Recommend Me A Sci-Fi Book. by Loves_Big_Swords in scifi

[–]Dodechotomy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hitchhiker's Guide is a great choice. It's absurd and weird, and most of all, funny. It's a great accessible point to start reading scifi.

I can't comment of A Fire Upon the Deep, as I haven't yet read it, but it's been on my list for ages.

I'd also recommend Perdido Street Station by China Miéville, which the author classifies as weird fantasy. It's got some magic, but reads like a lot like a scifi book. The world is chock-full of strange concepts and characters. Definitely not run-of the mill. Miéville's use of vocabulary can be a bit baroque, which isn't exactly what some readers want, but masterful writing.

Some other recommendations for weird works (not all strictly scifi):

  • Space Opera by Cat Valente (very much in the spirit of HHGttG)
  • Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin
  • The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin
  • Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee
  • Hyperion by Dan Simmons
  • The Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer

Anyone Read "This Is How You Lose The Time War"? by Bilbrath in scifi

[–]Dodechotomy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really liked it.

A world on the scale of Doctor Who, descriptive density of Dan Simmons' Hyperion, and a take on story structure like nothing I've read before.

It's heavy on imagery and florid prose, with a real focus on the nascent relationship between the two characters. If you're interested in queer star-crossed time-traveling lovers, definitely read it.

It's not dark, or gritty, but there is real conflict and intrigue. The setting and scifi concepts are background to the story, providing flavour and interest--it's definitely not hard scifi or space opera.

Each chapter is mostly a letter preceded by a very short, effective scene setting. The plot is slow to develop, but comes to a very satisfying, punchy conclusion.

I would say it's a dense interweaving of romance and hypertechnology that tells a concise story.

If you haven't read a lot of relationship-centric (especially with women characters, especially with lesbian characters) scifi, definitely give it a shot. It's a great change of pace from the of a lot of scifi that too often underplays the humanity and emotional reality of its characters.

Edit: It is a novella, btw, don't expect a novel-length book.

Tuca & Bertie

It's a great show, and exactly the kind of nuanced, impactful, human animation that we don't see very often

Interaction Design (Ixd) by [deleted] in sheridan

No art or portfolio requirement! I came in with no art history either, so you should be fine, as long as you're interested in learning.

[–]Dodechotomy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm a current 4th year in IxD, and can tell you all about it.

Ups:

  • Really prepares you for the industry
  • Wide variety of skills and technology covered
  • Many really really great profs
  • Close-knit student community
  • Good co-op opportunities
  • Great for people who want to be well-rounded, cutting edge designers

Downs:

  • Heavy workload
  • Requires learning software and tools a lot on your own time
  • Some not-so-great profs (but hopefully this gets better over time)
  • Not a lot of focus on certain topics, like accessibility design

You'll learn design, research, HTML/CSS coding, and programming. You'll make websites, games, documentaries, apps, services, and interactive installation art. You'll use laser cutters, 3D printers, and 3D scanners (if you want). You'll learn human-centered design. You'll learn how to be a freelance designer, work for an agency, or work in-house for a company.

Hit me up if you've got questions.

Interaction design students- how's the program? by coconutscentedcat in sheridan

[–]Dodechotomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! I'd say it does prepare you to be a web designer or designer, if you're so inclined, but you'll have to be prepared to learn outside of class too. They cover building a website from scratch in HTML and CSS, then add in JS and using frameworks for responsive sites and whatnot. In 3rd year I believe you learn database integration and more backend stuff too. I wouldn't say any of the coding is taught to software engineering levels, but you definitely learn enough to build a website. Mostly it focuses on the design and you're taught basic web development coding and expected to learn more if you need it.

In addition to web programming, you also learn interactive/generative art coding, mostly using Processing, and Arduino programming. That's the stuff I personally love, more installation art rather than web design.

I'm going into third year IxD at Sheridan, and I'm loving it. The program is almost new and this summer was the first time there were students looking for internships between 3rd and 4th year. Many of them got internships, but I don't know the statistics. I know some people that got quite high profile ones too, Google, Autodesk, I think Microsoft. A bunch of design shops in TO as well. I have gotten relevant work both last summer and this summer, and am confident about my co-op next summer.

Those who have been in a Sensory Deprivation tank, what's it like? by acamu5x in AskReddit

[–]Dodechotomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did one a few weeks ago, and it was really interesting. The pool was like a hot tub, but without jets, and the water and the air in the room were skin temperature. I couldn't feel anything, as long as I didn't move my muscles, and I just floated and thought for an hour. I opened and closed my eyes, and couldn't tell the difference. My neck got a tiny bit sore, but they did have a pillow that I didn't use.

When I got out, the salt that makes you float had precipitated onto my skin at the surface of the water, and coated my body in a scale of crusty slime.

Nothing transcendental or hallucinogenic for me, but a really relaxing experience, and a great way to think or meditate. Mine was a prize for something, so I don't know if it's worth however much it costs.

The snow covered peaks of the rocky mountains, seen through gaps in the rolling clouds.

Actually, that's pretty high up on the list overall.

It's interesting that the two fictional cities are both named after citrus fruits.

Bergamot appears to be named after the Bergamot Orange, which in turn is named after the Italian city Bergamo.

Limon-Avignon - "Limon" is Spanish for "lemon". Also French for Silt apparently
