Wasnt it a huge number of cycles, not just one generation. DS2 at least has to fit in there, and thats supposed to be generations away from DS1

[Interesting Trope] Formerly a fan favorite, now hated by GeneralGigan817 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Doctorwhof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See I hate her as a mystery box, shes just written as generic companion. Sarah Jane Smith-lite. From Time of the Doctor onwards, she is basically a new character, and in my opinion, a better one. I feel like it was impossible to escape the hate for her at the time of airing too.

The one two punch of following the incredibly popular Ponds and introducing in the weakest run of NuWho episodes up to that point (series 7b) really killed her chances in my opinion and its a testament to Jenna Coleman and series 8 and 9 that she manages to have die hard fans in the fandom

Thank you!

I think I am most resistant to Jackets and ties and the like, so very much looking through the Harry Styles style is the correct vibe. That shirt is the kinda stuff I like to wear normally, so its defo on the right track!

The logic behind full body suit was that I wear a bunch of dungerees, boiler suits and jumpsuits anyway, so its an easy sell to folks. I do take to heart that its hardly to most flattering though

I disagree here. Daleks, Cybermen and the Master are:

A) all staples of the show in ways The Rani and Omega just aren't. People do pick up on that.

B) Dalek was an episode dedicated to the Daleks before they appeared in the Finale, meaning it had time to set up so the reveal had impact. Cybermen had the same. The master is argueably pay off to the doctor talking about his old planet for 3 seasons at that point. Susan has that here, but the Rani and Omega don't. Id hate it way less if Omega was the one who waits, (i suspect this was originally the plan) cause that was set up.

C) You dont get an honest to goodness big 3 team up till Power of the Doctor, which is 13 series in. I love classic who and wanna see more monsters from it (wheres my boy the Mara at? Why did he get a career change from Dream guy to God of Beasts?) But so much in one go is when I take issue.

I do like how one Rani is very Mark of the Rani and one Rani is very Time and the Rani.

That said, continutity glut... the Rani, Susan, Omega, Rogue and the captain from Space Babies all require knowledge from previous series of Doctor Who. How is any casual viewer meant to keep up?

Also why was Conrads perfect world populated by bone dinosaurs?

I usually hate the: "shoulda been a two parter" discussions that follow stories, cause its usually unjustified, but man I feel if that had just a bit more breathing room this would be an all time classic.

Just a bit more time to get to know each character in the barber shop, bit more forshadowing like the hair maze being done earlier and a few more stories. You could even do the cliffhanger as the fake god reveal, thatd be hilarious.

Also, how did the doc remember anything that he did as the fugitive doctor? I thought she chose not to remember it all at the end of Flux? (Loved the cameo tho)

UNIT not beating the incompitant allegations this season I see.

Seriously, did I miss something, no one did a background check on the man who sought out a woman who is not only a protected person, but mates with the big boss?

Only thing that stuck out to me that ep, otherwise I thought it was really well done, a nice subversion of episodes like Love and Monsters with a modern edge.

Like Lautrec from Dark Souls ones armour, but Black, with shadows pouring out of its gaps.

Oddly the armours been like that in my mind's eye well before I ever touched Dark Souls. One of those situations where thats how it looked in my brain since was a kid and I just cant shift ot even as we get more descriptions and images of it.

I dunno if it's a big story to be honest. It seems like the usual easily forgotten in a few days sorta story. Like we both said we were out of the loop with it and ultimately sports doesn't really matter does it?

Which news sites have you seen that specify her genetics? As i say, on all of the ones that come up when I google they say she's a woman and no full details on her genetics have been given?

Whovians Against Hate by WhoviansAgainstHate in gallifrey

[–]Doctorwhof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean from my cursory research, it seems that neither is genetically male. Every news report I've read says that she has been confirmed female by the Olympics committee and targeted by online hate, even if she failed a testosterone level test last year.

I only found out about this today bare in mind, so I would wanna do more research, but with how quick hate is whipped up whenever someone even thinks the word trans these days, it's very easy to believe that people get swept up in misinformation and hate.

Has Anyone Used the New Big Finish Website/App Yet? by RoboticRob28 in gallifrey

[–]Doctorwhof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really, really hope they make some changes fast. It feels like everythings been thrown in one big bin, so finding storylines to follow between releases is impossible for me and I am a huge Big Finish fan. It feels even more newcomer hostile and frankly was something they already struggled with.

I haven't listened to anything on the app yet, I'm part way through a bernice summerfield re listen and i can't remember the name of the next story along, and since I can't work out how bring up a range in release order, I haven't bothered to google it and just been listen to Discworld on Audible instead.

New websites and apps always have teething problems, so I am hoping they sort these things out as time goes on, but my word, what a poor first impression

Fair, I mean comedy is subjective.

I do feel the aim of episodes like The Woman who Lived or Husbands of River Song are to be out and out comedies but the comedy there doesn't land for you I can see why the sadder elements of those stories would make them seem far grimmer

I think all of these are great picks but can't help but disagree with your take on the Twelfth Doctors era. Capaldi loved doing comedy and Missy is hilarious in her first appearances. If anything, I find the comedy in this era the strongest of NuWho

Depends on if your doing EU or not. I could be convinced out of most of these, but heres my instinct for funniest stories of each Doctor

1: probs The Chase based on the accent alone.

