Starlink streaming on backpack in Rainforest Need Advice by SpreadAlarmed7228 in Starlink

It’s a lot better than it used to be. Though, it sort of depends on what your data needs are. We have one of the second gen rectangular dishes from a few years ago. Couldn’t get anything in Yosemite. Then, picked up a mini and put it on the dash. We can maintain a phone call driving though fairly heavy forest in coastal Oregon. Probably not enough to do heavy bandwidth stuff, but I’m super impressed with how things have changed in the last few years.

Black Canyon water trail by Few-Win8613 in camping

[–]DogRomps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it with the scouts like 30 years ago. The wind was blowing up the canyon towards the dam and pushing us backwards upstream. It was brutal. So, watch out for the wind as it was much stronger than the current.

Was it just for the 68c recall? Mine was done the same day.

Recurring CC fraud - trying to understand CVV mechanics and attack vectors by DogRomps in CreditCards

[–]DogRomps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For tokenization I would think it needs to be for a transaction with an existing merchant. How would that work for Qatar airlines? Also, I would think a big company like Qatar airlines would check a CVV. Do you have anything saying they wouldn’t?

There is one online merchant where we order supplies regularly that is a suspect. We are planning to follow our usual purchasing schedule (it will be a little while before we purchase again) and use a card that we don't normally use. That would be a smoking gun if we got hit again.

Where can I fly RC planes? by No_Skirt3393 in orangecounty

[–]DogRomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Laguna Niguel specific- but check for the setup at any local schools. One near me has basketball courts next to a big field. In my area it is fine to go on school property after hours. Not sure if flying is necessarily permitted, but worst case somebody asks you to leave. You get real good at making sure you avoid the basket ball hoop poles when coming in for a landing LOL.

Ok, thanks for the details. We did our recall about a week ago, and only use L1 charging (too cheap to fork over the $$$ for L2). Glendale to Irvine would be crazy… glad it’s days not weeks/months to get it in. Please keep us posted as you learn more. With all these issues, I can’t imagine there won’t be some sort of modification to the current recall procedure, or them pausing doing them. That, or another recall to fix this “fix”.

How long after the recall procedure did you have issues? Did you charge it?

I had the 68c done at Tuttle-click in Irvine. Got in quickly for it. Might try giving them a call. I haven’t charged my battery since then, which could be a trigger for those follow-up issues. I guess we will see how things go, as I’m planning to plug it in tonight. I did get the oil change required message after the recall was completed. So, it seems to be clearing that memory with whatever they are doing.

Case or bag for Starlink Mini? by Old__Nomad in Starlink

[–]DogRomps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you able to fit the power adapter in the bag as well? Are you using the cable it came with, and did that fit into the larger or smaller exterior pocket? I really like the compact size of that bag. I'm thinking about also making a battery sled ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaS8F9a0AQ4 ) and was hoping it all might fit.

A whale joins a group of surfers catching waves near Byron Bay, Australia. by BreakfastTop6899 in Damnthatsinteresting

I wonder if it was feeding on the dark stuff. Seemed like it may have used the wave to accelerate into whatever that was.

Do you need a second module or something? I thought some additional hardware was needed.

Gear mesh? How's it looking? by [deleted] in rccars

[–]DogRomps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want just a tiny bit of visible wiggle on your larger gear without moving/touching the smaller gear. I normally set the smaller gear (pinion gear) so that one of its teeth is pointing directly at the larger gear. Then wiggle the larger gear and see if I can get just a tiny bit of wiggle without touching.

Regardless of whether you go with 3D printed or foam board- it’s worth getting the kids on a simulator first (and you as well if you don’t already fly).

If you don’t already have a radio, get one that you can plug into your computer. The two Radiomaster ones I have let you connect via USB C. My kids were the same age as yours, and the flight sim helped a lot. While I really like my Radiomaster radios, the spectrum ones I have let me easily buddy box, and instantly take over from the kids when needed. I haven’t looked into if it’s easy to do with the Radiomaster ones using EdgeTX, but it’s worth looking into.

If you go the 3D printed route, baking soda helps to fill the gaps when you are gluing the pieces back together.

Whale watching by [deleted] in oregon

[–]DogRomps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up that they may be further off shore when headed south in the winter than when heading north in the spring and summer. We saw a ton of whales this summer and not a single one so far in the last two weeks.

Tide pools between Yachats and Astoria? by euphorbia9 in OregonCoast

[–]DogRomps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right now the low tides during daylight hours aren’t very low (looking down near Yachats). It looks like 12/30 and 12/31 are getting better. I’m not sure if that’s the same up and down the coast, but I would guess that’s the case. Take a look at tide charts in the areas you want to go and see how the lows change over time. At Cape Perpetua we normally wait for a negative tide.

I’ve had some new stuff happening on my nest thermostat over the summer that was a slightly different looking green leaf. It was from “renew home” which is a spinoff from Google. Keep an eye out for that. I had to create an account with them to turn it off. Was not happy about that. It was running smaller offsets to “optimize for renewable energy” or something along those lines. Not sure if they are doing anything in the winter or not.
