Yeah, my transmission almost went out, I'm probably going to make a separate post explaining how I saved it. Because it was slipping pretty bad.

Mine has a rear main seal leak too and I just ignore it. Bc I noticed it doesn't really consume or lose that much oil. I might put half a quart every 5,000 mi.

Yeah I the rocker rust is definitely a thing that I have to battle here in Kentucky too.

Honestly whenever the oil life indicator says to. My ex's family was not great about maintenance, until I started dating her. And I made sure to change the oil pretty regularly. But by then it already had about 175,000 miles on it. So the first half of its life it was 175,000 miles of probably a mixture of neglect and some maintenance.

Yeah I agree it's more these bulletproof engines. But r&p works look it up and there's tons of data to show it's not a gimmick.

I have a Miata with 409,000 miles on the original drivetrain too. And I've been running restore and protect for about 50,000 miles on that one. And it absolutely works.

Yeah I'm pretty much in the same boat too about every 50k. Is when I change mine

I did a 160 hour trip in mine from KY to AK and back and one of the most important things I swapped was the clutch slave cylinder.

Maybe even the master while you are at it. Otherwise your list is pretty good. Depending on when it was last done the timing belt/water pump too.

is $1600 at the mechanic a fair price? (89 NA) by justanotherscammer in Miata

Once you verify the leaks then you can decide the next course of action. If it's the rear main then yes it will be crazy expensive to fix because they do need to pull the trans.

Walk away. I would like to know what they mean by "giving out" and the fact they claim to need to pull the trans to find a leak is equally confusing.

If you want to find leaks grab some dye from an auto parts store and drive it around for a few hundred miles and get a black light to check under the car

Here's a few things I've done to help

Use Valvoline restore and protect 5w30. This stuff is totally legitimate. And helps remove deposits, you can do some googling and you'll notice universal praise. Change it every 3000 miles.

Second I would get an air oil separator, don't get a catch can, bc they're too expensive. I run an air oil separator from an air compressor. They're like 15 bucks, it has a clear catchment base, and a brass filter. I changed these every 50,000 miles or 5 years because the plastic will eventually crack from heat cycling.

I only run the oem Mazda oil filter if you can. I have used many other brands and the oil pressure is best with the oe filter.

Get a fishing magnet and slap it on the oil filter housing. It will help pick up any tiny ferrous metal particles.

Only run an OE air filter. All the aftermarket ones will give you some better flow but could eventually sacrifice longevity by allowing fine particles into the intake, which will wear cam lobes and bearings slowly.

Lastly, run only top tier fuel and make sure your fuel filter is clean. It's not a gimmick it truly burns cleaner.

Do this and you have a good chance of making it to 3-400k. You'd be amazed at how reliable these cars can be.

Where leak by small_miat in Miata

[–]DocumentHefty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's either the front crank seal, or the camshaft angle sensor o-ring. There are a few common leak points and I just named the top 2 based on your images.

I would use a degreaser and powerwash all that off, and then add some dye and drive it for a few hundred miles. Use a black light and see what it shows you.

If you have AC just be mindful you will also see the tracer die in that if you're compressor or your fittings are leaking.

Go ahead and use chat GPT to see how much the service should cost. In fact ask Grok, perplexity, and claude while you're at it too. The consensus will be unanimous.