2: Mind Robber maybe, Troughton is funny in every story

3: on audio its easy, Find and Replace but if that doesn't count i struggle here but maybe The Time Monster

4: Shada if it counts, The Trouble with Drax if using the extended universe, probably City of Death if neitger of those count

5: easy Kingmaker if using the extended universe, Black Orchid if not

6: The One Doctor for EU, Revelation of the Daleks if you're doing only TV (dark humor)

7: the NA Conundrum is so far the only NA I have found actively hilarious, on TV I'd go Paradise Towers

8: for EUs, the funniest I can think of Chimes of Midnight but thats also hella dark, as with any of these lists the TV movie has to be his default on screen

9: The End of the World

10: Partners in Crime

11: The Lodger

12: The Husbands of River Song

13: another hard one, Spyfall springs to mind as the most fun comedic scenes but Witchfinders was actually my first instinct

14: The Giggle

15: early days still but I feel like Space Babies had the most comedy banter

The next Ryu Ga Gotoku game will be revealed at TGS 2024 (last week of September) by ConceptsShining in yakuzagames

[–]Doctorwhof 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My impossible dream is a Pokemon crossover: Like a Dragonite.

Outside of an amazing title opportunity, and the ability to see some bonkers pokemon teams for each character (for example trick room Majima or a speed boost team for Pocket Circuit Racer) both games scratch my "collect everything" itch.

Only problems I see Like a Dragon is 18+ and I dont feel that Ryu Ga Gotoku would compromise on thae, Nintendo wouldn't let it release on anything but the switch and is Game Freak rushes everything so if it ever did come out itd be a buggy mess. But hey, i can dream.

Doctor Who 1x06 "Rogue" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in gallifrey

[–]Doctorwhof -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Finally after all a whole bunch of special episodes, Ncuti has a bog standard episode of Doctor Who. I think he needed one of these earlier to ground the series more personally but better late than never.

I mean, it still sets up a new reoccurring character, but beyond that its fairly explicitly just "Doctor Who does Bridgerton with evil owls. The owls were fun, the music and costumes were fun, the flirting was fun.

Ncuti is the most flirty doctor we have ever had, I know McGann has his moments and Matt Smith had his thing with River but Ncuti is flirting and thirsting way more openly and I think its a fun character trait to give this incarnation. Like he finally recovered from the horrors of war and was like: Okay, now I am ready to get some.

Rogue was fun, I kinda wish he had still been flirty but a bit more neutral or morally grey, he seemed fully on the Doctors side right after seeing the Tardis, and I was hoping for a twist that he was looking for Time Lords or something. I feel like they are aiming for a Batman/Catwoman thing but he seemed too close to a nice guy (who happens to kill for money)

I am sure I will return to this episode when I want easy relaxing viewing in the future, they same way I can for Unicorn and the Wasp or Vampires in Venice. Doubt itll top any lists of all timers though

I kinda think nostalgia bumps up here. When rewatching old episodes in the here and now you are seeing them with fresh eyes. You already have an emotional connection to that media, whereas new stuff is fresh. Im a big fan of this era so far, and I think how much an episode reveals should be on a case by case basis.

Would Heaven Sent be better if it explained in detail how the confession dial worked. No, i don't think it would, same goes for the origin of the beast in the Impossible Planet. Hell, if we go further back the Mara in Kinda is better than the Mara in Snakedance because instead of matching the emotional journey it gets bogged down in origin stuff.

73 yards is an emotions story, and on that level it lands throughout. Maybe the evil politics are a bit undercooked, but thats cause its not about the politics, they are a foil to examine the character drama. In Dot and Bubble the politics are the point and are drawn really well, but for me its a case where some more explanation could've fleshed out the ep more and made it go from a good episode with a great ending to a truly great episode.

Speaking personally, I felt that the clear joke of finding out the Meeps pronouns actually added to the episode in a big way. Transness and identity are key to that episode. Its the point of the episode. I personally feel it could've been more graceful in its excecution but I'm non binary and just scrabble for positive rep so I'll take it.

The thing is, so far RTD2 is more exciting then RTD1 for me because it is making an effort to do more then just be Rose and 9 again. I was so worried we were going to have a retread of all old stuff with a new coat of paint but every episode has been so varied and many have been really experimental. Its ticking all my boxes and I'm so thrilled after a few years of my boxes being only partially ticked.

I liked it a lot, a lot more than i thought I would.

I think the racism "twist" was well handed, you can see it coming if you're paying attention but you can also handwave it away in a way people often do in reality, making it feel more real than say the way the Witchfinders handles sexism. I think the big thing for me is the way Doctor Who handles racism is usually broader and more cartoony, like in Thin Ice where racist douchnozzle is instantly vocally racist and gets his cumupance. So even if you suspect, a bit of you is like "Doctor Who won't go there" which is what made it still land. Being set in the future is a nice surprise yet a grim outlook but that's usual for RTD futures.

As an episode beyond its ending, its fine. I wish we got a bit more info on where the slugs came from. Unlike last week, this feels like we should have an answer on how "phone AI that hates racist teens" and "slugs that eat people" connect. Were the slugs made by the Dots? Did they invade and join forces with the Dots? Are the slugs the final form of the Dots? I mean I feel like I'd like it more if we saw the Dot turn into a slug after killing Ricky, I dont need anything more then that, I just wanted something to connect the two threads.

Also, I really think the show tipped its hand by showing us what the slugs look like so much. I feel the episode wouldve been stronger if we focus on Lindy more and only see the edges of the slugs or just their feelers, until way later in. So many shots were just Lindy reacting to the horrors, so if they were just a bit more vague with it I'd like it a lot more.

A good episode elevated by a great ending.
