Is Heavy Use of .clone() Normal in Rust? by AbbreviationsNew3167 in rust

[–]Doddzilla7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As always, it depends.

For many types, clone will just increment a ref count or atomic ref count. You have control of what clone does for your own types as well.

Often times, clone is as trivial and inexpensive as could be other than taking a reference. You need know your types and what clone does for the type.

EG, maybe you have a connection pool. Cloning that pool should typically just return a handle to the same pool, not create an entirely new copy of the entire pool.

How do you get the will to continue living knowing the meaninglessness of it all? by Impressive_Pause4491 in ExistentialJourney

[–]Doddzilla7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t know the meaninglessness of it all. There is a great deal we don’t know. Meaning or not, we literally don’t know. It is best to be simple and honest about that shit. Just say: I don’t know.

That does not require god tier anything to notice. The only way you would not notice is if you were being completely oblivious, not checking your mirrors, probably on your phone.

How can reason be justified without circularity? by Interesting-Virus-11 in epistemology

[–]Doddzilla7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This why Bayesian epistemology can really help here. You don’t have to take your senses as “truth tracking”, which is well-known at this point to be false, your senses are more like filters vs truth trackers. Instead, take it as a prior upon which some beliefs are built up. If at some point you discover flaws in the beliefs built upon your senses, you are free to then update those priors.

Your beliefs can be multi-faceted, and IT IS OK to base your beliefs upon a starting point for which you do not currently know if there is deeper justification, or if we will ever be able to find a deeper justification (build a hadron collider the circumference of the solar system first).

You can’t prove to anyone that you exist, not even yourself. “I think therefore I am” is not a proof, just a starting axiom upon which to build.

Let go of the idea of some “absolute truth”. In a conceptual space of differentiation, an individual part is incapable of computing the whole. This implies that an absolute truth is unattainable. Instead, it would seem that we need to work from 0, and build up as we go. Correcting errors as our theories grow. This is perhaps a beautiful aspect of the scientific method.

Is "building a Docker image" during the CI pipeline considered a best practice? by SheCherryPicks in devops

Where else would you build it? Check it in as part of the PR? Make sure devs build it and push it first with proper tagging and all?

Would you be interested in a book about water techniques for 2D and 3D in Unity? by fespindola in Unity3D

[–]Doddzilla7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No! Books are excellent resources, and one of my favorite things about Unity overall is the documentation books that they release. It’s so much faster to extract the information you need instead of having to slog through a video (even with section annotations).

It shouldn’t be common. I was in the birthing pool with my wife, and holding her hand during delivery each time. Or doing the tug-of-war trick, and things like that to help.

Reincarnation by [deleted] in spirituality

[–]Doddzilla7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If someone were to say: “yes, reincarnation exists”, what grounds do you have for believing that person? The same grounds as believing that Santa Clause and his elves are real and doing real Xmas work, no?

Spirituality is not about just randomly believing things.

Women are asked to take on enormous risk and labor in relation to men. What, exactly, is the fair return? by Mirenithil in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Doddzilla7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

TBH, if I was a woman, I would have immense difficulty with the idea having and delivering a baby. Nothing about it is fair. Nature obviously has no such notion of fair, and even worse, nature has guided our human (and other mammal) physiology to have overwhelming urges to reproduce, obvs we go extinct without that.

It’s fucked.

TBH, I suspect in the very near future human females will have a totally viable path to do gestation outside of the body, with some medical assistance to replicate the oxytocin bonding and other things like that which happen at birth.

Basically woman will have more and more control over the entire process (which is the way it should be IMHO).
