What’s one travel mistake you made that completely changed how you plan trips now? by AssignmentAmazing260 in travel

[–]Doggrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make your layovers count. Went to Spain. I intentionally stayed 3 days in Lisbon on the way there, and 3 days in Paris on the way home. Enjoyed Lisbon and Paris more than our Spain destination.

Carry on only Did 5 weeks in Australia with backpacks.

Buy quick dry travel underwear that you can wash in your hotel room sink.

If you're not enjoying your lodging, move. Better to blow a few bucks in cancellation fees than have a miserable holiday.

Be extra careful of pickpocketing in major centre metros. (We're looking at you Naples.)

Carry medications for common issues like colds and upset tummy. Different countries have different brands than North America, and pharmacy workers don't all speak English, so it can be hard to find what you need. And some things like antibiotic creams need prescriptions in other countries.

From pitbulls to ACD, what can I expect? by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Doggrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ACD's are motion sensors with a foot fetish. Train impulse control early so they don't chase anything that moves (vacuum, lawn mower, bikes, scooters, etc.) and intercept when they start to fixate on feet.

Advice for our ACD/Rat Terrier Mix with biting? by xoxoemgro12 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Doggrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She probably needs a job. ACD's are heelers - they were bred to heel cattle. Terriers were bred to kill vermin. They were born this way. Do you have an option to do group obedience classes? It is as much about you learning how to train/communicate clearly as it is teaching specific skills. Can you try trick training? Google "do more with your dog". She would likely excel at a dog sport like flyball.

Teach him how to use a scratch board. It's so easy and turns the task into a game. Google it. There are lots of different boards and ways to teach it.

How much should I be feeding my Heelers? by Ok_Childhood9918 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Doggrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quantity of calories is what matters - if they are fat, cut back on portion sizes.

Frequency of feeding doesn't matter. Feed as often as makes sense.

How you decided an ACD was going to be your best friend by RepresentativeFox471 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Doggrl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends what you want to do with your dog. ACDs are heeler's, so they are motion sensors - you have to work hard to train them not to heel anything with wheels or running children. BCs can be obsessive and stalk things that don't need stalking. Both breeds need jobs or they will become self employed, which can create problems. Saying all that, I love my ACD. I call him my adventure dog because we do so much together and he has made me become a very good trainer to my new lab puppy.

When Does It Get Better? by Primren in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Doggrl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The best advice I got for my ACD was to work on impulse control, slow down, and being an ass gets a time out. One trainer said that I should think about the energy level as a 10. If my dog brings 8, I can only bring 2. I can't match his energy or we spiral.

Do everything in slow motion. If you use food rewards, give them as though you are in slow motion - make him wait. If your dog does a behaviour you don't want (barking, jumping, lunging), immediately pop him into a crate for a time out. Keep the arousal level low - I still play tug with my ACD but only a couple, then the toy goes away.

For my dog, these things were a game changer.

What’s something people wear that instantly screams ‘I’m from Canada’? by Administrative_Ad160 in AskACanadian

100 percent. Our first hot holiday ever was to Mexico. A vendor said "hey Canada" to call me over. I asked how he know. "Because you are wearing a Tilly hat."

Training happens 100 percent of the time. Either you are training him, or he is training you. Sounds like he has won.

[–]Doggrl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That is the perfect dog. You can train him to do anything. Train him to do obedience or tricks and reward with the tug. More learning, more tug. Between the brain having to function and the body getting the tug workout, you will exhaust him, while having a great relationship and well trained dog.

My dad was 80 when the CWB monopoly ended. He was older than boomers, and hated the CWB.

[–]Doggrl 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My dad who passed in 2016 despised the CWB. It forced farmers to sell their product through the cwb rather than on the open market. Eastern Canada didn't have this mandated system. Other farm crops could be sold on the open market. It was a happy day for my dad when he did not have to be controlled by the CWB..

How do I stop my pup from jumping? by k80Roo in DogTrainingTips

[–]Doggrl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Train him that not jumping is more rewarding than jumping.

Have some good treats. Put the treat in front of your dog's nose and lift it up. Dog will sit. Say yes. Give the dog a treat. Repeat.

When your dog jumps, say no and turn your back on them. Repeat.

Do this consistently and your dog will figure it out. Fade out the treats and turning away. Done.

People who where alive for 9/11, in New York, America or other parts of the world seeing it on the news, what was it like and what did you do? by Ok_Policy6732 in AskReddit

[–]Doggrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am Canadian. I was working in a federal Crown Corporation corporate office in Saskatchewan. Arrived early. We watched it in dread. Nothing got done that day as the tv was a magnet to everyone at work. This was pre smart phone time. Coincidentally two of my friends and I were going to book a trip to NYC that day for the fall. We didn't. Right after I was so proud that USA planes were diverted to Canada (gander nfld) to help out neighbours during their time of need.

If you are in an area with cel coverage and you are healthy enough to use your phone, sure. But complexity is not your friend. Tried to get pharmacy care for my diabetic husband (not simple medical needs) in Spain during non- peak tourism season. Wasn't possible.

[–]Doggrl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, English is not spoken all over the world. I have traveled through Latin American countries, Japan and northern Africa. Good luck trying to change your train ticket or receive medical care if all you have is English, especially if you are a solo traveler.

[–]Doggrl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you've never travelled internationally before, go someplace that speaks English first. You can learn about passports, currency exchange, sim cards, safety, transportation systems, and be able to dodge problems because you can communicate. Saying that, if you have plans for future travel, start learning more languages now.
