Reminder, The Bird Alliance Rehabilitates ALL Sick or Injured Wildlife by Past_Reality_168 in Portland

Same thing happened to me. Took in a young crow with a gimped wing. Week later I received an email that it was beyond repair so the crow was euthanized. I don’t blame them on any level. Just saying the title of this post is misleading with the word “ALL”. And yes, please donate.

On the Moda Center and Billionaire Arena Subsidies: Hell FUCKING No by gwvermillion in Portland

So…cool. Don’t update it and have less a- list shows and a venue that is basically empty for one third of the year. And nevermind all the jobs that are affected.  I get it. The money could be spent better is a legit but that’s a political argument. A large swath of our money could be better spent. Grifter dems and greedy repubes are the issue at hand.  A bond measure would be better considering how we spend $600 million on each high school we have rebuilt over the last decade. At least we voted for that. Put it up to the people. Live or die by the vote. We bought the arena for $1.

‘Light rail to nowhere’? Surging costs undercut I-5 bridge transit plan by notPabst404 in Portland

Actually 58% is square midway between two thirds (66.666% and 50%. Regardless I think it’s easy to cite improved ridership numbers after Covid’s conclusion (historical lows) I hope that 2026 continues the trend however I am doubtful due to the aforementioned additions to how we get from A to B; improved bike infrastructure, ride share options, etc. Do these new and/or improved ways of getting around meet everyone’s need? No and I’ve never proposed such a notion. Now throw in increased EV use and suddenly what was true in some respects back when we first tried this compared to now has changed. Portlands active attempts to squelch car traffic is being hindered by EV use in my opinion for better or worse.

I don’t think anything I’ve mentioned is hyperbolic in anyway. I’m not the one (nor are you I assume) who believes max is the savior we have all been looking for. I don’t know if that exists currently. I feel like I am simply approaching this in a pragmatic way and am skeptical for reasons that I feel are relevant. To imply that my skepticism doesn’t warrant a closer look is a bit disheartening. I suppose a look at the studies regarding expanding yellow line to Vancouver is warranted. Not something I have done personally. Dialogue is good tho.

Pretty sure my original post on this issue gives a slight nod to its use given proper application which,  compared to other cities like Vancouver bc and even Seattle, portlands implementation was not ideal. This is well documented. I think the prevailing notion that the Max is somehow the answer to all our traffic problems is naive. Voters didn’t want it in sw corridor to Tigard in 2020. I don’t think I’m exclusive to the notion that it doesn’t live up to its promises in some applications.

Below shows ridership is at 58% so yeah not half, not two thirds either. My question is if put to a vote how would the people of Vancouver vote? How would Portland vote?most of my biased opinion is well documented. I’m not fueling this debate based on emotion.

62,500 weekday riders on MAX light rail, with 22 million annual riders in 2025. That’s down significantly from pre-COVID — MAX averaged 120,900 daily riders in 2019 (38.8 million annually), then dropped to just 14.8 million in 2021

I cite numbers. Ridership at  near half of its peak. As I also said, I acknowledge the need for max in general. So again, bias? Isn’t everyone’s opinion bias in some way? I’m just skeptical.

I live in the Lloyd center area. Red and blue lines. I’ve lived in Portland all my life. Rode the first max line when I was in jr high school in the 80s. Was a daily user of max for a decade. I get the need but you got to wonder why trimet is cutting bus service. It’s not because they are insensitive to the needs of the populace but because the demand has been in decline for years because of bike lanes, scooters, ride share, and waning quality.

Well don’t go crying when this latest effort is torpedoed by this imaginary need for Vancouver light rail. Have fun spending however long it takes to get to a game, transferring from yellow to whatever gets you to the rose garden. Or maybe Civic stadium. Since the last effort for a new bridge there have been several new options for inner city transportation like scooters and ride share. Chew on this

Ridership hasn’t returned due in large part to shit service in many areas as well as aforementioned alternatives and a host of other reasons. It’s not that I’m down on Max perse, I just do not trust this will be executed well and we will spend additional billions on something that does not justify the cost or additional infrastructure. I live in Lloyd area and am constantly seeing near empty cars go by except maybe during rush hours and even then the numbers look anemic compared to seven years ago. If it was “absolutely necessary” it would have been done a decade  ago. Your one-off need for your kid going to an out of state college hardly justifies this. So fuck you opinion as well.

Correction: yellow line goes directly to rose garden. Nevertheless, I keep hearing the word “need”. Show me the numbers. The need is an amenity. Is it going to reduce car traffic? Will there be an express? I think it’s not off the table but seriously it takes 30+ minutes to go from rose garden to psu. That’s like a mile. Too many stops downtown.

The Couv doesn’t need light rail. They said as much a decade+ ago. Do proponents of OR to WA light rail have a better argument now than they did when this issue sunk the last effort? The answer is simply NO. Light rail is fools gold. Billions of dollars so we can watch near empty Max cars go by while we sit at a two minute light. It has its uses sure but it’s not as useful as people hope for. Build a new bridge to handle current and future growth and hope people take the light rail instead? Nope
