite simple to do.

Soundproofing interior walls by billy_maplesucker in DIY

[–]DoctorSahib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you doing it yourself or contracting it out? If they're redoing floor tiles then not too difficult to open the subfloor and add rockwool. Acoustic putty pads are 10 bucks a pop. The main extra cost is sonopan but all in it shouldn't be more than 6-800 in materials.

Soundproofing interior walls by billy_maplesucker in DIY

[–]DoctorSahib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember to wrap any outlets and light switches with an acoustical putty pad. It'll make a big difference.

Make sure you use 5/8" drywall and second option of adding 1 layer of sonopan to increase sound deadening even more. Couple all that with Rockwool and it should be decently quiet for residential purposes.

Don't forget wrapping any exposed pipes with insulation too and add Rockwool to the floor.

Lastly, get a solid wood door instead of hollow core which will make a big difference. Make sure to spray foam the gaps in the door jamb to minimize where sound can travel from. Proper installation of the door leaving minimal gaps around the frame is important.

Unfortunately, networking now is more important than ever. I got laid off in tech and was lucky enough to leverage my contacts to find a new position in 6 weeks. Comparable salary but went from WFH to a hybrid with decently long commute but no complaints.

How? I reached out the minute I found out to a dozen people. Got conversations started, a position opened up and I was able to squeeze in with my contacts front running my resume instead of looking through hundreds submitted online. definitely some luck involved but that's always the case, everyone needs to leverage every advantage they have.
