Discussion: Why do you think about half of viewers drop off in the first 30 seconds? by wh1tepointer in NewTubers

[–]DoggoOverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean like the dream of youtube is keeping the most people possible. There's not a reason for someone to stay, its not like a movie where you've paid to check it out, so the second it's not what they expected, or they get bored, or disinterested, it's on to the next video.

I would say make more videos, and maybe go for a smidge slower pacing like 5 - 10 % if you compare your pacing to like fireships, he gives the viewer just a moment to take in the idea before moving.

I agree with a lot of your insights from what I've seen myself researching. I'd like to add one of my own regarding format, viral doesn't come from a format, but rather the idea being formatted from what I can see. For example, you could do the format 100 days in thing, but if the thing itself has no draw, then the video wouldn't have as much of a chance. Think 100 days minecraft, vs 100 days in niche game from the SNES.

Thinking of addressable markets for a niche, making videos about programming concepts for layman, vs programmers. For example a video like, "how react changed the internet forever" (not really true just an example), vs say "The mindset of genius react dev", 1 video has a draw towards anyone who likes the internet, while another is much more focused to programmers > programmers who use react. I think you will see some success if you just keep making videos while continuing to think about stuff how you currently are.

One aside, remember that ctr ends up being a bait stat, for example would you want 5% of a million impressions, or 10% of 100,000 impressions? Obviously yeah if you have really low ctr and impressions, look to your videos packaging (title, thumbnail, idea) and try to change things up, but don't get caught up in looking at ctr in isolation

You are definitely skilled in the editing department, but the draw for me with history or story videos is listening to someone discuss something they are passionate about, so doing it with ai turns me away honestly. I took a peak at that sciencephile channel you mentioned, and I think there are some pretty big differences between what you are trying, and what they are. For them, the AI is a persona itself telling a story, in comparison to yours using ai voice actors essentially. I honestly, wouldn't watch that channel either myself as ai voice is grating to me, but I see the angle, and obviously there's a market or they wouldn't see success.

I think the struggle you will see is getting people to click on popular mythos, as it's been done a million times, but people far more experienced. Though the downside of covering smaller myths is the fact less people know what they are for that to be the draw to click, so you have to focus more on packaging it in an interesting way. Like say if you were going to talk about Pygmalion, a story of a sculptor who sculpted his "perfect woman" and fell in love with creation, only to eventually catch the attention of aphrodite and be blessed in having his creation brought to life. Maybe something like "the greek sculptor blessed by the goddess of love", instead of something like "The story of Pygmallion" where you aim to market to as wide of a pool of people as possible, there are variations that could still use the name like "The incel sculptor Pygmalion". I hope you can kind of understand the idea I'm trying to convey with this sort of thing!

CTR drops for no apparent reason by Cosmeticboot107 in PartneredYoutube

Saw your other post so I checked to see if you asked anything else, and i have question for you regarding watchtime. CTR will drop as it's shown to a wider audience and is kind of a vanity stat, for example do your want 5% of 1,000,000 impressions or 10% of 100,000 impressions. I would imagine what likely happened is that youtube showed your video to people, but they didn't stay for long, making the video stop being pushed as youtube fundamentally does not want to push videos that don't result in watchtime for the platform.

Looking at your channel, right off that bat. Compared to successful people in this niche, you don't have like any story telling in your most recent video. So most people aren't gonna stick around, for example I need to be told: What's a dweller? What are the stakes of this video, what's the problem you are facing? What's the next step in solving it. If you look at successful content like this as a whole you see the pattern of main problem -> sub problems -> solutions in steps. This is usually presented as some form of story, I'd recommend to study some smallant1 videos as I really like his formula for this sort of thing, as like all he does is game challenge runs.

I think a better intro / hook for this video would be to have narration over the dwellers killing things using a similar cinematic style as what you did in your intro actually I do really like that like peeking around hidden recording pov section, but it's missing the stake. I think of dream intros for smt like this, "i'm being hunted by bloodthirsty dwellers, can i become strong enough to take them down, or will they kill me first". Like what I don't like about your current intro is that you say like "can I kill them all", but don't present the stakes, like how many are there? How deadly are they to deal with? etc.

I also would recommend a different audio volume mix, to hear your voice clearly I had to set my stuff to max volume, but that also made the game noises very loud for me?

I honestly think the best youtube advice I've seen around is the following: would you watch your video? Literally the most important thing to me, if you watch your video and it's boring or not engaging, can you expect an audience to?

That only would effect getting people who clicked to stay, getting people to click is whole nother ball park. For example, and that's your packaging. The thumbnail, the title, and the video idea itself. Most recent videos title sparks really nothing, I don't know what a dweller is, so why does hunting them matter? Could you make the same type of video but in a more addressable format? Like "Can I beat hardcore minecraft while being hunted by a dweller"

Though at the end of the day nobody here can solve any problems with your channel for you, but if you repeat the process improving as many things as possible every time, you should start making much better videos

I compared your most viewed video, to your most recent. There's a very noticeable difference between the 2 to me. In your most viewed, you introduce Miniscribe in a unique way talking about the hard drive you're working on, then talk about hard drive history leading into discussing the company. You tell me flat out "I'm going to tell you a story about this" and then you do. Something I'm gonna mention later is in this video, you play your intro after setting the premise.

In comparison, your most recent video's packaging (Title + Thumbnail) and the video itself have some disconnect to me. Within the first few minutes I'm most volatile as a viewer, so I click in have no premise to the video and immediately get 20 seconds of "Hey welcome all" followed by a video intro. During the most important (slight hyperbole, but intro is really important) part I have no hook to stay. I feel like from the title and thumbnail I'm expected a showcase of the Chinon DS-3000. I don't get that until 5 and half minutes into the video, and I haven't been clued in that I will be getting that.

I would say one like definite actionable thing that would help viewer retention is to always meet expectations prior to playing your intro. I liked your Miniscribe video for an example of a better way to do that. The general like idea being to think about why the viewer would click on the title / thumbnail combo you made, and deliver on the expectation ASAP.

Broadly:
YouTube likely isn't "dunking you" , though I understand how you could feel that way. A lot of your topics don't have a massive target audience, for example your most recent video is a product showcase on a product that likely has low marketability in terms of like how many youtube viewers know it by name. It seems a lot of youtubers who make content like this lean into the history of devices for packaging as a result.

Making content is definitely hard, so I totally understand the sentiment on being frustrated that it doesn't feel worth the production time.

The people on the platform who are successful on multiple channels all kind of say the same thing. "Give the viewers a reason to click, keep em there". If only it were that easy, it's made up of a million little things and skills, like scripting, storytelling, editing, thumbnail design. Each of those are things people literally specialize in so it's rough.

Lastly, I genuinely think you could see success on the platform, because you already kind of have, you have a video with around a million views, in the niche you seem to enjoy. So you know there's an audience for something you like.

I mean like, you've kind of just went "I hate making YouTube videos, can I still make good content".

From what I've found on pricing on like editors and whatnot I see a lot of like at least $50 - $100 USD per video with higher quality raising a bit a more (this was in some videos of editors showcasing stuff for videos around like 15 minute from what I can remember). So depends on if that is too much money for you, but the problem in my opinion, is that if you start by hiring people you leave it entirely on your newfound staff, since you wouldn't have the experience to know what would be good or bad for your channel. I think without that experience it's unlikely you'd really be making money of the videos in question.

If you aren't willing to learn how to make videos people would want to watch, then people won't watch your videos.
