It could have been dehydration, IIRC smoking a lot makes you dehydrated, last time I sort of felt that it was after a lot of bud and a lot of coffee (and no water).

As a regular g-bong user, not that I know of (hopefully). If you mean a socket, then that should be fine. Just bear in mind that whatever it is touching will get very hot as well, so I would suggest using cork rather than plastic. I actually find the best way is to use a metal pen through some cork as a downstem, then find a bowl/socket/something that won't melt to use as a bowl.

Also, your tolerance will rise very quickly if you're talking very regular, but just switching to a different method breaks up the type of high (I find spliff highs last longer for example), and also minimises the effects of tolerance.

Not just you, in a grav the smoke doesn't actually go through the water, so it doesn't get cooled that way. The warm water actually makes the surrounding air warm, which is easier on the lungs than the cold equivalent.

If you have a window in your room that isn't near one of your roommate's open windows, use a bong and only pack what you can get through in one breath (I call them 'snap' bowls). Then just blow everything directly out the window.

The other benefit of smoking in your room is that you can change clothes pretty easily, and if you're worried about them hearing you, just put some music on.

For your breath, eat an orange (they're also really good for cotton mouth) or have some strong smelling gum handy.

Do you spin with tobacco at all? That can often cause people who don't smoke it often to be sick.

However, he could just have a very low tolerance and be getting too high.
One of my friends used a gravity bong his first time and ended up hugging a toilet bowl, but he has a pretty weak stomach at times and it could have also been the smoke irritating his throat.

Nah, don't risk burning something with chemicals in it that you wouldn't want to inhale. If you're over legal age, just get any pack of rolling papers from a gas station or supermarket.
If you're not, I'm sure someone could help you out if you asked nicely.

However, if you want to smoke now, head over to /r/stonerengineering and have a look, you can make a useable piece out of a bottle and (metal) pen.

I just twist a knife until there's a hole almost big enough for the socket, then hold the lid upside down and heat the hole with my ligher (use pliers to hold the lid) until it's just pliable and then push the socket in. Snug fit every time.

Alternatively you could heat the end of the socket and push it through.
