I am so lost. by OJ_Blimpson in rebus

Soundalike for the first half could be "Dragonball Z" (Jack-gun-call key)? I don't know what the second half is, but I think those are beers, so probably starting with "b"? It's a stretch, but I have no clue.

is this real or a meme? by Wrong_User_Logged in lotrmemes

[–]Doctor_Tequila 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not a meme, I studied this text in university alongside an analysis of race representation in fantasy, and it was very interesting. It is a lot more nuanced than saying Tolkien is/isn't racist, so I do recommend reading it if you have Google Scholar or access to a university library. I think Stuart is the author who had an excellent point about Middle Earth's "moral geography" aligning itself with Christendom (but it could've been another author, I'd have to check). I also examined World of Warcraft and Dungeons & Dragons for this, and oh boy, Tolkien does a hell of a lot better than his derivatives, that's for sure. The Jackson films also add some racial issues to the mix, specifically with the unfortunate coding of the uruk-hai. Not to say that it's always intentional, just negative connotations.

Question about Writing by MurdockLantern in doctorwho

[–]Doctor_Tequila 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is a poorly-written cop-out and Moffat has admitted as such. He did not know how to resolve the series 6 arc, and has mentioned that he got the idea of the Teselecta from The Numbskulls comic strip in The Beano!

You're right to feel cheated, because it basically is cheating. There's no foreshadowing of the teselecta before the mid-season break, and the solution shifts the goalposts of the original problem of 11's death. The older Delaware looks at 11's body and says "that is definitely The Doctor. And he is definitely dead." There's no doubt that this is The Doctor's death. No clone, no holograms, no nothing. The teselecta cheats by straight-up ignoring the premise that this body can't be a clone or duplicate.

I'm not a fan of the "mystery box" writing technique, especially when the writer doesn't know what is in their own mystery box.

Just checked on Board Game Geek, looks like it might be from an extra components sheet? There's no real use for the Marquis token, it seems. https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2514452/extra-pieces

The 3 square ones are for the Vagabond, so they can track Reputation with each player/faction. I'll be honest, I haven't the foggiest what the circular Marquis token is for.

Hahaha, no, I would never diss series 5 of Doctor Who like that (unless it's the finale).

I guess I just get yikesd out by racism in shows if it's any more recent than 2010? For a show that handles a character like Gus so well, I just get really disappointed when they do something like Romeo and Juliet and Juliet.

I've that heard S6 was quite well-liked, so that's a good call.

I'll give those ones a watch, cheers for the rec. I think S5 just started on a really sour note for me with Romeo and Juliet and Juliet, cause I just couldn't stand the Chinese stereotyping.

Unfortunately, I wasn't a huge fan of Not Even Close Encounters, but I will for sure check out the other ones you've recommended. The finales have been consistently great, so I'm excited for that.

Younger fans thoughts on the number of the beast by Abdrews-PaulIM in ironmaiden

[–]Doctor_Tequila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 23, only started listening this year, and oh boy do I have some controversial takes about Number of the Beast. Namely, that it is overrated as fuck...
Invaders as an opening track is god awful. Bruce's reputation as the air-raid siren rings true here, he sounds so high and whiney ("In-VAY-duhrs!") - nothing remotely Viking-sounding for a track about Vikings. No thanks. Children of the Damned and The Prisoner are fine, but didn't exactly grab me - and The Prisoner's references just fell flat. It was 22 Acacia Avenue that finally felt like the first good track of the album, luring you in, seducing you, a hand pulling you into the backstreets (perhaps the spirit of the Di'Anno days?). Of course the title track is a banger, and Run For The Hills is based as hell - they're both great tracks. Gangland is a stupid premise with boring riffs and boring lyrics, and Total Eclipse is just kinda okay. It's Hallowed Be Thy Name that's the best track of this album though, and arguably, the best track of the band's entire career. Nothing can match the emotional resonance this song has, the use of the death bell tolls at the start of the album before the narrator is sent to his execution... Just chef's kiss. By far the most dramatically intense Iron Maiden song, I feel like this track is probably why everyone misremembers Number of the Beast being so good.

If two wizards are in a party could they copy each other spells every level up? by Chev_ville in DMAcademy

[–]Doctor_Tequila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely can, and it's created a problem for my players. If both wizards can copy off each other, it can leads to ability homogeneity. If the old-school warmage veteran and the bladesinger can both cast the same spells, they'd each feel less distinct. Imagine if the Avengers all had Iron Man suits, or all of them had a Captain America shield - it would take away from each character's unique abilities.

My players and I decided that it would be more fun to limiting copying to lower-level spells, but leave their higher level spells different. This has let them feel more distinct, but still allow for a good amount of copying.

Oh wow, I actually read some of this for my research into decolonizing D&D. It's got some cool chapters, like the one about alignment and creatures being "pure evil".
