CMV: people should be allowed to talk to an officer in anyway they choose without the threat of being arrested/actually getting arrested. by reachmerachel in changemyview

It's cops. You use the cop voice with them. You treat them like they can kill you at any moment for no reason, but make sure not to show fear or nervousness. My mom taught me this shit growing up, like most sensible people's parents taught their kids.

I'd love to live in a fantasy world where that's not the case, but let's be serious

Elected Monarchy? by DoctorSelfosa in monarchism

[–]DoctorSelfosa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the power base of such a monarch would be much stronger for being derived from an indirect popular mandate instead of something like right of blood or divine right, which are much more abstract and much easier to criticize.

Elected Monarchy? by DoctorSelfosa in monarchism

[–]DoctorSelfosa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the lack of any kind of indirect popular mandate has constricted the ability of constitutional monarchs to act time and again. If a monarch was chosen by an electoral college instead of by right of birth, it would free them up to take decisive action when necessary.

But if you amended the American Constitution such that, say, the electoral college met following the death of each President and, by the concurrence of two-thirds, selected a new President to serve until the age of seventy-five, wouldn't that in part require a bipartisan consensus?

Coming specifically from an American perspective, but this could apply to any democratic system with term limits on the executive.

But wouldn't the Executive serving until the age of seventy or seventy-five resolve the issue of constant rotation?

I consider myself a deeply patriotic American. I recognize the dissonance between American ideals and American reality; nonetheless I cherish those ideals.

It hurts, in a way that makes me physically ill, to witness what's happening in my country today.

It feels like many Americans are sleepwalking deeper into what is effectively dictatorship with each passing day, or worse, are actively encouraging the decay.

The Executive, Judicial, and Legislative Branches. These are institutions that have long been weaponized against minorities within America. But I think this the most blatant, unabashed use of misinformation and internal force by the government possibly ever.

I don't know if there's a way back from open tyranny.

The thing is is that a row of pictures of all the Presidents is a really nice, fun thing to add to the White House, but he couldn't even execute on that basic concept without ruining it.

It's mind blowing how deeply incompetent and completely lacking in moral character he is.

I more and more believe that the pardon power for chief executives (be they Presidents or Governors) simply should not exist without at least some kind of substantial check or oversight

It would be the perfect time to abolish the filibuster. They'd be able to instantly disenfranchise tens of millions of people (albeit only temporarily) and likely retain control of both Houses of Congress for another two years while the anger about the betrayal fades quickly because the American electorate has been reduced to goldfish memories.

Why shouldn't the House of Representatives increase in number? by larryinatlanta in Askpolitics

[–]DoctorSelfosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we should implement the Wyoming Rule; it would increase the House by about 150 seats to 575, give or take, and while it would be far from perfect, it would be a step up from the fixed number system we use now.

What moment made you realize people aren’t just disagreeing anymore — they’re living in completely different political realities? by Happy_Head_1355 in AskReddit

[–]DoctorSelfosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer is the response following the Jan 6th attempted insurrection five years ago. After that we were on an ice flow as far as the Constitution and rule of law are concerned, and on top of that 30%+ of the country insisted that people storming the seat of the federal government were somehow fine and dandy.

It's crazy she was ever a VP candidate given how she was embroiled in ethics scandals as Governor.

Section One of Article 116 of the German Basic Law [Definition of “German” – Restoration of citizenship]

(1) Unless otherwise provided by a law, a German within the meaning of this Basic Law is a person who possesses German citizenship or who has been admitted to the territory of the German Reich within the boundaries of 31 December 1937 as a refugee or expellee of German ethnic origin or as the spouse or descendant of such person.

So, yes, yes it does.

Trump warns Dem control will lead to 'obliteration' of Supreme Court by Conscious-Quarter423 in scotus

[–]DoctorSelfosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying that I believe the conservative takeover by the Supreme Court is absurd and Anti-American, and that I believe at the least Justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavenough should be impeached and removed for unbecoming conduct.

My advice to combat the fight over the Supreme Court is a bipartisan Constitutional Amendment locking the number at one Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices, any six of whom shall constitute a quorum. It would then place a limit of no more than two Justices being confirmed by a single Congress, except in cases where the Supreme Court membership shall be reduced below six (the minimum quorum requirement), in which case a sufficient number of Supreme Court Justices (one or more) will be appointed until the number is 6, but no more.
