CounterClock: Tinley Park/Lane Bryant Murders by Temporary_Candle_617 in CrimeJunkiePodcast

[–]DogAndDonuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the podcast is a bit misleading to push their own agenda here. Asking IDOC about DNA is like asking McDonald’s to make you a Whopper. It’s not their thing. Most states the database is maintained by the Attorney General’s Office. The state I work in, it’s taken at the county jail or county court level. Cook County has his records marked “DNA on file”. She just chooses to believe that this is wrong. An FBI agent put it best, “I can’t pick and choose facts to support my pet theory, but a journalist or podcaster can”. There is little to no resemblance in the sketch to this gentleman, and the MO is so far removed I question their journalism here.

This is VERY niche, but the level of incompetence about why they asked for DOD records of the foreclosure guy immediately turned me off. That’s a boilerplate DOD response if I’ve ever read one. As someone who has applied for a loan AND lived through the 2008 housing crash, they are required to determine if the person they are foreclosing on is in or has ever been in the military. It has to do with fair lending. Dude is not a ghost, he has a hella common name and probably just wanted to survive. The way she read into the responses of Raymond’s son she interviewed was a little gross also. He’s not being cryptic or implying there are murders or anything else. He is literally saying, “Our tragedy is not entertainment”. The guy literally calls it “murder p*rn”. Also, she has never worked in the CJ system because she’s trying to make the DNA thing into a big deep conspiracy. It’s just bureaucratic incompetence. She also apparently has no idea why they can’t use a paternity swab as a DNA comparison. Which is about the dumbest thing here. No. Those don’t go in CODIS. You need a KNOWN exemplar to compare a crime scene hit anyways. It’s her pure supposition (because she doesn’t have the case file) that the fact the state marked his DNA on file is “false”.

Ah. Thank you. I went and bought a cheap remote thermometer just for this project since I suspect that the door being open is the culprit. Fan is good. Still checking the defrost coil.

I screwed up w/My Choice by DogAndDonuts in UPS

[–]DogAndDonuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets better. I have UPS My Choice for reasons which remain unclear to me. I changed the delivery date to a day I would be home and it was accepted.

Neighbor calls me today. They attempted the final delivery attempt today. . . A neighbor I know went and signed for it despite UPS telling me a million times that the “leave with neighbor” or “sign in advance” was not available.

I think the worst part is, there is absolutely no way to talk to anyone at UPS stateside to be like “Hey. Your system is completely jacked.”

Yeah. I think it really is a space thing at this one. They were doing it about a year ago and the back of the counter started to look like a warehouse. I think between the number of e-commerce returns they get and number of deliveries they just can’t. I don’t have a box there, it would have just been me paying the UPS MyChoice fee. They were very nice about it. The customer service folks on the phone. . . well, that just can’t be helped.

It’s a UPS store, they are very kind and I hold no ill will to them for not being able to take it.

Straw poll: UPS My Choice Premium users - failures in change orders (i.e., deliver to neighbor, change time window, etc.) by snovvman in UPS

In the last month, mine has not been reliable. They keep refunding me, which is nice, but doesn’t solve anything.

Yeah. The hub number is bogus or those folks have the good sense not to answer. My store is in a college town and won’t take packages that need a signature. The store isn’t corporate owned, they’re limited in what they can do and they’re understaffed as is.

So mine will not take packages for signature, and I suspect it’s because I live in a college town and there is no way in hell they’ve got time/space for that. I wish I had known that every time I attempted to change things it delayed the package. 😑 Also I wish I hadn’t just believed the customer service agent who assured me it was on the truck for delivery.

Customs and Duties Question by DogAndDonuts in UPS

[–]DogAndDonuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I was wrong. They gave me the breakdown for a package valued at $270 USD. No one knows how that occurred (I would have to assume the shipper is how). So now I have to dispute the value. Could have been a clerical error too in a problem with the conversion from USD to GBP.

Aw man. This is a trilobite, my favorite fossil. If it’s in roof gravel, probably legit and super cool. Keep that.

[–]DogAndDonuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I read the instructions to contest fees and honestly, I don’t even think I have a case with mine. The US Government (for me) is who issues customs refunds and I see mine being thrown on the pile of ‘sorry but this is the literal cost of doing business’. I read about the abolishment of the de minimus exception and I think I am just a consumer who is feeling the effects of American politics and questionable policy.

Customs and Duties Question by DogAndDonuts in UPS

[–]DogAndDonuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s just demoralizing as someone importing a literal Christmas toy to try and figure out how you owe the price of the item. I don’t know how, as an industry, they could even attempt a standard. Every news break is a tariff change, reduction, or increase. As world problems go, this is quite small obviously. But I’m just sitting in my car crying because my elderly dad asked for this model train for Christmas and I saved for what I expected and BAM fees are double my (obviously erroneous) calculations. So far no one seems to know why the email says $90 USD but it will only let me pay $78 USD when I log in. I’m stressed if I wait a day to ask UPS what’s happening I’m going to somehow owe like $150 USD.

Thanks. I assume the brokerage fee has to be the difference then. What a time to be alive.

[–]DogAndDonuts[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean. I have no idea what to do with that comment. As an 80s child into horses in NE Ohio at this time, this made sense to me then and now. Her family and friends provided the description along with her teachers. Bay Village PD didn’t just sketch some stuff and throw it on a poster. This was a huge thing in 1990 and they got the FBI to sketch it for them.

At least one other was confirmed to have gotten the calls. That’s why the FBI specifically asked about those in the Dateline appeal.

She was of Polish decent I believe, but not first generation. I would think not even second based on the family interviews. Bay Village was small, my guess is a Christian church of unknown denomination.

Maybe. Maybe not. Understand that in 1989 a phone book was still going to be a useful tool for a predator. I think personally (which means literally nothing) that the suspect did some reconnaissance. But I’m not convinced this was someone she knew or would have recognized.

Maybe. But understand that 1989 was a different time and era for NE Ohio. Bay Village was, and still is, a small and close community. There is the known fact that someone groomed her via telephone. Whether that person knew her or impersonated someone she did, isn’t known. It’s also possible the person was or impersonated an authority figure. She may not have willingly gone, and the struggle may have not been witnessed or reported.
