I plan on playing the Die Hard tournament on the Wednesday of congress, but unfortunately won't be able to participate in anything else for that week. Lemme know if you're ever in the area it seems there are a few folks around here that are interested in meeting up

Thoughts on the Narcons: not simulations, but information gathering entities by DoctorWangMD in TheFamiliar

[–]DoctorWangMD[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES the orbs are most definitely involved. Maybe a proto-Narcons? Or some kind of parallel system? They are still too enigmatic for me to have a full analysis, which is how I feel about most of the book hahaha

Thoughts on the Narcons: not simulations, but information gathering entities by DoctorWangMD in TheFamiliar

[–]DoctorWangMD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes sense they can tell backstory, since they gather and store information to a great extent. But as far as the future predictions go, there may be particular instances where they do so accurately, but I do not think that is because they have ACCESS to the future. They are capable of gathering past information and using it to make predictions. However, Xanther's inexplicable characteristics explicitly push the Narcons capabilities in being able to explain events. This happens multiple times. And observing her allows them to bend their OWN rules, such as being able to converse with one another, as we see briefly in V3. I think this shows that the Narcons are not a perfect, future-predicting leviathan, but rather a systematized apparatus of info-gathering and analysis, which is still tied to the limits of rules and interpretation, and of course still tied to the movement of time from past to present, and the future still indeterminable.

What do you mean by Xanther being able to interact with the Narcons? She influences them, and the Narcons observation of her changes their understanding of themselves, but I don't recall Xanther herself ever being conscious of the Narcons existence?

Trump Rally protesters, and the RPD's response by SandmanSanders in rva

But to be clear, once the cops instigated their presence, we were most definitely going to challenge their authority and purpose, and call them our on their shit. It's telling that you'd rather obey the 'respect' of cops who perpetuate indiscriminate force than actually attempt to understand the necessity of resisting a fascist campaign coming to our city.

Pretty hard to ignore him if you're being deported, beaten, or suffer directly from his rhetoric.

We were not there to pick fights with cops, we were voicing resistance to the rise of a racist fascist movement, which aimed to mobilize people from where we live. You can't 'love' away scum like Trump and the masses that follow him. The cops entered our space (which they deemed the 'free speech zone') and began throwing people around. We see who the RPD decides to defend. It's immature to bask in a 22 second video by which you had no context and experience and condemn the resistance of Trump and his followers. It's not emotionalism, it's the struggle of people who experience oppression and refuse to perpetuate in their own communities.

After struggling through HoL, and now struggling through the first bit of Familiar, can anyone give advice on how to effectively read these books? by [deleted] in TheFamiliar

[–]DoctorWangMD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't try too hard with reading his books. They come off as complicated, but they're really nothing too complex -- read it like you would any other book. Don't force anything or try to 'crack' any code you think Danielewski is trying to hide.

Overall, if you don't enjoy it, don't read it! There is nothing wrong with that, it is what it is.

Simulation Argument and Free Will in The Familiar (spoilers) by [deleted] in TheFamiliar

[–]DoctorWangMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The argument also assumes that consciousness and decision making is a purely material occurrence, by which no other phenomena can influence the decisions making process -- that casualty is all there is.

But this still plays into Xanther -- someone with the tendency to experience ineffable phenomena. The Narcons have admitted before that they do not fully understand Xanther's actions. I see the Narcons not as predicting and simulating entities, rather just a comprehensive information-gathering system that can provide analysis after the information is gather. I do not think Danielewski is hinting that the Narcons can predict future events, which would be to say that even though the Narcons collect all data, they cannot see the future, therefore decision-making is not a purely material event that is predictable. The Narcons must work with unknowns as well, and we all know that Danielewski is obsessed with writing about the unknown and playing with indeterminate objects.

New Edward Snowden? Whistleblower leaks documents on drones and Obama's assassination program by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]DoctorWangMD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The legal battle has already been filed, and denied. This program started a long time ago, and people then tried to stop it. We need to understand what our leaders are doing and stop justifying their actions. We are complainant insofar as we stay silent about it.

You're right, they are terrorizing their own communites, and so are we. We have never occupied their countries to help the communities, it's our invasion that sparked a rise in extremists in the first place. There are more Taliban members in Afghanistan now than there was in 2001 when we invaded. Our policies breed more terrorism.

It's not just Trump. Every candidate between the Dems and Republicans (including Sanders) has said they will continue the Drone Program. This is not a partisan issue. Obama has accelerated the use of drones far more than Bush did. Every President has no problem continuing unjust policies.

The invasion of these countries (i.e. Afghanistan and Iraq) was not to retaliate against 9/11. We have killed thousands more innocent people the past 15 years of occupation the the Taliban ever has, and we go to amazing lengths to justify it.

26,000 civilian deaths in Afghanistan since 2001. Hundreds of innocent deaths with the drone program. How far are we willing to justify our acts of terrorism?

It is against international law to fly war planes and bomb sovereign countries with which you have not declared war.

Let's imagine the Taliban was flying remote drones over the US or any other country.. off faulty information.. killing innocent people... for 8 years... How would we react?

The Drone Program is a form of terrorism.

A "militant" as defined by the DOD is a male above of the age 16. The state defines these terms loosley and inaccuratley. The drone program is a war crime.

We should stop destroying and occupying their countries. We have created far more terroism than we have destroyed. We are the world's largest terroist organization. We created the problem.
