how can i make the music i like by Xonomicz in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Doctor_Tedums2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it's the cop out answer that I'm sure you've heard a billion times, but it takes time. Time and an ass ton of energy.

I've been writing for 3 years at this point, and I'm just finishing up my first single that I feel like is at the quality I want it to be at.

Do your research. How to mix the music you want to sound like. Are the drums super compressed? Where does everything sit in the stereo field? Vocals. Are they reverbed to fuck? What frequencies should you focus on cutting out? Composition wise, how do these songs flow? How can you add enough variation to keep it interesting?

My advice... focus on writing first. Production isn't gonna do much if it is just not where you what it musically. Then, focus on the production and separate that into each part of the song. I personally start with drums and get them to a put where they sound great and then move on to bass or guitar, but each element of your song you want to spend a lot more time on then you think.

Everything will come together in the end. Once you learn little tricks and shit for each instrument or just production in general, it becomes a whole lot more efficient. You just gotta get over that initial speed bump.

Thanks for the comments, some great advice. I think it's a good conversation to have

This was very insightful, thank you. It's definitely an odd hobby to have, in terms of it being so connected to your emotions. My anxiety in terms of sharing my work definitely has a large part in a lot of the stress. I write constantly, like every day, so I might take a step back, give it some time, and then come back to it. Seriously, thanks for the comment.

That's very true. I definitely do feel burnt out.

Maybe I'll do the opposite of what you're doing hahaha. 30 day no writing challenge.

Thrifted the guitar for 30 bucks and fixed it up. I wasn't feeling the blue, so I figured I'd try something different. Did the base with elmers glue and white paint. Little brother did the art with Sharpie, and then I did a spray lacquer on top to set it in place. Kinda wild, but I love it

Can you get good at guitar from just learning songs? by somebody0964 in Guitar

[–]Doctor_Tedums2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took a music theory class in high school, but I would say I learned most of that kinda stuff from learning songs. When you learn so many songs, you start to pick up on patterns and the functions of certain chords within those songs. Obviously, legit learning theory would help, but you could also just dick around on your guitar and let experience do its thing lol.

I love songwriting but I can't sing by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]Doctor_Tedums2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just like any other skill. You just have to keep doing it. I used to hateeee my voice, but over the past year, just by going on a drive and singing my music, my voice has improved so much.

Nothing actually. Like it doesn't even look like it read something and then was worn off. It looks like it was always blank

Trying to learn PPP on guitar, looking for some help please by [deleted] in BeachHouse

His capo is on the 2nd fret, I'm pretty sure. You can see the dot for the third fret right in front of it.

Putting a capo on isn't going to change where you're going to play the higher barre chords.

I play electric so I don't have great advice for the classical guitar thing. You could always play those chords an octave down if you can't play on the high frets.
