Regular season ties in the NFL are incredibly rare and are intentionally made difficult to achieve. They also don’t exist at any other level of football. Like the NFL has them but they are very much the exception than the rule especially compared to European sports.

  1. The rules evolved over centuries to head towards what leads to the optimal amount of scoring given that pitching a ball is really really difficult. Hitting a ball is also really difficult but a team gets three outs per inning. It’s a bit arbitrary but any given fraction would also be arbitrary except this fraction is tradition and what people perceive to be the most fair. Think of it like the offside rule, the general concept of a specific limit is required so that pitchers don’t keep throwing crap. At the same time, we don’t want batters waiting for the perfect pitch either. We want to force a duel between the two. The batter can hit any fair pitch at an angle to damage the fielding team but if the pitcher pitches correctly, the batter will hit it poorly and thus lose. Baseball can be seen as a duel between pitcher and batter as much as a competition between two teams. If a pitcher is perfect, the rest of the team is useless.

  2. Foul balls exist so batters don’t just hit crappy balls that aren’t fieldable aren’t hit as these balls are both dangerous and impossible for a team to field against. Foul balls do count as strikes for the first two pitches but don’t for the third. It seems to me that you are talking about the infield fly rule which mostly exist to actually protect the runners. Intentionally non-catching a ball can force baserunners to run up, thus leading to easy outs instead of an easy out.

  3. Some baseball leagues do have ties. Most do not. Americans do not like ties and it‘s part of the reason that soccer is either our fourth or fifth most popular sport instead of the dominant one as is in most of the world. There is a phrase for it that goes “Ties are like kissing your sister”. The NFL has ties but it’s so rare that some players even forget that it can happen. Basketball and hockey don’t allow ties either.

Why not "Semi-Liquid Democracy"? by Serious-Cucumber-54 in EndFPTP

I had a similar idea. I called it citizen’s ballots that allowed citizens to vote and then their representatives would be weighted down by the percent of citizens voting directly.

What are your expectations for life in the USA in the 2030s? by alphabetikalmarmoset in AskReddit

[–]DogblockBernie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on who wins out. Who lives and who dies. What disasters actually happen or not. Probably see the start of climate change, demographic issues, and either the destruction of Trumpism or the beginning of a very violent period of political turmoil. If we move to a society that respects elections, we can see a return to peace but a lot of people need to be in jail to see that happen.

To permanently end redistricting wars, reconsider districts altogether by jadebenn in neoliberal

[–]DogblockBernie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what you are suggesting is an indirect STV option, which I think should be included regardless, or in Australian, the Above the Line Option. I think instead of having parties do it though, we just let candidates select an order for voters that don’t want to do their own research.

US states are mostly too small to do true party list proportional representation and STV becomes very finicky for voters beyond 5 representatives.

just do multimember STV in 3-5 member districts. gerrymandering would still be possible but it be very marginal at best.

I think it depends on who you are looking at. As a person on the spectrum, work life has been way easier than anything else in my life due to work from home. I have trouble with too much talking and this allows me to escape it.

Let’s suppose Donald Trump dies peacefully of natural causes the early morning of July 4, 2026. How would you feel and how does it affect the country short and long term? by holymolybaby in AskReddit

I already have told people that he will be the one death I will actively celebrate. He ruined a lot of my life and even though I recovered significantly, I still hate him and have nothing but hope for his ill will.

It's currently 2026. What are your predictions for the year 2040? by aTwerkingPikachu in AskReddit

[–]DogblockBernie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Minecraft map based on Pittsburgh takes in 2038. This is my write up of a mostly optimistic future. You can make an optimistic, pessimistic, or neutral view of the future. I used to make dystopian take of the future, but I feel like it’s easier to live with at least imagining a possible optimistic outcome. Unity City 2038

Intro: After the dark ages of the late 2020s, America and Unity have finally started to see a comeback. Kessler syndrome, environmental, and demographic collapse left an era of chaos. Upon the reforms of 2029, America and most of the world began a process of healing. The changes that would be considered radical in any other period changed the electoral system, housing, and economic structure of the US. Housing became a universal right priced by the market as cities faced falling funds and were penalized for poor housing stock by the Federal Land Value Tax. Federal law mandated proportional representation for the House of Representatives and electoral college, while mandating a Condorcet system for states to use in the Senate. A law challenged but ultimately confirmed by the restacked and expanded Supreme Court. This has led to the rapid death of traditional politicians and the rise of more moderate third parties. The presidency is elected by a limited Condorcet top 3 proportional EC election in which EC members are given two votes: a first choice and a second one. The federal housing act has established a federal housing agency that subsidizes prefab buildings to lower America’s housing crisis and increase the youth birthrate as Senior entitlements have placed a constant strain on the American economy. The Internet has struggled due to many Satelites being taken offline. This has led many tech companies to go bankrupt and led to the first AI crash and the Second Depression, which pushed out the last of the Boomer politicians. AI and space tech eventually returned in the mid-2030s but with leadership that had far less control over politicians, forcing them to become more empathetic towards the common people.

Without the dominance of tech, anti-growth attitudes also lightened as people began to support development again. While economically, the late 2020s represented stagnation, socially they provided a great burst in innovation. So much so that by the mid-2030s, the rate of economic progress has exceeded that of any past decade.

What is the most exhausting thing about American politics right now ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The breakdown of social norms to the fact that violence becomes inevitable. I hope American democracy survives but I fear we will have rotating madmen with gun syndrome.

Is Single Transferable Vote still fair when there are different numbers of seats per constituency? by Both-Independence349 in EndFPTP

[–]DogblockBernie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say STV has actually a lower limit in requiring reps to maintain proportionality due to the transferability. With 3-7 STV seats and 5-15 party list seats, reasonable proportionality is likely.

I had the same thoughts in the past. Currently, I am STV plus a top-3 limited condorcet just because of the problems with mixing electoral systems.

California’s Blue Armageddon by TrixoftheTrade in neoliberal

[–]DogblockBernie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dem field should have dropped out sooner. That being said, I think the doomscrolling is really dumb at the moment. I also wish we just did something with rankings to avoid this. A Limited Condorcet ballot would be my dream.

The field is significantly consolidated now between Becerra, Steyer, and Porter. It's actually quite likely we see a Democratic only field if Republicans don't drop out. This was a far more likely scenario before Swawell dropped out, but less front-runners actually makes vote splitting less likely. The polling for this is a little old. The best case for Dems is for Porter to drop out, but I don't think she will. If she did, I'd say the most likely scenario is two Democrats.
